Punjab women's panel takes notice after Kashmiri student alleges harassment
The female Kashmiri student in Kharar stated that some locals abused and harassed her and her friend on Wednesday following the attack that killed 26 people, mostly tourists, in J&K's Pahalgam town.
Commission's chairperson Raj Gill wrote to Mohali SSP Deepak Pareek on Friday to inquire about the incident and submit a report.
'Strict warning has been issued in general to who so ever try to harass the students, will face legal action. I am personally in touch with all the students from Kashmir and reassured them of their safety and safe place for their study,' Gill said in a post on X.
Meanwhile, Punjab Deputy Inspector General of Police Harcharan Singh Bhullar visited various educational institutions in Mohali and held meetings with their faculties and management regarding the safety of outstation students.
Bhullar also asked the students to beware of the false propaganda spreading on social media.
Additionally, Pareek assured students that PCR vehicles have been deployed in and around the campus where non-local students are staying in hostels, he said.
He added that areas with private PG and hostels are also being patrolled.
Besides, WhatsApp groups have also been formed so that students can report any incident in addition to the 112 helpline, which is operational round-the-clock.
Meanwhile, National Students Union of India (Punjab) president Isherpreet Singh condemned the harassment of the Kashmiri student and sought the registration of an FIR in the matter.

Delhi: Man who killed his parents, brother held while attempting suicide
Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 21 (PTI) A 22-year-old man, who killed his parents and elder brother in their house in south Delhi's Maidangarhi area, has been apprehended while he was trying to take his life at the AIIMS Delhi Metro Station, the police said on Thursday. The accused, identified as Siddharth, is suspected to be struggling with mental health issues, the police said, adding that they have recovered documents and medications indicating that he has been receiving psychiatric treatment for the past 12 years at various mental health institutions. 'He was arrested at the AIIMS Delhi Metro Station on Thursday evening while attempting to jump off the platform. Police and security guards noticed him and rushed to save him. When asked why he wanted to take the extreme step, he confessed to killing his father, mother, and brother," a senior police officer said. The deceased were identified as Prem Singh (around 45-50), his wife Rajani (40-45), and their elder son Ritik (24), the police mentioned. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan said the police received a PCR call about the incident around noon. A team from the Maidangarhi Police Station rushed to the scene and, upon entering the premises, found Prem and Ritik lying in a pool of blood on the ground floor. Rajani's body was discovered on the first floor. 'The crime and forensic teams were called in for inspection. The scene was preserved, evidence collected, and photographs of the bodies taken before further medico-legal formalities," the DCP said. According to a preliminary probe, Siddharth, the younger son of the family, was reported missing earlier. Further inquiries revealed that he allegedly confided in someone that he had killed all three of his family members, stating that he 'would not stay here anymore." During a search of the house, treatment documents and medications belonging to Siddharth were found. The police indicated that the records showed he had been receiving treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and 'aggressive behaviour" for over a decade. 'His history of psychiatric treatment suggests long-standing behavioural issues," a senior officer said. Investigations also indicated that Siddharth had strained relationships with his family due to his condition, the officer added. The officer further noted that the house has been secured and the bodies sent for post-mortem. Subsequently, a case of murder has been registered. Meanwhile, neighbours expressed shock over the triple murder. 'The family often had conflicts due to the father's alcoholism," claimed Mohammad Shakeel Khan, a lawyer. 'Whether Siddharth is involved in the murders or not can only be determined after a thorough police investigation," Khan further noted. Mukesh Tiwari, another neighbour, described the family as 'quiet and decent." 'They seemed like decent people, at least to my knowledge. It was a family matter, and we weren't very close. I learned about it around 2.30 pm," he said. Tiwari mentioned that Siddharth had run away from home a few times but always returned eventually. 'The rest of the family had jobs; they were decent, working people and were never involved in any conflicts," he added. Women who accompanied Kerala nuns in Chhattisgarh allege harassment by Bajrang Dal, railway cops
RAIPUR: Three women from Bastar's Narayanpur district have lodged a complaint with the Chhattisgarh State Women's Commission, alleging physical and mental harassment by Bajrang Dal cadres and Government Railway Police (GRP) at Durg station on July 25, in connection with an alleged human trafficking and forced religious conversion case. Kamleshwari Pradhan, Lalita Usendi and Sukmati Mandavi submitted their grievances to the commission in Raipur, seeking justice. On 2 August, a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Bilaspur granted bail to two Catholic nuns from Kerala, who had been arrested on charges of human trafficking and religious conversion. 'The women in their complaint against Jyoti Sharma, Ravi Nigam, Ratan Yadav and the GRP Durg incharge alleged they were physically ill-treated, verbally abused and threatened with gang rape in the presence of police personnel,' said Kiranmayee Nayak, Chairperson of the Commission. During the hearing, the accused named in the complaint did not appear before the Commission. 'The complainants have arrived but the respondents have refused to attend. So, according to our laid down procedures, we will inform them through the concerned police station asking them to be present during the next hearing,' Nayak said. She added that the GRP Durg incharge will also be summoned to attend the proceedings. Commission members conducted preliminary questioning of the three girls, who said they expected a fair and impartial hearing. The Chairperson has also sought detailed information on the 25 July incident, including CCTV footage, from the Durg district police chief. The women had earlier filed a complaint with the Narayanpur superintendent of police against Bajrang Dal activists. They stated that they were willingly travelling with the nuns to Agra to take up work in a hospital, and that they had converted to Christianity around six years ago. 'The Bajrang Dal cadres forcibly stopped the girls at Durg station and assaulted them with abusive remarks. All three were very scared and remain in shock after the incident,' relatives of the women claimed, demanding an FIR against Jyoti Sharma and other Bajrang Dal members 'so that such alleged incidents should not happen again.'
