Giants place Matt Chapman on IL amid third baseman's struggles
Chapman initially was hurt when he landed awkwardly on his hand while diving back to first base in a game against the Astros on June 8, and he missed 23 games while recovering.
His offensive struggles are notable the past three weeks: He's 1-for-18 with runners in scoring position since July 22 and 3-for-35 in those situations since June 6. This is one reason the team's offense hasn't thrived: Since the start of the 2024 season, the Giants are 53-19 in games in which Chapman drives in at least one run.
The Giants have a natural fill-in at the ready because Casey Schmitt is a more than solid third baseman. With Schmitt at third, Christian Koss got another start at second base Friday.

Something is clearly wrong with the Giants. Is it Bob Melvin?
Chapman's IL placement freed up a roster spot for Friday starter Landen Roupp, just off the IL after missing three starts with elbow inflammation.
The Giants also added reliever Keaton Winn to the roster Friday. He'll fill in while Ryan Walker is on the paternity list; Walker and his wife, Alexis, were expecting their second child.

Chad Johnson Sounds Off on NY Giants Trade Idea
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Another strong performance by New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart has raised many valid questions late in August. The obvious question is whether the Giants will reconsider their stance on keeping Russell Wilson as the guaranteed starter for Big Blue in September. The other question is whether the Giants keep Jameis Winston on the roster or not. When discussing both scenarios, NFL Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe and the former superstar wide receiver Chad Johnson made it clear that they don't believe the status of Wilson should be questioned at this time. "They have their mind made up that they are going to allow him to develop and allow him to sit back," Johnson said. "Michael Vick, when he played, he sat back. I think that rookies not being thrown to the wolves—some are good at it." Shannon Sharpe wondered if keeping Winston in the picture was necessary if Jaxson Dart is playing well enough to be the guaranteed backup quarterback behind Wilson. For Chad Johnson, it shouldn't be a question. The Giants have a solid QB room, and they should keep it together. He's not going nowhere!" Johnson said regarding Winston. "They are going to keep three quarterbacks. Jaxson Dart will, obviously, be developing, and he would be the practice squad quarterback. I don't think they are throwing young boul out there to the Wolves like that as a rookie. Absolutely [you keep Jameis Winston]. Because the third guy that you're keeping is more valuable than just being on the field." The Giants have plenty of experience at the position beyond Dart. Russell Wilson has been starting in the NFL since 2012. Winston has been in the league since 2015 and started 87 of the 105 games he played. Since the Giants want to compete for a spot in the playoffs this year, they don't want to put massive pressure on the shoulders of the rookie if things go south for Wilson. That's not to say that Winston will be the backup, but the Giants could use the veteran's leadership and presence to help guide Dart through his rookie campaign if he does see the field. New York signed Winston to a two-year deal, not with the intention of flipping him. Unless a quarterback-needy team comes to the table with an offer too good to pass up, many believe that Winston will stay put with the Giants and will help Dart understand the game better from the side. 2025 NL West Odds: Can Padres Stop Dodgers' Streak?
Major League Baseball 2025 NL West Odds: Can Padres Stop Dodgers' Streak? Published Aug. 18, 2025 11:11 a.m. ET share facebook x reddit link The NL West champion has almost become a foregone conclusion. But this year, the Padres are in striking distance of flipping the script on the Dodgers. Here are the division odds at DraftKings Sportsbook as of Aug. 18, as well as what to know about the division. NL West winner Dodgers: -450 (bet $10 to win $12.22 total) Padres: +310 (bet $10 to win $41 total) Giants: +50000 (bet $10 to win $5,010 total) What to know: Since the NL West was created in 1969, the Dodgers have been the division leaders, winning a league-high 22 titles — including 11 in the past 12 seasons. They're followed by the Giants (nine), Padres (five) and Diamondbacks (five), while the Rockies are still chasing their first crown. The Dodgers are the reigning World Series champions, capturing their eighth title all-time in 2024. But just last week, it looked as if the Padres had the slight upper hand — leading the division by a game after L.A. was swept by the Angels. San Diego has not won the division since 2006, before it lost to the Cardinals in the NLDS. Then, the weekend happened. The Dodgers had been going through a somewhat rocky August, going 5-7 to start the month. But they essentially made those woes a thing of the past with a three-game sweep of San Diego over the weekend, reclaiming a two-game lead in the division in the process. Los Angeles is the most recent NL West team to turn a division crown into a World Series title, achieving the feat in 2024. Remaining matchups: The Dodgers and Padres will face off three more times this upcoming weekend to cap off their season series. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
