"BrahMos Was Primary Offensive Weapon": DRDO Chief On Op Sindoor
India's Operation Sindoor that destroyed terror infrastructure and military assets deep inside Pakistan was a declaration of the country's ability to defend itself using homegrown technology, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) chairman Samir Kamat said today.
Mr Kamat highlighted not just the courage of soldiers but also the technological backbone that supported them.
The DRDO chief's comments at the 4th convocation ceremony of Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT) in Pune came hours after Air Chief Marshal AP Singh said the Indian Air Force (IAF) shot down five Pakistani fighter jets and a large aircraft during Operation Sindoor, describing it as the largest-ever recorded surface-to-air kill by India.
"Operation Sindoor was more than a mission. It was a declaration of India's ability to stand tall through self-reliance, strategic foresight, and indigenous technological strength. It was a statement to the world that India has the capability to protect its borders through homegrown technology," Mr Kamat said.
India's BrahMos had struck several targets in Pakistan successfully, demonstrating the fearsome power of the cruise missile jointly developed with Russia.
"When it comes to offensive weapons, BrahMos was the primary weapon used, mainly air-launched BrahMos, which were launched from our Sukhoi-30MK1 platform. When it comes to defensive weapon systems, the Akash system, the D-4 system, which is an anti-drone system, and the MR-SAM were used," Mr Kamat said.
"All the sensors were networked using the Akashteer, which helped in identifying the threats coming towards us and then deploying the right kind of weapon to neutralise those threats. An early warning and control aircraft was also used for airborne surveillance. So this is broadly what I can say without getting into too much operational details," the DRDO chief said.
The Akashteer is an AI-based system which networks all sensors and weapons and allows decision-making on which weapon would be the most appropriate to use based on the threats which are coming, Mr Kamat added.
The Akashteer system is part of the Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS) designed by the Indian Air Force (IAF). The IACCS was the tip of the spear in the air defence (AD) component of Operation Sindoor.

They are reflective of Pakistan's record of nuclear sabre rattling from time to time while trying to pass itself off as a responsible nuclear actor. In an address to the Pakistani diaspora in Florida's Tampa, Munir reportedly made the nuclear threat in case his country faced an existential threat in a future war with India. He also warned that Islamabad would destroy Indian infrastructure, if they hit water flow to Pakistan. 'We are a nuclear nation. If we think we are going down, we'll take half the world down with us," media reports quoted Munir as saying. He is currently on a visit to the US, his second in two months. Abdul Qadeer Khan, known as the 'father of Pakistan's atomic weapons programme", ran an illicit network that transferred nuclear technology to Libya, Iran, and North Korea – a proliferation scandal without any parallel. The same state apparatus is now using it as a diplomatic and psychological weapon. Munir's latest rhetoric underscores how dangerous it is to have the nuclear button effectively controlled by the military rather than elected civilian leadership. In a functioning democracy, the commander of the armed forces is subordinate to civilian leadership. In Pakistan, it is the opposite. This concentration of power makes provocative statements like Munir's, like policy signals from the highest levels of the country's real power centre. THE TERROR NEXUS The nuclear threat has not been made in isolation. Weeks before the Pahalgam terror attack, Munir said Pakistan will not forget the issue of Kashmir. 'It was our jugular vein," he had said, while his comments were trashed by India. He had also said Hindus and Muslims cannot stay together. This was followed by the deadly attack in which people were targeted for their religion and killed at point blank range. AN IRRESPONSIBLE NUCLEAR STATE These developments reinforce what security analysts have long warned against: Pakistan is an irresponsible custodian of nuclear weapons and there is a real danger of these assets – or the know-how to use them – falling into the hands of non-state actors. The problem becomes acute when the military feels emboldened by foreign support. Historically, whenever the United States has extended an open hand to Pakistani generals, they have responded by baring their aggressive instincts. WHERE IS US ACCOUNTABILITY? This raises a pressing question: will the US hold Pakistan accountable for such provocative and destabilising statements? President Donald Trump has repeatedly spoken about the need to contain nuclear conflict, yet Munir's comments directly contradict that goal. Munir's threats fit a familiar cycle: military leaders tightening their grip on power, sidelining democratic institutions, and using external aggression to bolster their internal standing. Emboldened by his reception in Washington, the next step could be even more dangerous – a silent or open coup and possibly the presidency. The world should take note that this is not just about rhetoric. Slamming Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir over his nuclear threat against India, the Ministry of External Affairs said, 'Nuclear sabre-rattling is Pakistan's stock-in-trade.' In a statement on Monday, 11 August, the ministry said, 'Our attention has been drawn to remarks reportedly made by the Pakistani Chief of Army Staff while on a visit to the United States.' 'The international community can draw its own conclusions on the irresponsibility inherent in such remarks, which also reinforce the well-held doubts about the integrity of nuclear command and control in a state where the military is hand-in-glove with terrorist groups,' the external affairs ministry said. The ministry expressed regret that 'these remarks should have been made from the soil of a friendly third country'. 'India has already made it clear that it will not give in to nuclear blackmail. We will continue to take all steps necessary to safeguard our national security,' the ministry said. Meanwhile, sources in the government told news agency PTI, 'There is real danger of nuclear weapons falling in the hands of non-state actors in Pakistan.' Sources said that Asim Munir's nuclear threat from US soil showed that Pakistan is an 'irresponsible' state with such weapons. They added that his statement 'is part of a pattern'. 'Whenever the US supports the Pakistan military, they always show their true colours.' 'It is a symptom that democracy does not exist in Pakistan and it is their military which controls the country,' they said. 'Emboldened by reception and welcome by the US, the next step could possibly be a silent or open coup in Pakistan so that the Field Marshal becomes the President,' the sources said. The comments came after Pakistani military chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir said that Islamabad would take down 'half the world' with it, if his country faces an existential threat in future with India. 'We are a nuclear nation; if we think we are going down, we'll take half the world down with us,' media reports quoted Munir as saying. He said that Islamabad will defend its water rights 'at all costs' if India proceeds with dam construction on the Indus River. 'We will wait for India to build a dam, and when they do so, we will destroy it,' Munir told members of the Pakistani-American community in Tampa, Florida, according to a report published today in The Dawn. Munir's nuclear threat came on the day the world marked the 80th anniversary of the US dropping an atomic bomb on Nagasaki in 1945. Asim Munir recently visited two US cities over the weekend and flew to Brussels on Sunday after completing his second high-profile trip to the United States in less than two months. Like his previous visit, he engaged with political and military leadership in the host country, Dawn reported. In Tampa, the Pakistan army chief attended the US Central Command Centcom change of command ceremony. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations ISPR, his engagements included the retirement ceremony of General Michael E Kurilla, Commander of CENTCOM, and the change of command where Admiral Brad Cooper assumed charge.

‘If you win, all is good, if you lose, all is bad': BJP ministers accuse Rahul Gandhi, INDIA bloc of ‘shaming democracy'
Even as both Houses of Parliament were disrupted again Monday over the issue of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar, the BJP took on Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and his INDIA bloc allies, accusing them of 'shaming not just the nation but democracy'. BJP leaders said that by questioning Constitutional institutions and their processes, the Opposition is seeking to 'trigger anarchy' to 'destablise the nation'. Union ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Dharmendra Pradhan accused the Opposition, and especially Gandhi, of 'speaking the language of anti-national' forces aiming to 'uproot democracy' from the country. Gandhi's 'vote-theft' allegations and continuing protests over the SIR lack direction and that his politics is not 'issue and policy-based', they said. The Delhi Police detained Opposition MPs, including Gandhi, Monday as they took out a march from Parliament House to the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters to protest against the Bihar SIR. Union Agriculture Minister Chouhan alleged that Rahul Gandhi and the Opposition are defaming democracy 'under pressure from anti-national forces'. 'First, they shamed the country, the Election Commission, and even the Supreme Court. They shamed the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), played with respect for the armed forces. They questioned the valour of the armed forces. They are destroying democracy. They are playing with the honour of Constitutional institutions. They want to spread anarchy,' Chouhan said. 'Rahul Gandhi is lying again and again. He lied on Operation Sindoor – but lost his voice after the army provided proof. They raised questions on EVMs, saying they lost the elections because of EVMs. When they were asked for proof, it was not provided. After the Supreme Court pulled him up, he became Rann-chor-das (a deserter). Now the EVM has been left behind, and they have come to the SIR, defaming the voter list,' he added. Taking on the senior Congress leader as well as the larger INDIA bloc, Chouhan asked whether non-BJP governments across several states and the personal electoral victories of the Opposition alliance's leaders were a result of the same alleged issues in the electoral process. The former Madhya Pradesh chief minister also sought to 'caution the people of India' against what he alleged was a large-scale 'conspiracy to destabilise the country', demanding why Gandhi was not willing to give an affidavit to the ECI regarding his allegations. 'I want to ask Rahul Gandhi ji and the leaders of the INDI alliance – did the Congress win in Karnataka due to issues in the voter list? Did the Congress win in Telangana due to malpractices by the Election Commission?…in Himachal Pradesh due to mistakes and malpractices of the Election Commission and the voter list? Did the DMK…win in Tamil Nadu due to issues in the voter list? In Jharkhand, has the Hemant Soren-led INDI alliance government been formed due to issues with the voter list?' he asked. 'Rahul ji, did you yourself win due to issues with the voter list…and Priyanka ji too? Did (Samajwadi Party president) Akhilesh (Yadav) ji also win due to issues with the voter list? You level allegations and run away? The Election Commission is asking you for an affidavit… You do not want to… You are playing with the honour of the nation. You are committing the sin of weakening the nation and democracy by shaming them. If you win, all is well; if you lose, all is bad? I want to caution the people of the country – be wary of their (the Opposition's) conspiracies,' he added. Congress and Opposition left with only 'votebank politics': Dharmendra Pradhan Pradhan, addressing a press conference at the party's national headquarters, said that Gandhi, 'who cites the Constitution on a daily basis' was the sole political figure in the country engaging in 'anti-India' deeds since the Congress's 'lack of direction has become its problem'. 'The SIR is not happening for the first time; in every state, at the national level, the EC has a rule-based process – the purification of the electoral rolls…After Independence, it has had a continuous process (in this regard). Earlier, the Congress used to tell lies on the EVM; sometimes they rake up Maharashtra, sometimes Haryana, to make a new mountain of lies. (Due to poll losses) in 2014, 2019 and 2024 especially, the Congress has reached a level of bankruptcy due to continuous losses,' Pradhan alleged. 'There is no clear issue they have in hand, or a policy…(so) they are making a political issue out of this…(they) lied about Rafale jet planes, then they helped China by raising questions related to India's sovereignty regarding which the judiciary, for the first time in Independent India, made such harsh remarks about a politician…They do not have any public honour left in a democracy. With anarchy slowly combining with arrogance, this is a deliberate strategy to trigger destabilisation in the country. You will win elections, then everything is fine. If you lose…you will remember the issues with the system,' he added. Accusing Gandhi of having 'no basic knowledge about technology, the Election Commission's procedure or the country', Pradhan alleged that the Congress and the Opposition were left with only 'votebank politics' and wanted to 'get by on the votes of infiltrators whom they have made voters'. 'When the Election Commission, from a Constitutional and impartial point of view, tells them the facts, they talk about destroying the Election Commission :'we will drop an atom bomb and the Election Commission will disintegrate'. This is the language used by our rival nations. Big powers which want to uproot democracy from a democratic Bharat, they use the language that the Leader of Opposition of the country does,' he alleged. 'I want to appeal to them to do issue-based politics; just triggering fear in the hearts of infiltrators, or in those of a particular section (of society), you will not be able to break the democratic structure of this country by taking on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, the decision of the people of the country or its Constitutional system,' he added.
