MADRID : Real Madrid will begin their LaLiga campaign with a home game against Osasuna as scheduled after Spain's federation (RFEF) rejected their appeal to postpone the Aug 19 fixture on Thursday, local media reported.
Real had requested a longer rest period and pre-season after playing in the Club World Cup in the US, where they lost to Paris St-Germain in the semi-finals on July 9, according to the report.
Reuters has contacted the RFEF and Real for comment.
An RFEF judge ruled that in order to preserve the integrity of the competition, only a case of force majeure would warrant a change to the official calendar and that Real's case did not justify an alteration, Europa Press news agency reported.
'Finally, it should be added that although the requesting club claims to have the agreement of the opposing party, CA Osasuna, there is no record of this entity having responded to the request made by this judge,' the sole judge was quoted as saying in his ruling by Europa Press.

Barcelona thrash Como 5-0 as Ter Stegen mends ties ahead of La Liga

REIGNING Spanish champions Barcelona wrapped up their pre-season with a commanding 5-0 victory over Italian side Como on Sunday. The match also marked a reconciliation between the club and goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen after recent tensions. Marcus Rashford made his debut as a substitute following his loan move from Manchester United two weeks ago. Fermín Lopez and Lamine Yamal each scored twice, while Raphinha added another in the first half to seal the win. The game was held at the Johan Cruyff Stadium due to ongoing delays in the Camp Nou renovation. Barcelona displayed fluid attacking play under Hansi Flick ahead of their La Liga opener against Mallorca this weekend. Before kickoff, Ter Stegen addressed fans in a captain's speech, days after his public dispute over injury management. 'I think it was important to resolve the issue between the club and me, and now it's time to look forward,' said Ter Stegen. The German goalkeeper had his captaincy reinstated just two days before the match. 'We're going to fight again for all the trophies and we hope that with your help we can win all the titles possible,' he added. Rashford had an eventful cameo, assisting Raphinha's goal but also missing a simple tap-in opportunity. Barcelona now shift focus to defending their La Liga title, starting with their away fixture against Mallorca. - AFP

Soccer-Isco's injury jinx strikes again as Real Betis midfielder fractures leg

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Conference League - Final - Real Betis v Chelsea - Wroclaw Stadium, Wroclaw, Poland - May 28, 2025 Real Betis' Isco looks dejected after the match REUTERS/Dylan Martinez/File Photo (Reuters) -Real Betis midfielder Isco faces another lengthy spell on the sidelines after fracturing his leg in a pre-season friendly against Malaga, dealing a cruel blow to the Spanish club who qualified for the Europa League. The 33-year-old was caught near the ankle and forced to limp off the pitch during Saturday's match, with medical tests confirming a broken fibula. Isco had suffered a broken leg in May last year which needed two surgeries to fix. "Following medical tests, he has a new, non-displaced fracture in the middle third of his left fibula. This is a new traumatic injury unrelated to the previous injury, which has been resolved," Real Betis said in a statement on Sunday. "The player will undergo conservative treatment in the coming weeks, and his return will depend on the progress of the injury." Despite missing several games, he was instrumental last season with 12 goals and 11 assists in all competitions as Betis finished sixth in LaLiga and reached the final of the Conference League, which they lost to Chelsea. Isco was named player of the season in the Conference League and earned a return to the Spain squad after a six-year absence when he was called up for the Nations League. Florian Wirtz crowned Germany's Player of the Year after record-breaking Liverpool move

BERLIN, Aug 10 — Liverpool's club-record signing Florian Wirtz has been named Germany's player of the year, further cementing the attacking midfielder's status as a rising star. Wirtz, whose £100 million (RM570 million) transfer fee with add-ons could rise to £116 millon in what would be a British record, secured 191 votes among German sports journalists, putting him comfortably ahead of runner-up Michael Olise of Bayern Munich, who garnered 81 votes. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder arrived at Anfield from Bayer Leverkusen in June, part of a spending spree that has seen players including French forward Hugo Ekitike and Hungarian leftback Milos Kerkez join the squad as Liverpool bid to retain the Premier League title. Wirtz has been hailed as one of the 'top players in the world. He is world class,' by former Leverkusen coach and ex-Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, who is the new boss of Real Madrid. After joining, Wirtz told Liverpool's website that he 'would like to win everything every year!' 'In the end, we want to be successful,' he said. 'Last season they won the Premier League so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I'm really ambitious,' he added. Wirtz played a key role in Leverkusen's greatest season as they claimed a first-ever Bundesliga title and the German Cup in 2023/24 without losing a single game domestically under Alonso. Their only defeat that season, during which Wirtz was crowned Bundesliga player of the year, came in the Europa League final to Italian side Atalanta, denying Leverkusen a memorable treble. A return of 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 games for Leverkusen is evidence that he carries a threat both as a creator and a goalscorer. Liverpool are already blessed with an abundance of forward options — including Mohammed Salah — but the club are banking on Wirtz's creativity to help maintain the 33-year-old's prolific goalscoring and ease the burden of carrying the Liverpool attack. — AFP
