Russia Takes Full Control of Ukraine's Luhansk Region: Kremlin | Vantage on Firstpost | N18G
Moscow claims to have seized the entire Luhansk region of Ukraine, nearly three years into the Russia-Ukraine war that started in February 2022. This makes Luhansk the first Ukrainian region to be fully occupied by Russia since the Russian annexation of the Crimean Peninsula in 2014. In September 2022, Putin had announced the annexation of four Ukrainian regions — including Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia — a move opposed by major western nations.

Russian drone, missile strikes kill at least 2, injure over 14 in Ukraine
At least two people were killed overnight into Saturday as Russia continued to pound Ukraine with hundreds of drones as part of a stepped-up bombing campaign that has further dampened hopes for a breakthrough in efforts to end the more than three-year-old war. Two people died and 14 were wounded when Russian forces attacked the Bukovina area in the Chernivtsi region of southwestern Ukraine with four drones and a missile, regional Governor Ruslan Zaparaniuk said on Saturday. He said that the two people died due to falling debris from a drone. A drone attack in Ukraine's western Lviv region wounded six people, regional Governor Maksym Kozytskyi said. Three people were wounded in Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine when the city was hit by eight drones and two missiles, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said. Russia fired 597 drones and decoys, along with 26 cruise missiles, into Ukraine overnight into Saturday, Ukraine's air force said. Of these, 319 drones and 25 cruise missiles were shot down, and 258 decoy drones were lost, likely having been electronically jammed. Russia has been stepping up its long-range attacks on Ukrainian cities. Earlier this week, Russia fired more than 700 attack and decoy drones at Ukraine overnight, topping previous nightly barrages for the third time in two weeks and targeting Lutsk near the border with Poland in western Ukraine, a region that is a crucial hub for receiving foreign military aid. Poland's air force scrambled fighter jets in areas bordering Ukraine, Polish officials said. Russia's intensifying long-range attacks have coincided with a concerted Russian effort to break through parts of the roughly 1,000-kilometre front line, where Ukrainian troops are under severe pressure. Russia's Defence Ministry said it shot down 33 Ukrainian drones overnight into Saturday.

US-China talks: State Secretary Marco Rubio meets Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi; discusses 'areas of potential cooperation,' amid trade war
US State Secretary Marco Rubio with Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi (AP image) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on Friday in Kuala Lumpur, amid the trade war between the two countries. In the meeting they agreed to look for 'areas of potential cooperation' between Washington and Beijing. These high-level meetings took place amid Trump's threats to impose 10% tariffs on the BRICS countries, including China and India. Their first in-person meeting took place on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) regional security forum in Malaysia's capital. This meeting came as tensions between the two countries remain high over trade disputes, security issues, and China's support for Russia's war in Ukraine. 'Look, we're two big, powerful countries, and there are always going to be issues that we disagree on,' Rubio told reporters after the meeting. He described the talks as constructive and positive, but said there was still a lot of work to do. He also emphasised the need for better communication and trust. Rubio also suggested US President Donald Trump might visit China to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping . 'The odds are high. I think both sides want to see it happen,' he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo China's Foreign Ministry in a statement described the meeting as 'positive, pragmatic and constructive.' It further added that both countries agreed to 'increase communication and dialogue' and 'explore expanding areas of cooperation while managing differences.' Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi had called for 'jointly finding a correct way for China and the US to get along in the new era' in the statement. While trade disputes remain a major source of tension, Rubio said they were not the main topic of discussion this time. 'I'm not the trade negotiator,' he said, adding that the talks focused on other areas of cooperation. "We certainly appreciate the role trade plays in our bilateral relationships with individual countries. But the bulk of our talks here have been about all the other things that we cooperate on,' Rubio said. Rubio's meeting with Wang came less than 24 hours after he met Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov in Kuala Lumpur. There, they discussed possible new ways to restart Russia-Ukraine peace talks. These high-level meetings took place amid concerns in Southeast Asian countries about US policies, especially President Trump's threats to impose new tariffs on allies and rivals alike. Rubio emphasised that while trade remained a concern for many countries, however, security issues and China's growing domination remained crucial topics of discussion. 'Of course, it's raised. It's an issue,' Rubio said. 'But I wouldn't say it solely defines our relationship with many of these countries. There are a lot of other issues that we work together on, and I think there was great enthusiasm that we were here and that we're a part of this.' President Trump views China as America's biggest competitor, especially in trade and technology. His administration has warned about possible new tariffs on Chinese goods, though negotiations have made little progress.

Russia, North Korea foreign ministers meet, Pyongyang backs Ukraine war
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with his North Korean counterpart in the coastal city of Wonsan on Saturday, during which Pyongyang reaffirmed its support for Russia's military actions in Ukraine, the TASS state news agency reported. Lavrov flew out of Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur on Friday following the ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting, arriving the same day in Wonsan, North Korea, home to a newly opened seaside resort but also known for its missile and naval facilities. Lavrov's visit is the latest high-level meeting between the two countries as they upgrade their strategic cooperation to now include a mutual defence pact. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like What Happens When You Massage Baking Soda Into Your Scalp Read More "We exchanged views on the situation surrounding the Ukrainian crisis ... Our Korean friends confirmed their firm support for all the objectives of the special military operation, as well as for the actions of the Russian leadership and armed forces," TASS quoted Lavrov as saying. The South Korean intelligence service has said North Korea may be preparing to deploy additional troops in July or August, after sending more than 10,000 soldiers to fight with Russia in the war against Ukraine. Live Events North Korea has agreed to dispatch 6,000 military engineers and builders for reconstruction in Russia's Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces launched a mass cross-border incursion nearly a year ago. Russian news agencies also reported Lavrov's arrival and said after North Korea he is expected to travel to China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting , which is set to take place on Monday and Tuesday. TASS said the new Wonsan coastal resort could boost Russian tourism to North Korea, citing the resumption of direct trains from Moscow to Pyongyang and a project to build a bridge across the Tumen River forming part of the boundary between North Korea, China and Russia. TASS quoted Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko as saying more high-level delegations would visit North Korea later this year. Rudenko said the accord on strategic partnership "clearly meets the changing needs over recent decades and strengthens traditionally friendly, good-neighbourly Russian-Korean relations to a qualitatively new level as allies."
