Chanel takes a cruise around Lake Como with glamour fit for a grand hotel
Chanel has a fresh-faced, avant garde new designer but it still stands for classic glamour. This was the loud and clear messaging at the first Chanel show since Matthieu Blazy took up his role. The show was held at Villa d'Este, the Lake Como palace hotel where Elizabeth Taylor, Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich holidayed and which Alfred Hitchcock, who filmed The Pleasure Garden there, pronounced the most beautiful place on earth.
The location, booked a year in advance, provided the theme: life in a grand hotel. Think White Lotus on Lake Como, art directed by Slim Aarons. First on to the pebbled catwalk weaving through the hotel's terrace was a white bathrobe-style coat. Then there were capri pants in the butter yellow of the hotel parasols, and a lilac tweed suit to match the wisteria trailing overhead. Models swung tote bags big enough for pool towels, while gold lame cover-ups glinted as dazzling as sun on the lake.
'To me, Como is about the light,' said Bruno Pavlovsky, Chanel's president of fashion. 'Life is cinematic here.' Famous faces including actors Keira Knightley and Sarah Catherine Hook were dotted among a 900-strong audience mostly made up of Chanel's biggest spending clients.
The Cruise season of catwalk shows, named for a time when Caribbean cruises requiring trunks of glitzy loungewear were in vogue among the rich, have evolved to stand for holiday glamour in general. Spending on holiday wardrobes has increased exponentially across all price brackets: consumers spend less on dressing smartly for work, and more on looking good on holiday for Instagram. Brands drop serious money on Cruise shows, because a slice of this lucrative holiday market is worth a lot in sunglasses. (There was a pair of shades to go with most looks in this show.)
Pavlovsky describes Chanel as being in a moment of 'generational handover'. Blazy, who took up his role at the beginning of April, did not work on this collection or attend the show, which was credited to the design studio. Holding the fort as figurehead for the event in his absence was Chanel ambassador Sofia Coppola, who made a short film on location at Villa d'Este to accompany the event, which she described as 'about that version of yourself when you get away, when you may be different from how you are in real life'.
Chanel has doubled revenue and headcount in the past decade to become the world's second-largest luxury brand behind Louis Vuitton, with 36,500 employees at the end of 2023. It is more than 10 times the size of Bottega Veneta, from where Blazy arrives from. His October debut is hotly awaited but Pavlovsky is 'not so interested in what happens in October'. Rather, he is 'interested in a future which begins in October. We work on Chanel time. We don't rush.' Pavlovsky has said he will wait two years before judging whether Blazy is the right fit.
Pavlovsky dismissed any suggestion of moving production to the US as a strategy to avoid tariffs. He said Chanel intends to maintain its current policy of price harmonisation, in which prices are consistent in every country in the world, adding that they would 'find a way to cover the cost' of keeping prices low in US boutiques if tariffs are levied.

Pavlovsky told Womenswear Daily that it was 'the great admiration and respect for the heritage and the work done by Mademoiselle Chanel, by Karl and by Virginie,' which he sensed in Blazy, which clinched the recruitment. 'That was important to me, because it wasn't about a kind of competition over image and size. It was about the depth of what the brand stands for, and how we could build on that to continue telling our story,' he noted. Blazy has begun to make changes, including the hiring of seasoned British haute couture specialist Andrew Heather, who has worked under designers including Alexander McQueen and John Galliano.
Silk scarves made in Como featured as ankle straps for heeled sandals, on the catwalk. Chanel has recently taken a 35% stake in Como-based manufacturer Mantero, which has been producing silk for Chanel blouses and printed scarves for more than 50 years. Under the terms of the deal, Mantero will continue to produce clothes for rival luxury clients including Dior, Saint Laurent and Versace, but Chanel believes that protecting key players in its supply chain is a sound investment, at a time when global economic pressures are putting many specialist producers out of business.

The Love Island star, 28, tied the knot with West Ham ace Jarrod, 28, over the weekend in a lavish ceremony at the five-star Langley Hotel in Buckinghamshire. It has been reported that the couple, who began dating in 2021, kept things low-key with only their closest friends and family attending the nuptials. Taking to Instagram after saying 'I do', Dani gave her followers an insight into the big day in a video created by Evieradfordsocials. It begins with the Survival Of The Fittest star getting glammed up, slipping into her stunning off-shoulder white gown, which reportedly cost £10,000. We are then treated to the moment Danny first saw his daughter in her dress, planting a kiss on her cheek. The EastEnders star walks his eldest daughter down the aisle, before sitting down, beaming from ear to ear, to watch the couple tie the knot. It's clear the day was filled with love, with beautiful clips of guests laughing, congratulating the newlyweds, and Dani and Jarrod sharing an intimate moment with their two-year-old twins, Summer and Star, and Dani's son Santiago, four, on the dancefloor. We don't get to hear any of Danny's speech, but we can see one raucous moment where the entire room is spinning napkins above their heads for reasons unknown. The video also sees Dani and Danny hit the dancefloor for a traditional father-daughter dance, which sees Danny wrap his arms around Dani's shoulders and plant a kiss on her head. It ends with Dani slipping out of her flowing gown and into a shorter white lace number for the reception, filled with dancing, champagne, and pizza for attendees to tuck into. She wrote in the caption: 'The best day of my entire life and a day that I will want to re live forever🤍.' Fans have taken to the comment section to share their congratulations with the happy couple, with fellow Love Island star Georgia Steel calling it 'the most magical day.' 'So beautiful! Danny shared a simple row of heart emoji on the post, with fans quickly flocking to ask him to share his speech while saying how 'proud' he looked. Skyesteadmanx added: 'That brought a tear to my eye , how beautiful.' Many said how 'stunning' the bride was, while attendees gushed how 'perfect' the day was. Victoria_plumx joked: 'Absolutely stunning. In the words of your dad from my fav movie ' NICE 1 BROVAA' 😂 xx,' quoting a line from Human Traffic in which Danny starred as Moff. More Trending 'It all looks absolutely beautiful and a lovely colour scheme . Love it when your Dad and the bridesmaids all finally see your stunning wedding dress ! Wishing you both lots of love and happiness !' Helspels66 commented. Ahead of the big day, Dani opened up to Heat magazine about wedding planning being the 'most stressful experience ever.' 'I have finally done my table plans now. Until you are in there writing names out, making sure you have tables of 10, it's the most stressful experience ever – that's the only thing I've not enjoyed,' she said. She also revealed she would take on a double-barrel surname, continuing: 'I am going to keep the Dyer – I am going to do Dani Dyer-Bowen just because of my work. I feel like if I am Dani Bowen, it takes that thing away from me. We are double-barrelling it.' Got a story? Shop the fleece gilet that Clarkson's Farm star Harriet Cowan owns in 2 colours
Harriet Cowan has become the standout star of season five of Clarkson's Farm, and her uniform fleece gilet is already being coveted by fans – so we tracked it down When on the lookout for fashion inspiration, you probably wouldn't think to head straight to Diddly Squat Farm, the location of Jeremy Clarkson 's Amazon Prime hit series Clarkson's Farm. However the arrival of new team member Harriet Cowan is about to change all that, as fans have already labelled her a fan favourite, not to mention been searching her social media for where to buy some of her outfits. And whilst Harriet's outfits are all done with practical farm life in mind, it seems this summer everyone's hoping to copy some of her country chic looks. One piece that's been a stand out is her fleece gilet, which has appeared in several scenes on the show, not to mention been spotted in multiple social media posts of hers posted prior to the show airing. In fact, Harriet loves the gilet so much she owns it in at least two colours. Whilst she's not mentioned the brand on her TikTok and Instagram posts, an eagle eyed look at her previous posts indicated it's most likely to be Schoffel's Lyndon Fleece Gilet. Although plenty of other outdoor brands have created their own versions, Schoffel's is considered the original blueprint for the look. It's also been worn by fellow Clarkson's Farm stars Charlie Ireland and Kaleb Cooper, although they would have presumably opted for the men's Oakham version. Harriet appears to have both the navy and the forest green colours, and a close look at some of her TikTok videos shows the white writing detail on the front zip and Schoffel's signature brown trim. It also features an adjustable drawcord around the waist which lets you cinch it in for a little more shape. The technical fleece is soft, warm, breathable and hard wearing, making it perfect for being out in the British countryside, and is made from Italian-milled Pontetorto fleece. It's currently available in sizes 6 to 22 for £160, with 10 colours to choose from. Although there are TikTok videos of Harriet wearing the iconic fleece as far back as 2021, more recently, Harriet shared a new addition to her fleece gilet collection, posting that Beaumont and Bear had also gifted her a navy fleece with a similar design. There are also plenty of other options around, including Finisterre's Women's Hegen Wool Fleece Gilet which is £135 and comes in a light oatmeal colour. For bargain hunters, Craghoppers has slashed the price of its Women's Dinas Vest from £65 to £45.50. Meanwhile Regatta's currently has 50% off slashing it to £12.50. However for the true authentic countrywear look – and to follow in almost all of the Clarkson's Farm stars' footsteps, shop Schoffel's women's Lyndon Fleece Gilet and men's Oakham Fleece Gilet now.
