'Reckless' driver runs over teen in Marietta parking lot, police say
The Brief
The Marietta Police Department's STEP Unit is investigating an incident involving a "reckless" driver crashing into a pedestrian in Westside Plaza.
Jeremias Escalante Perez, 19, was struck and dragged by a silver Infinity G35 Friday night.
The driver fled the scene without providing aid, leaving Perez with life-threatening injuries; he was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital.
The investigation is ongoing, and the police are seeking information from the public.
MARIETTA, Ga. - Marietta police say a reckless driver doing burnouts in a parking lot hit a pedestrian late Friday night.
What we know
It happened in the Westside Plaza at the corner of Powder Springs Road and Sandtown Road at 11:30 p.m.
Police identified the victim as 19-year-old Jeremias Escalante Perez from Virginia. They say Perez was either walking or standing in the lot when a silver Infinity G35 crashed into him.
Perez was dragged by the car as the driver attempted to flee.
He was rushed to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
What we don't know
Police have not yet identified the driver. This is an active investigation.

USDOJ says 3 Mexican nationals face charges from Cobb County meth lab bust
Three 'illegal aliens from Mexico' face charges following a methamphetamine lab bust in Cobb County. One is still on the run. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Juan Perez-Maldonado, Francisco Garcia Gomez and Filemon Hernandez-Jijon were charged after a federal operation on June 3. Officials said Drug Enforcement Administration agents saw Hernandez-Jijon allegedly supply two kilograms of meth to a drug customer in Smyrna. Then, they watched as Hernandez-Jijon go back and forth from a Marietta mobile home. Agents also found two handguns, including one that was hidden in the tank of a toilet, as well as money remitter receipts with Garcia Gomez's and Hernandez-Jijon's names, according to the Justice Department. USDOJ said agents searched an apartment in Smyrna in connection to the investigation, finding a bag with a loaded Glock pistol, two loaded magazines for a firearm and identification for Perez-Maldonado inside of a baby's crib. Also in the apartment, agents found a Springfield XD firearm and mechanical press used to turn powder into kilogram bricks, according to USDOJ. As the investigation continued, agents found that Perez-Maldonado and Hernandez-Jijon had already been deported and removed from the United States earlier. While Perez-Maldonado and Garcia Gomez appeared in court on Wednesday for charges of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, officials said Hernandez-Jijon is currently a fugitive. Good Samaritan thwarts Georgia carjackings, holds suspect at gunpoint until police arrive
Police are investigating two attempted car jackings that happened Monday night in Marietta. Police say the first attempted carjacking happened at a gas station on Franklin Gateway SE. They say the second attempted carjacking happened at a nearby intersection. Officers said they arrived to 66-year-old Gary Edwards holding 32-year-old Rico Riley at gunpoint. 'We had what potentially could have been a tragic situation. We had an individual lurking next to a vehicle at a gas station the driver had gone inside the business,' said Chuck McPhilamy, Marietta Police Department Public Information Officer. 'He was waiting for her to exit as she attempted to get back into her car the fight began. Roughly a minute that they were in a severe struggle trying to get control of the keys and that vehicle. 'At one point she is in the vehicle he pulls her out then she gets in the vehicle he pulls her out this is a struggle.' >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< Police said the struggle between the victim and suspect probably went on for roughly one minute. 'We walked out of the restaurant. Heard a lady screaming across the street. We could see a car next to the gas station with its door open with this guy the suspect on top of the lady she was still screaming,' Edwards said. Edwards can be seen in a picture taken from security camera video, running to the gas station to jump in and help the victim. 'Knocked the suspect down and he got up at that point a little scuffle with me and then he started running,' he said. 'That suspect now leaves and runs out into traffic and attempts a second carjacking. that same good Samaritan runs out into traffic,' McPhilamy said. Police said a mother and her toddler were inside their car at an intersection when Riley tried to steal it. Edwards said his wife was nearby as he went after the suspect. 'I realized he's unarmed; I had no idea what he's walking into,' Anna Edwards said. 'We both have conceal carry permits and I had my gun in my purse. He had his in our other vehicle which we hadn't driven. I followed him across the road and pulled out my gun to give him something to defend himself should he need it. 'I got her gun at that point i took it into my own hands and made him get out of that vehicle and get on the ground,' Gary Edwards said. Certainly we applaud his efforts and are very grateful for the outcome we want to caution the public if you're not wired that way this may not have been the safest outcome for you,' McPhilamy said. Guatemalan man sentenced to prison for illegal reentry, found living in Pennsylvania
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WTAJ) — A Guatemalan National was sentenced to prison after he was found living in Pennsylvania, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced. Elvis Alfonso Lopez-Perez, 32, was found living in Carlisle despite having been previously deported. United States District Judge Keli M. Neary sentenced him to eight months in prison for his illegal reentry into the country. According to Acting U.S. Attorney John C. Gurganus, Lopez-Perez was removed from the country on Feb. 1, 2013. He then illegally reentered at an unknown time and was found on May 28, 2024, without permission to legally case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.
