Ben Shelton rallies to beat Karen Khachanov in Toronto final
The 22-year-old Shelton, seeded fourth in Masters 1000 hard-court event, had 16 aces in the final. He also won on hard courts in Tokyo in 2023 and on clay in Houston last year.
Shelton will move to a career-high sixth in the world. He outlasted Khachanov a night after topping second-seeded Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-3 in an all-American semifinal match.
The 29-year-old Khachanov has seven career victories — all on hard courts. In the semifinals, he survived a match point in another third-set tiebreaker against top-seeded Alexander Zverev.
Top-ranked Jannik Sinner — the 2023 winner in Toronto — and No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz skipped the expanded event as they prepare the U.S. Open.
Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool won the all-English doubles final, saving four match points in a 6-3, 6-7 (5), 13-11 victory over Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski. The second-seeded Wimbledon champions have won 19 straight matches.

That exit from the All England Club on July 7 — Dimitrov had taken the opening two sets against Sinner but got hurt in the third — marked the fifth consecutive Grand Slam tournament where the 34-year-old Dimitrov failed to complete a match. It also happened at the Australian Open in January and the French Open in May, plus last year's Wimbledon and U.S. Open. A year ago in New York, Dimitrov stopped while trailing 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 4-1 against Frances Tiafoe in the quarterfinals. Dimitrov was a semifinalist at the U.S. Open in 2019, at the Australian Open in 2017, and at Wimbledon in 2014. His highest ranking was No. 3; he is currently No. 21. With Dimitrov out of the field, Alejandro Tabilo gets a spot in the men's singles bracket, which starts play on Aug. 24. Brandon Holt is the next player who would move into the draw if another man withdraws. Deron Rippey reschedules visit with Kentucky Basketball
Kentucky basketball was set to host Deron Rippey Jr. for a visit earlier this month, but that trip was postponed to a later date. Now, the 5-star point guard has rescheduled his visit to Kentucky for October 3, according to Jacob Polacheck of KSR. It will be one of many visits Kentucky is set to host in the coming months. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound Rippey plays for Blair Academy in New Jersey and is ranked as high as eighth overall in the class of 2026 by Rivals. 247 Sports has him 17th, while ESPN has him 18th. Back in July, Rippey announced a list of 12 schools under consideration that included Kentucky, North Carolina, Alabama, Duke, Louisville, Tennessee, Kansas, Indiana, Texas, Miami, North Carolina State, and Syracuse.
