Maharaja's College, a living chapter in nation's history, says CM; launches one-year-long fete
KOCHI: Maharaja's College, Ernakulam is not just an institution, it's an emotion, said Industries Minister P Rajeeve, as Kerala's legendary campus launched its post-150th-year platinum jubilee celebrations on Tuesday.
At the heart of the celebrations was the inauguration of a grand new auditorium funded by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), a fitting tribute to the legacy and future of one of India's most iconic colleges.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who formally launched the year-long celebration, hailed the college as a bastion of Kerala's political, cultural, and intellectual development. 'Maharaja's is not just a college. It is a living chapter in the nation's history,' Pinarayi said.
'From leading the khadi movement to championing Hindi language propagation, the students and faculty here have always stood at the forefront of national and social transformation.'

Tamil Nadu CM Stalin alleges AIADMK has gone under BJP's control
Chief Minister M K Stalin on Sunday alleged the AIADMK has gone fully under the control of the BJP and leader of opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami is attempting to bring the entire state of Tamil Nadu under the Saffron party's it will not happen and "no (Amit) Shah can rule Tamil Nadu," Stalin, the DMK president said in his address to the party's general council meeting. Stalin said the people need to be told on what may happen if the BJP-alliance assumed power in the state. They would stoke religion and caste-based communal violence and divide people in all manner. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami wished a split in the DMK-led alliance and stories like snapping of ties between AIADMK and BJP were spun ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. However, the DMK-led alliance did not break up. As a result, Palaniswami has surrendered again to the BJP by visiting Amit Shah in March 2025 in Delhi. "When the AIADMK-BJP alliance was announced by Amit Shah, Palaniswami did not even utter a those who lead the alliance in the state usually announce the alliance. The headlines in newspapers by the same time next year (June, 2026) should say that the DMK formed the government for the seventh time. Tamil Nadu Assembly election is due by April-May 2026. Humility is the key leadership quality and he will never be arrogant, Stalin said, adding his faith in party workers gave him the confidence of a big win for the party in polls next year. Praising committed, resolute party workers, he said that only because of them the DMK, founded in 1949 is marching towards its centenary. "The sun is permanent. Similarly, the DMK is permanent," he said and appealed to party workers to work to make the party-led regime a permanent feature. "We can create it. You can do that. We can do that." Further, the CM said the DMK never had the "media comfort." Irrespective of whether the DMK is the ruling or opposition party, it faced increased criticism. "However, the wave of support for DMK is more that the wave of opposition. Some are trying to hide it; divert it." Despite several obstacles, which includes those through the office of the Governor and economic and political challenges posed by the BJP-led Union government, the DMK regime has elevated Tamil Nadu and it tops Indian states in terms of growth. The 2026 Assembly election is round the corner and the party has to gear up to overcome challenges from political rivals like defamatory content and lies under the guise of opinion polls. "If they try to set a narrative, we have to be one step ahead of them. Our truths should reach the people well before their lies." One of the reasons for the party's victory is its robust alliance, he said and batted for dialogue and mutual respect among electoral partners for continuation of the alliance's victory journey. Stalin underscored unity in party at all levels and appointment of youngsters in the two new party wings that were announced. The Dravidian party chief urged party functionaries to explain the government initiatives, schemes and welfare projects in their respective areas and make a comparison as regards the situation during the previous regime. Stalin emphasised on the new membership enrolment initiative and said he would himself monitor the exercise. Though the party is robust in terms of organisational prowess, strong leadership and a deep commitment to ideology, that alone will not be sufficient for electoral victory. "Booth level micro management is very important." Stalin said he would meet party functionaries constituency-wise from the first week of June and assured "one to one" conversations at that time. The party adopted resolutions including celebrating late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi's birth anniversary (June 3) as Classical language day. The party resolved to "drive away the AIADMK and BJP," and right away begin field work in order to retain power in the state following the 2026 Assembly polls.

‘Dont turn Bengal into North Korea': Kangana Ranaut slams TMC over influencer's arrest
Amid the escalating political row over the arrest of 22-year-old law student and influencer Sharmistha Panoli, actor-politician Kangana Ranaut has strongly criticised the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government. Urging Panoli's immediate release, Ranaut condemned her arrest as an act of political overreach. 'Harassing someone in the name of law and order is not good. When someone has apologised and deleted the post, but putting her in prison, torturing her, ending her career and raising questions on her character is very wrong,' Ranaut told reporters. In a pointed comparison, Ranaut said, 'I urge the West Bengal government not to try to make the state into North Korea. Everyone has democratic rights. She has apologised for her indecent remarks. She had said everything in general and today's generation uses such language very normally- both in English and in Hindi.' Ranaut also urged for her early release saying 'she is a very young woman' who has her whole career and life ahead of her. Panoli was arrested by Kolkata Police on Friday for a now-deleted social media video, in which she allegedly made communal remarks while criticising Bollywood celebrities' silence over 'Operation Sindoor'. The post triggered widespread backlash online, forcing Panoli to delete it and issue a public apology. NDA ally and Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan also condemned the influencer's arrest. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he questioned the selective outrage and accused the West Bengal government of hypocrisy. Kalyan wrote a post on X condemning her arrest saying, 'secularism must be a two-way street, not a shield for some and a sword for others.' BJP's Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari echoed similar sentiments. 'When TMC MP Mahua Moitra made disgraceful remarks against Goddess Kali, was any action taken? Even after 200 FIRs? Sayani Ghosh posted about Maha Dev, and there were no consequences,' Adhikari alleged. Panoli has been remanded to judicial custody until June 13. Her arrest has sparked fierce debate about freedom of expression, selective law enforcement, and communal politics. While social media platforms were flooded with calls for justice, Panoli also faced a wave of threats and trolling, prompting her to remove the post and publicly apologise.

Under ‘Oraniyil Tamil Nadu', 30% voters in a booth should be made DMK members: Stalin
Thirty percent of the voters should be members of the DMK by the next Assembly election, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said in a special resolution at the party general council meeting held in Madurai on Sunday. To strive for another term in the government and to fight for the rights of the State, the people of Tamil Nadu should be brought under an umbrella in the upcoming Assembly election. 'Under 'Oraniyil Tamil Nadu', booth-committee members should visit every doorstep in their areas to explain to them about the schemes and the State's fights for achieving its autonomy,' he said. He called for expanding the party membership and told cadres that at least 30% of the voters in a booth limit should be members of the party. In the next two months, all party cadre starting from district level to branch level, should have achieved the targets earmarked for them, Mr. Stalin said He directed the district secretaries and constituency in-charges to vigorously monitor the enrolment drive. They were asked to ensure that the targets were met within the coming months, adding that he would personally supervise the enrolment drive. While addressing the general council members, Mr. Stalin recalled some of DMK's significant political developments in Madurai district. Anti-Hindi agitations in 1963, march (padayatra) for Tiruchendur issue in 1982 started in Madurai. After the task of leading the DMK youth wing was entrusted with him, the long journey started with a speech at Jhansi Rani Park in Madurai, he said. 'The general council meeting which happens in such a place will definitely boost the spirit of the party and cadre to fight against the authoritarian powers to achieve State autonomy,' he said. During the meeting, an announcement was made to create two new party wings for differently abled and academicians. Minister who organised the meeting, was appreciated by Mr. Stalin.
