Oklahoma's Ethan Downs flying under the radar ahead of NFL Draft
The NFL Draft is always full of surprises. But one of the biggest surprises of the pre-draft process is the lack of buzz for former Oklahoma Sooners defensive end Ethan Downs. Downs, a three-year starter for Brent Venables at defensive end may not have come away with a lot of accolades, but when it came to football, there were few Oklahoma Sooners more important than the Oklahoma native.
He did receive accolades, though. He was an All-Big 12 second-team selection in 2022 and 2023. He was recognized with the Bob Kalsu Award for leadership. And he's got production to go with his vast experience.
Downs finished his Sooners career with 110 total tackles, 33 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks, five pass deflections, and a pair of forced fumbles. He was steady as he goes for the Sooners, finishing each season of his Oklahoma career with a 76.9 grade or better per Pro Football Focus. He had 100 total pressures and 66 stops, according to Pro Football Focus.
But still, he's flying under the radar among NFL Draft circles and has a chance to go undrafted.
But why?
Yes, Texas A&M's Shemar Stewart tested off the charts athletically. But he doesn't come close to the production Downs has. Stewart recorded 21 fewer pressures and 38 fewer stops than Downs. But Stewart is projected to go in the first round of the draft.
Downs may not have the elite seasons that projected first round edge rushers Princely Unmanielen, Mike Green, Abdul Carter, or Donovan Ezeiruaku, but he certainly has more production than Stewart and Downs tested well.
It's why Ethan Downs could be the steal of this draft or undrafted free agent class. Downs will be a player that defensive coordinators and front office personnel love. Because he's one of those players that you can rely on day in and day out, down after down, to do his job.

Broncos Safety Keidron Smith's Roster Hopes Hanging by a Thread

Broncos Safety Keidron Smith's Roster Hopes Hanging by a Thread originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Once an undrafted fringe player, Keidron Smith surprised many by making the Denver Broncos' 53-man roster after a strong preseason in 2024, contributing on special teams during the regular season. Advertisement He was waived after playing in nine games, ultimately landing on the practice squad, but has another shot at making the Broncos' roster in training camp this year. According to Christopher Hart of Mile High Report, Smith is battling with several other players for a roster spot at the safety position, and he may be in danger of being cut. "Talanoa Hufanga, Brandon Jones, and P.J. Locke are the three players I feel are the safe locks for the roster. That leaves five players fighting for two spots," Hart said. "Standing out on special teams and making the most of his time in defensive reps during the preseason will be paramount in order to make the team." Denver Broncos safety Keidron Smith (43) recovers fumble in the second quarter against the Arizona Cardinals at Empower Field at Mile Chenoy-Imagn Images Hart acknowledges Smith's time in college at the University of Kentucky as extremely productive and credits him for shining in the preseason, snagging multiple interceptions, as a main reason why he made the roster last year. Advertisement "Without question, the training camp battles for the backup spots on the roster on the backend of the team's defense will be some of the most competitive," Hart said. Smith's journey is just another example of how tough it is to make it in the NFL. As Denver heads into training camp, he must prove he has more than just the flashes he showed to make the active roster this season. 3 Oklahoma City Thunder trade targets after winning 2025 NBA Finals

The post 3 Oklahoma City Thunder trade targets after winning 2025 NBA Finals appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Oklahoma City Thunder have captured their first NBA championship, but Sam Presti and the front office are already plotting how to extend this window and build a dynasty. With a roster loaded with young talent, a deep war chest of draft picks, and financial flexibility, OKC is uniquely positioned to pursue bold moves. Here are three realistic trade targets who could help the Thunder repeat as champions—and the deals that could bring them to Oklahoma City. Giannis Antetokounmpo Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images Giannis Antetokounmpo remains one of the most dominant two-way forces in basketball, and although he hasn't formally requested a trade, recent reports indicate he's open-minded about his future outside Milwaukee. For the Thunder, acquiring Giannis would be a franchise-altering move, instantly making them favorites to repeat and cementing their status as the league's next great dynasty. Advertisement Proposed Trade: This deal gives Milwaukee a blue-chip young big in Holmgren, two rotation-ready forwards, and a treasure trove of picks to kickstart a rebuild or retool around Damian Lillard. For OKC, pairing Giannis with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams creates a terrifying core, and the Thunder's depth and remaining draft assets ensure they can weather the loss of Holmgren and picks. Cameron Johnson The Thunder's perimeter attack could use another high-volume, high-efficiency shooter, and Cameron Johnson fits the bill perfectly. Johnson has shot 39% or better from three in five of his six NBA seasons, and he's coming off a year with career-high volume (7.2 attempts per game). His size and defensive versatility make him a seamless fit in OKC's switch-heavy scheme. Advertisement Proposed Trade: John Collins Despite a strong championship run, the Thunder could use more frontcourt scoring and rebounding. John Collins, who just exercised his $26.5 million player option with the Jazz, is coming off a bounce-back season: 19.0 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 39.9% from three. His ability to play both the four and five gives OKC lineup flexibility, especially if they move Holmgren in a blockbuster. Proposed Trade: Utah acquires two young forwards with upside and a 2027 first-round pick via Houston, continuing their asset accumulation strategy. Collins gives OKC a proven scorer and rebounder who can stretch the floor, complementing Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams while lightening the load on Chet Holmgren, if he's not included in a separate blockbuster. Why These Targets? Adding any of these three players would send a clear message that the Thunder are not content with just one championship, they want to build a sustainable winner that can compete for titles year after year. The flexibility of their roster and the sheer volume of future draft picks give GM Sam Presti a rare advantage in trade negotiations. Unlike many contenders who mortgage their futures for a single star, OKC can afford to make bold moves while still maintaining a pipeline of young talent and assets for future seasons. Advertisement Giannis Antetokounmpo would bring a level of star power and championship experience that could galvanize the locker room and elevate the Thunder's already elite defense. His ability to dominate both ends of the floor would relieve pressure on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and allow the team to experiment with even more creative lineups. Meanwhile, Cameron Johnson's shooting and defensive versatility would make him a plug-and-play option, capable of closing games alongside the Thunder's core. John Collins, with his athleticism and improved three-point shooting, would give OKC another dimension in the frontcourt, especially against bigger playoff opponents. The Thunder's championship window is wide open, but the Western Conference remains fiercely competitive. By targeting a superstar like Giannis, a sharpshooter like Johnson, or a versatile big like Collins, OKC can further solidify its status as the NBA's next dynasty. With Sam Presti's aggressive mindset and the franchise's asset base, don't be surprised if one of these bold moves becomes reality before the 2025-26 season tips off. Ravens Icon Justin Tucker's Agent Speaks Out On Major NFL Announcement

Ravens Icon Justin Tucker's Agent Speaks Out On Major NFL Announcement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Baltimore Ravens finally made the decision, as kicker Justin Tucker was accused of sexual misconduct by several Baltimore-area massage therapists, to release the iconic All-Pro. Advertisement Now, the NFL has announced Tucker's punishment - and Tucker's side isn't very happy about it. Tucker, 35, is suspended without pay for the first 10 weeks of the 2025 season for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. In response, the following statement has been released by Tucker's representative Rob Roche ... "We are disappointed with the NFL's decision. Justin has always strived to carry himself in a way that would make his family and community proud. He stands by his previous statements. In order to put this difficult episode behind him and get back on the field as soon as possible, we have advised Justin to accept this resolution and close this matter. Advertisement "The people who know Justin best know his character and understand that while he remains fully committed to excellence as a football player, he is deeply dedicated to his most important lifetime roles as a father, husband, and friend.' In the league's press release, the suspension will take effect on roster cut day, August 26 and he will be eligible for reinstatement on November 11. Tucker is currently still a free agent. If he were to be signed by a team, he is able to serve his suspension under contract. He is able to communicate and try out for a club, and if he is signed, is able to attend training camp this offseason. Advertisement Six massage therapists have come forward, accusing Tucker of inappropriate behavior during sessions that took place between 2012 and 2016. The allegations include claims that Tucker exposed himself, made inappropriate contact, and left bodily fluids on massage tables. After the investigation had gotten underway, Tucker released a statement to address the allegations. "The allegations against me in The Baltimore Banner article about me are unequivocally false. Throughout my career as a professional athlete, I have always sought to conduct myself with the utmost professionalism," said Tucker. "I have never before been accused of misconduct of any kind, and I have never been accused of acting inappropriately in front of a massage therapist or during a massage therapy session or during other bodywork. I have never received any complaints from a massage therapist, have never been dismissed from a massage therapy or bodywork session, and have never been told that I was not welcome at any spa or other place of business." Advertisement Tucker - maybe the best kicker of his generation - is coming off the worst year of his career. He made a disastrous 73.3 percent of his field goal attempts (especially compared to his all-time best career average of 89.1 percent). He also missed more field goals between 40 and 49 yards than he had in any other season. With the 10th pick of the sixth round of the NFL Draft, the Ravens took Arizona kicker Tyler Loop, who has the inside track to be Tucker's replacement this season.
