
Local medtech company pumps up expansion plans with new name and new jobs
Heart Rhythm Ireland, which will rebrand as Heart Rhythm International (HRI), plans to grow its presence in the UK healthcare market by partnering with more than 30 hospitals and adding approximately 50,000 patients to its network by 2029. The company also has its sights set on expansion in the the US, Australia and New Zealand. The company also plans to grow its team to 30 staff members in the coming years.
Founded over 15 years ago, HRI operates a cloud-based cardiac rhythm management platform that supports and provides real-time access to cardiac device data for patients, clinicians, hospitals, and device manufacturers, delivering accurate, accessible and actionable data to patients and their medical teams. This improves patient outcomes by making device data more accessible, enabling timely clinical decisions and more coordinated care.
HRI's system also provides patients with secure access to their information anytime and anywhere, making it easier to share critical data with healthcare providers in emergencies. The company is also developing artificial intelligence and predictive analytics features to enable more personalised and earlier interventions in cardiac care.
The platform currently supports over 65,000 patients and is deployed in more than 50 cardiac hospitals across Ireland. The company also provides national coverage, working with leading institutions such as the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Bon Secours Health System, Beaumont Hospital, Mater Private Network, University Hospital Galway, Blackrock Health, and Cork University Hospital. It already manages Ireland's national electronic health record for cardiac devices, maintaining a registry of over 100,000 implant procedures and nearly one million clinical follow-up records.
'Every 20 seconds someone receives a cardiac implant, but the systems supporting their care haven't kept pace,' said Robert Kelly, CEO of HRI. 'HRI was set up to change that, by operating at the centre of a unique ecosystem, supporting patients, hospitals and clinicians and cardiac device manufacturers. Through our system, patients receive greater peace of mind and better health outcomes, while medical personnel can make better informed and more efficient decisions. In addition to commercial growth, HRI is actively contributing to international research and innovation projects. These include Project CARAMEL, a €12 million initiative funded under the EU Horizon Europe programme, helping to develop AI-powered predictive models for cardiovascular risk in women aged 40 to 60. The company is also an industry partner in the new Health Frontiers Technology Innovation Centre (HF-TIC), led by Ulster University and supported by €9.1 million in PEACEPLUS funding. Both initiatives reinforce HRI's leadership in AI-driven digital health innovation on an international scale.
'We've already demonstrated how we can enhance cardiac care in Ireland by supporting over 65,000 patients and working with more than 50 hospitals nationwide. Now, we're bringing that capability overseas. A key strength of our system is that it was built on scalable, cloud-based infrastructure in partnership with IBM, allowing it to be rapidly deployed by healthcare providers anywhere in the world,' said Kelly.

HRI and LDA to develop Leopardstown campus, 800 new homes
The Land Development Agency (LDA) and Horse Racing Ireland (HRI) have reached an agreement on the transfer of land with the potential to deliver 800 homes at Leopardstown Racecourse in south Dublin Both parties have reached an agreement that will see HRI transfer ownership of c.17 acres of land to the LDA. The new development will be served by the activation of a new Luas station located on the site. The two state bodies will work collaboratively and in consultation with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council on a new masterplan for Leopardstown, which will deliver much-needed affordable housing and protect and further develop the leading racecourse and its extensive racing and non-racing facilities. The land transfer follows positive engagement between the LDA and HRI to ensure the best outcome for both parties. Design and planning work on the site-wide masterplan and proposed housing development will commence immediately. Subject to planning, the LDA land will be used to deliver new, A-rated homes, which will be located next to the existing, but currently unused Leopardstown Luas stop. The area surrounding Leopardstown Racecourse is well located next to the M50 and the Green Luas line. It also benefits from a range of services and amenities. Land at HRI's campus in Leopardstown was first identified as having the potential for housing in the Government's Housing for All plan. Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD commended the LDA and HRI for reaching the agreement. "The LDA has the resources it needs to deliver housing at scale and has proven that it can do so quickly to a very high standard. The LDA already has a strong pipeline of development land, but it's crucial that it is able to access more, especially State-owned land like this with the potential to deliver a high number of homes in a well located and well-serviced area," said Minister Brown. "This decision by HRI will have a lasting impact and it can be proud of the significant contribution it has made to help address the country's urgent housing need." The site that can accomodate 800 new homes pending planning approve is described by LDI CEO John Coleman as a development in an area of great housing need in Dublin. "This transfer of State-owned land to the LDA is a leading example of what can be achieved when state bodies are open to making the best use of land they own and work with the LDA to facilitate the delivery of much-need affordable homes while safeguarding their own existing and future needs," said Mr Coleman "The LDA is now under construction on 16 sites for over 5,000 homes across the country and we will be adding further new construction starts in the coming months," he said. Suzanne Eade, CEO of Horse Racing Ireland said: "For an industry that contributes in excess of €2.46bn to the Irish economy annually, the agreement safeguards our plans to further develop the Leopardstown Racecourse campus and to improve what is already a proven world-class horse racing facility, while fostering a sustainable mixed-use neighbourhood benefiting the greater Dublin area.

Inadequate housing supply 'costly' to Ireland's economy, Dáil committee to hear
Ireland's economy faces unprecedented risks in the coming years, with the current geopolitical situation leading to uncertainty 'twice as high' as it was during the early days of covid-19, according to the Central Bank of Ireland. The banking regulator will, together with the Economic and Social Research Institute, address the Oireachtas housing committee on Tuesday regarding the challenges facing the Irish housing market. Robert Kelly, the Central Bank's director of economics and statistics, is to tell the committee that Ireland's significant ties with the US via trade and investment places the country at significant risk of heightened impact due to the tariff and isolationist policies of President Donald Trump. 'In the short term, the main challenge is heightened uncertainty, now estimated to be nearly twice as high as it was during the early pandemic, which risks reducing consumer spending and delaying investment decisions,' Mr Kelly will say. Regarding the immediate future of housing in Ireland, Mr Kelly will strike a downbeat note, reiterating that housing completions here across 2025 are projected to be 35,000 at a maximum, itself a more optimistic outlook than that of most developers. He will note commencements in 2024 'surged', but this may have been a result of the temporary waiver of levies on development and water connections. The ongoing stasis seen within Ireland's housing market is a 'costly' one, Mr Kelly will tell the committee, noting 'inadequate housing supply will lead to rising rents and house prices', a fact which will only serve to further undermine 'our competitiveness as a small open economy'. Both Mr Kelly and the ESRI's associate research professor Dr Conor O'Toole are set to outline similar opinions on the primary blockages to increasing housing supply — with the planning system, low productivity in the construction sector, and infrastructural deficits all cited as being factors which are holding the country back. Mr Kelly will describe the fragmented nature of Ireland's construction sector — which sees 175,000 workers employed predominantly in small firms — as hindering 'scalability and efficiency', to the extent output per hour in Ireland is '25% below the euro area average'. Dr O'Toole is expected to reiterate the same point, that in Ireland there is 'lower productivity for small and domestic-owned construction firms relative to foreign-owned construction firms', an issue which is 'likely to be inhibiting activity in the sector'. Central Bank director Mr Kelly will estimate an additional €7bn in investment will be required each year in order for the country to scale up to the 54,000 dwellings required each year to match the growing Irish population's demand for housing. Of the three factors the Central Bank believes need to be maximised in order to deal with the crisis — 'prepared land, efficient planning, and productive building' — Mr Kelly will emphasise the shortage of zoned land, particularly in Dublin and the other urban centres, is 'a critical bottleneck to housing delivery'. He will criticise the domination of short-term thinking with regard to overhauling Ireland's dated water, transport and energy infrastructure. 'Without these, development cannot proceed,' Mr Kelly will say. 'Our analysis shows that delays in infrastructure planning or execution lead to long wait times, causing a permanent reduction in private sector participation and resulting in poor value for money.' Dr O'Toole will note, meanwhile, the challenges in the housing market are 'complicated' and 'interlinked', and structural reforms on the supply side in planning, zoning and regulation 'are likely to yield the best return in terms of fostering the long-term production of housing'.
