Tourism agency association: Protests could tarnish Malaysia's image, impact Visit Malaysia year

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia Tourism Agency Association (Mata) has expressed its concern over the impact of street demonstrations, particularly in the lead-up to Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026), as they could threaten public security and tarnish the country's reputation as a safe tourism destination.
It said that with Malaysia actively promoting VM2026 to attract millions of international visitors, such continued large-scale public demonstrations could hinder those efforts.
"A tarnished national image can directly affect tourist arrivals and foreign investments. Demonstrations can affect business operations and employment opportunities, and increase the overall cost of living for the people. The people's peace and safety are priorities that cannot be compromised," it said in a statement today.
Mata also warned that mobilising the people to take to the streets posed a security risk, including potential provocation, conflicts and disorders that could threaten public order.
It also said that Malaysia, known as a destination for Islamic and nature-based tourism, would face huge challenges if street demonstrations continue and receive negative media exposure globally.
Meanwhile, Mata president Datuk Sri Dr Mohd Khalid Harun said in the same statement that Malaysia is currently in a strong post-pandemic economic recovery phase.
"Stability and peace are the foundation of progress in the tourism industry. Without safety guarantees, tourists will choose other destinations, which are more stable and safer," he said.
He said that Mata recognises the people's right to voice their opinions, but stressed that every action must be carried out responsibly without compromising national harmony.
"We must work together to maintain stability to ensure VM2026 is successful and the people's economy continues to grow," he said.

Kelantan MB urges preachers to tackle modern challenges, protect Muslim identity

KOTA BHARU: Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud has called on preachers in the state to deepen their understanding of contemporary challenges to effectively counter negative influences threatening Muslim faith and identity. He highlighted the urgency of this task, given rapid technological advancements and the widespread availability of information. 'Information spreads at lightning speed. New issues emerge daily, and preachers must thoroughly grasp them, especially those involving misleading ideologies aimed at weakening Muslim identity,' he said during the presentation ceremony of the Third Series of the Tafaqquh Fiddin Certificate. Mohd Nassuruddin also urged the state's Dakwah Halaqat Division to adopt a more structured approach in guiding the community. 'The syllabus for this programme was designed to address current societal needs, covering foundational Islamic studies while integrating modern knowledge and teaching methods,' he added. A total of 68 participants, including halaqat officers and assistants, completed the programme, which ran from July 2024 to March 2025. - Bernama

Malaysia launches first waqf for turtle conservation in Terengganu

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sultan of Terengganu, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, has launched Malaysia's first waqf dedicated to marine conservation, focusing on endangered turtle species. The initiative, named 'Wakaf Kelestarian Alam: Konservasi Penyu Terengganu,' aims to strengthen conservation efforts through structured Islamic financing. During the event, Sultan Mizan also introduced the RHB Sukuk Dana Hafeez, a financial instrument designed to support the waqf programme. The Sultanah of Terengganu, Sultanah Nur Zahirah, was also present. A Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was signed between Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) and RHB Islamic Bank Berhad, formalising their collaboration in implementing the waqf initiative. UMT Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohd Zamri Ibrahim highlighted the partnership as an innovative way to sustain research and conservation while encouraging public involvement through waqf contributions. 'This initiative aligns with UMT's commitment to using knowledge and research for ecosystem preservation while promoting sustainable development guided by Islamic economic principles,' he said. Datuk Adissadikin Ali, Managing Director of RHB Islamic Bank, stated that the sukuk fund represents a progressive step in waqf financing, offering transparent and inclusive opportunities for contributors to support environmental conservation. - Bernama

Animal crossing remark sparks verbal jibe in Dewan Rakyat

KUALA LUMPUR: Tensions rose sharply in the Dewan Rakyat after Hulu Langat MP Mohd Sany Hamzan made remarks aimed at Pasir Mas MP Ahmad Fadhli Shaari during the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). The exchange on Monday (Aug 4) began when Ahmad Fadhli called on the government to consider building a new highway linking Gerik in Perak to Jeli in Kelantan under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. He said the current route, Federal Route 4, also known as the East-West Highway, was a narrow two-lane road without a divider, prone to accidents and often used by roaming elephants. Mohd Sany then stood up to ask why the project was not pursued when Perikatan Nasional (PN) was in power. 'I just want to ask Pasir Mas, earlier you mentioned elephants, but you didn't mention apes and goats. 'Also, didn't you ask for this highway when your coalition was in government?' he said. The remarks came amid ongoing controversy surrounding Ahmad Fadhli's recent Facebook post, which depicted Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and two regional leaders as caricatures of animals. He has been urged to apologise for allegedly mocking Malaysia's efforts to broker peace between Thailand and Cambodia. Ahmad Fadhli responded by saying the question matched the person asking it. 'Those animal names are quite fitting. You can include them in Hulu Langat's speech next time. Sometimes, the question really does reflect the person asking it,' he said. The comment triggered a row, with Mohd Sany demanding a retraction. 'I asked respectfully. We're friends. You're from PAS, an Islamic party. That comment was rude and inappropriate,' he said. Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul then stepped in, saying that: 'There's no need to talk about goats, camels, monkeys or cows. Everyone, sit down and carry on with the debate.' Ahmad Fadhli then resumed his speech, criticising the lack of clear allocations for Kelantan in the 13MP. He said that while the state was mentioned in several strategic sectors, there were no figures or firm financial commitments.
