Moscow claims to have seized the entire Luhansk region of Ukraine, nearly three years into the Russia-Ukraine war that started in February 2022. This makes Luhansk the first Ukrainian region to be fully occupied by Russia since the Russian annexation of the Crimean Peninsula in 2014. In September 2022, Putin had announced the annexation of four Ukrainian regions — including Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia — a move opposed by major western nations.

Russia's Transportation Minister found dead hours after Putin fired him

Russian's Transport Minister was found dead, hours after the Kremlin announced he had been dismissed by President Vladimir Putin. Investigators said on Monday (July 7, 2025) that he apparently killed himself. The Kremlin did not give a reason for the firing of Roman Starovoit, who served as Transport Minister since May 2024, and it was unclear when exactly he died and whether it was related to an alleged embezzlement case, as some Russian media suggested. Russia's Investigative Committee, the top criminal investigation agency, said the body of Starovoit, 53, was found with a gunshot wound in his car parked in Odintsovo, a neighbourhood just west of the capital where members of Russia's elite live. A gun previously presented to him as an official gift was found next to his body. Also Read | Vladimir Putin fires Russia's Transport Minister Starovoit A criminal probe was launched into the death, and investigators saw death by suicide as the most likely cause, according to committee's spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko, who did not say when Starovoit died. Russian media have reported that Starovoit's dismissal could have been linked to an investigation into the embezzlement of state funds allocated for building fortifications in the Kursk region, where he served as governor before being appointed Transportation Minister. The alleged embezzlement has been cited as one of the reasons for deficiencies in Russia's defensive lines that failed to stem a surprise Ukrainian incursion in the region launched in August 2024. In the stunning attack, Ukraine's battle-hardened mechanized units quickly overwhelmed lightly armed Russian border guards and inexperienced army conscripts. Hundreds were taken prisoner. The incursion was a humiliating blow to the Kremlin — the first time the country's territory was occupied by an invader since World War II. The Russian military had announced its troops had fully reclaimed the border territory in April — nearly nine months after losing chunks of the region. Starovoit's successor as Kursk governor, Alexei Smirnov, stepped down in December and was arrested on embezzlement charges in April. Some Russian media have alleged that Starovoit also could have faced charges as part of the investigation. His dismissal also followed a weekend of travel chaos as Russian airports were forced to ground hundreds of flights due to Ukrainian drone attacks. Most commentators said, however, that the air traffic disruptions have become customary amid frequent Ukrainian drone raids and were unlikely to have triggered his dismissal. An official order releasing Starovoit from his post was published on the Kremlin's website Monday (July 6, 2025) morning without giving a reason for his dismissal. Shortly before the news of Starovoit's death broke, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov refused to comment on the reasons behind his dismissal. Mr. Peskov praised Starovoit's replacement, Andrei Nikitin, who had been appointed deputy Transport Minister five months ago. Shock in Moscow: Putin fires transport minister Roman Starovoyt, hours later he's found dead with gunshot wound

In a tragic turn of events, Russia's transport minister, Roman Starovoyt , was discovered dead just hours after being dismissed by Vladimir Putin. His untimely death, ruled an apparent suicide, comes amid a deepening corruption scandal and mounting pressure from Russia's faltering war effort. His firing followed scrutiny over border failures during Ukraine's Kursk incursion. The Putin minister was found dead in Oman. According to Russia's Investigative Committee, Starovoyt, 53, was discovered on Monday in his private vehicle with a gunshot wound. He was in his home on the outskirts of Moscow, in Odintsovo. His death has prompted a criminal investigation, as per a report by Newsweek. Prior to his appointment to the transportation position by Putin in May 2024, Starovoyt served as the governor of the Kursk region of Russia. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Treatment That Might Help You Against Knee Pain Knee pain| search ads Find Now Undo ALSO READ: After Texas, now North Carolina is under water - several counties under flash flood warnings, thousands without power and water However, before he resigned, Starovoyt's work preparing the border defenses came under increased scrutiny due to Ukraine's incursion into Kursk, and his deputy was linked to a corruption scandal involving the border fortifications, according to The Moscow Times. Live Events Andrey Nikitin, a Starovoyt deputy, has been named acting minister of transportation by Putin. Evgeny Minchenko, a political analyst, described Putin's firing of Starovoyt as "predictable' and the events in Kursk had "caught up with him." Officials suspect suicide, as Starovoyt had reportedly been linked to a corruption case involving defense construction funds. Was he connected to the Kursk corruption scandal? The unexpected Ukrainian invasion started in August of last year, and Alexi Smirnov took over as Kursk's governor from May to December, succeeding Starovoyt. Because of how he handled the incursion, he resigned. In April 2025, the Russian Interior Ministry arrested Smirnov and his first deputy, Alexei Dedov, on charges of embezzling public funds related to contracts for building Kursk fortifications. Russian media, including the newspaper Kommersant and pro-Kremlin Telegram channels, reported that Starovoyt was involved in the case. There was no explanation provided by the Kremlin for Starovoyt's termination. According to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, Putin's decree would have indicated that the dismissal was due to a lack of confidence, as per the report. Peskov claimed that "in the case of Starovoyt, there was no such wording," according to state-run RIA Novosti. How is the Ukraine war straining Russia's transport system? Moscow's invasion of Ukraine has had a significant impact on Russia's transportation sector, with high interest rates, disruptions to the transport network from Ukrainian attacks, and Western sanctions affecting key sectors. At the airports in Sheremetyevo, Moscow, and Pulkovo, St. Petersburg, hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed over the weekend, resulting in lengthy wait times for thousands of passengers. FAQs Why did Putin fire Roman Starovoyt? No official reason was given, but analysts attribute his dismissal to Ukraine's incursion into Kursk and a corruption investigation involving border defense failures. Is Starovoyt's death under investigation? Yes, Russian authorities have launched a criminal investigation, but it is currently believed to be a suicide.
