Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine has advanced to the quarterfinals of the women's National Bank Open in Montreal with a three-set victory over McCartney Kessler of the United States.
The 23-year-old Kostyuk recovered from a first-set loss to defeat Kessler 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 in the fourth round at IGA Stadium.
Kostyuk, the 24th seed, will meet the winner of a match between her countrywoman Dayana Yastremska and ninth seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan.
But the buzz in Montreal was for a later feature match between Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko and top seed Coco Gauff of the United States.
The 18-year-old Mboko from Toronto is the lone Canadian singles player still competing in the event. The match will be played on centre court.
Mboko is 85th in the WTA's rankings while Gauff is No. 2.

Article content In Week 9 of the CFL season, the Roughriders improved to 7-1 on the year with a convincing 34-6 win over the Montreal Alouettes, who dropped to 5-3. Article content Article content Roughriders quarterback Trevor Harris completed 19 of 27 passes for 289 yards with two touchdown passes. Dohnte Meyers led all receivers with five catches for 136 yards while Tommy Nield and KeeSean Johnson caught touchdown passes. Running back A.J. Ouellette had 74 yards on 15 carries. Article content Article content Saskatchewan's defence made life tough for Alouettes quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson as he was intercepted by linebacker Jameer Thurman while also being sacked twice by defensive linemen Shane Ray and Mike Rose. Bethel-Thompson finished the night having completed 15 of 26 passes for 126 yards. Saskatchewan's defence also allowed just 59 rushing yards. Article content After a 46-yard kick return by Meyers, the Roughriders put together a seven-minute drive, going 54 yards on 10 plays, with short-yardage quarterback Tommy Stevens plunging into the end zone from one yard out to make it 7-0. Article content In the second quarter, the Roughriders made it 14-0 as Harris engineered a nine play, 69-yard drive capped off with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Nield, who was making his first start of the season in place of the injured Samuel Emilus. The Alouettes got on the board with five minutes left in the half as kicker Jose Maltos nailed a 56-yard field goal to make it 14-3. The Roughriders offence had 212 net yards and 13 first downs while leading time of possession 20:14 to 9:46 Article content After a 25-minute lightning delay during halftime, the Alouettes cut into the lead by three points early in the third quarter as Maltos made a 54-yard field goal to make it 18-6. Article content On the ensuing drive, Saskatchewan's offence picked up where it left off as Harris hit Meyers for a 32-yard gain, which put the second-year receiver over 100 yards on the night, before Lauther hit a 32-yard field goal to make it 21-6.

Ethan Katzberg easily wins hammer throw title at Canadian championship

Ethan Katzberg, the reigning Olympic and world champion in men's hammer throw, added another title to his impressive resume with a first-place finish at the Canadian track and field championship in Ottawa on Saturday. Katzberg, of Nanaimo, B.C., won gold in Paris at the 2024 Summer Olympics and in Budapest at the 2023 World Championships. He threw for 81.33 metres in Ottawa to easily beat runner-up Jeremiah Nubbe (71.78) of the Kamloops Track and Field Club, and third-place finisher Rowan Hamilton (71.25) of Chilliwack, B.C. Katzberg set the Canadian record of 84.38 metres on April 20, 2024, and set the national championship record of 82.60 metres on June 26, 2024. Marco Arop, who lives in Edmonton, is the reigning world champion in the 800 metres, but it took everything he had to beat Justin O'Toole of Montreal to the finish line on Saturday. Arop clocked 1:45.44 — just 0.7 seconds ahead of O'Toole. Matti Erickson of Nelson, B.C., was third in 1:45.97. Maeliss Trapeau of the Ottawa Lions track club won the women's 800-metre final in 2:01.79, just beating Jazz Shukla (2:01.95) of Toronto to the finish line. Jenica Swartz of the Edmonton Columbians track club was third in 2:02.46.
