Actress Nadia Montenegro Quits Senator Padilla Office After Marijuana Use Claims

UAE Moments2 days ago
Actress Nadia Montenegro has resigned as political affairs officer in the office of Senator Robin Padilla following allegations linking her to marijuana use inside the Senate building.
Resignation Confirmed
Padilla's chief of staff, Atty. Rudolf Philip Jurado, confirmed that Montenegro's resignation letter, dated August 15, was accepted immediately. She said the move was for her mental health and her children's welfare.
Denial of Marijuana Allegations
Montenegro firmly denied being the Senate staff allegedly caught using marijuana. She clarified that she had used a PWD restroom on August 12, not the ladies' restroom where the odor was reported. To prove her point, she even showed her grape-flavored vape to Senate security.
Family Under Fire
The actress said the leaked incident report, which was supposed to remain internal, triggered online backlash. She added that her children were unfairly ridiculed and labeled as children of a 'drug addict,' which caused them emotional pain.

Trump calls on Fed Governor Cook to resign

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday called on Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook to resign, intensifying his effort to gain influence over the central bank on the basis of allegations made by one of his allies about mortgages Cook holds in Michigan and Georgia. U.S. Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte alleged in a post on X earlier on Wednesday that Cook had designated a condo in Atlanta as her primary residence after taking a loan on her home in Michigan, which she also declared as a primary residence. Loans for a primary residence can carry easier terms than for second homes or investment properties. Pulte said the loans date to mid-2021, before Cook was appointed to the Fed by former President Joe Biden and confirmed by the Senate the following year. She is a native of Georgia and at the time was an economics professor at Michigan State University. Pulte asked Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate, and Trump quickly amplified the allegation. The Justice Department was taking the matter very seriously, a department official told Reuters. Spokespersons for the Fed and for Cook did not immediately respond to a request for comment. "Cook must resign, now!!!" Trump wrote in a post on his social media platform, his latest remarks aimed at reshaping the make-up of the U.S. central bank, a body designed to set benchmark interest rates independent of White House influence. Cook is one of three Biden appointees to the Fed whose terms extend beyond Trump's time in office, complicating the president's efforts to get more control by appointing a majority of its seven-member board. Currently two of the Fed's remaining six board members were appointed by Trump, Governor Christopher Waller and Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman. Trump has repeatedly blasted Fed Chair Jerome Powell over benchmark rates that he wants sharply reduced, calling for his resignation while acknowledging that the Fed's unique status in U.S. governance prevents him from firing Fed board members over monetary policy disputes. Trump can name a new chair when Powell's term ends in May, but claiming a majority on the board may take more time. Powell could continue serving as a governor until 2028, near the end of Trump's term, should he buck convention and continue sitting on the board under a new chair. Until Powell's departure, Trump at this point has only one other seat to fill, vacated recently by the surprise resignation of former Governor Adriana Kugler. Earlier this month Trump nominated Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Stephen Miran to serve out the rest of her term. South Africa: Minister Dion George welcomes arrest of international rhino horn syndicate

After a seven-year investigation, the Wildlife Trafficking Section of the Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit has dismantled a major transnational rhino horn trafficking network. The syndicate is linked to a fraudulent scheme involving 964 rhino horns, worth millions of rands, destined for illegal markets in Southeast Asia. Six suspects, between the ages of 49 and 84, face charges of fraud, theft, and contravention of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (NEMBA) of 2004, with additional charges of racketeering and money laundering under consideration. The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, has hailed the arrests as a decisive victory in South Africa's fight against international wildlife crime. 'This complex investigation, which was also supported by the Enforcement unit of the Department (the Green Scorpions) and the National Prosecuting Authority, is a powerful demonstration of South Africa's resolve to protect its natural heritage,' said Minister George. 'The Hawks' work shows that our enforcement agencies will not hesitate to pursue those who plunder our wildlife for criminal profit. The illegal trade in rhino horn not only destroys biodiversity but also undermines the rule of law and the foundations of environmental governance.' Investigations reveal that the suspects allegedly defrauded the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment by securing permits under false pretences to buy and sell rhino horns domestically, while funnelling them into illegal international markets. Under South African law, domestic trade is permitted with valid DFFE-issued permits in terms of NEMBA. International commercial trade in rhino horn is banned under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The six suspects, five men and one woman, surrendered to the Hawks at Sunnyside Police Station and appeared before the Pretoria Magistrates' Court on 19 August 2025. Dr George added: 'Let there be no doubt: South Africa will bring the full force of its laws against those who plunder our wildlife. This arrest proves that syndicates cannot escape justice, no matter how complex their schemes.' Watch: Oman foils attempt to smuggle 12kg of marijuana through Muscat airport

An attempt to smuggle 12kg of marijuana into Oman has been foiled by customs officers at Muscat International Airport. A video posted to X appears to show the traveller putting her bags through the airport's security X-ray before a customs officer cuts them open to reveal the drugs. "Muscat International Airport Customs has foiled a Chinese traveller's attempt to smuggle 12.660kg of marijuana, which was tightly hidden inside her personal bag," the post said. It follows an operation carried out by the country's General Directorate for Combating Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, revealed on Monday. Two people of Asian nationality were arrested in Matrah for possession of more than 60kg of crystal meth and hashish with intent to traffick, and legal procedures are being completed against them, Omani Police said.
