Ridgedale Elementary holds Careers on Wheels Day
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — Ridgedale Elementary School held its annual Careers on Wheels Day for its Pre-K through 5th grade students on Tuesday, allowing them to learn about several different jobs they could have.
For Careers on Wheels Day, the school invites in different businesses throughout the community and parents of students to come in and share what they do, as well as how they use a vehicle to promote their career.
Some of the representatives on Tuesday included Mon Power, a finance company, a former law enforcement agent demonstrating fingerprinting, a coach from West Virginia University (WVU) to speak on the importance of education in athletics, the West Virginia Division of Forestry, City Crane & Equipment, as well as the Maintenance department for Monongalia County Schools.
'It's very important because having exposure to different careers is one of the standards that we like to promote for our elementary students,' said Principal Sheri Petitte.
Petitte told 12 News that this event has been put together for the past decade by school counselor Meghan Beech, adding that they've only had to cancel it once due to inclement weather.
'Careers are different and the level of education is different, but everybody has to learn,' said Petitte. 'They have to be able to do math, they have to be able to do reading in order to perform any of these jobs that are represented here today.'

By participating in this annual event, Petitte says that the students are able to connect the lessons they learn in the classroom to real-world applications.
'We talk about all these things in the classroom, but we don't always have the opportunity to show students how it works in the real world,' she added. 'For them to be able to come out and be exposed to the careers and see how people are using math and science and reading, even social studies […] it gets them excited about wanting to learn and then take their skills to another level.'
Petitte shared that she hopes following this Careers on Wheels Day, that students are excited about their futures and begin exploring some of the different career options. 'College is a great thing but it's not for everyone, there are a variety of different trade schools that students can do too,' she stated.
She added that the staff at Ridgedale Elementary School also would like for the students to consider other options like the Monongalia County Technical Education Center (MTEC) and career opportunities through Monongalia County Schools.

Cell phone bills to go up in West Virginia
CHARLESTON, (WBOY) — Starting next month, West Virginians will see a slight increase to their cell phone bills. According to a release Thursday from the Public Service Commission (PSC) of West Virginia, the wireless enhanced 911 (WE911) fee in West Virginia will increase by 10.2 percent in July, going from $3.64 to $4.01. On top of that, wireless providers will begin to collect a $0.08 wireless tower fee and a $0.29 public safety wireless fee, both of which will be shown separately on customers' bills. In total, customers will see their 911 fees jump from $3.64 to $4.38. All of West Virginia under Air Quality Alert Thursday So what do these funds do? The funds from these new fees are designed to go toward improving and operating 911 and emergency phone services, the release said. The PSC collects the fees through wireless service providers, but the funds are redistributed to counties. The WE911 fee can be recalculated every two years based on costs that county commissions impose on local exchange and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) users, which is known as the enhanced 911 fee. If the enhanced 911 fee goes up by a certain percentage, the WE911 fee is set to match it. In March 2025, the PSC voted to increase the enhanced 911 fee by 10.17 percent, meaning that the WE911 fee has now been raised to match, rounding to the nearest penny. Harrison County commissioners split on future of Sunset Ellis property
CLARKSBURG, (WBOY) — What does the future hold for the Sunset Ellis property in Harrison County? County commissioners each have their own opinions on the matter. After coming out of executive session on Wednesday's county commission meeting, Commissioner Patsy Trecost made a motion to revoke the commission's offer to purchase the Sunset Ellis property, claiming that he believed the current owners had 'seller's remorse.' In a discussion on the motion, Trecost continued that his reasoning was to 'let them continue on with their family tradition.' The motion was also derived from a recent Facebook post that gained attention from the community. The motion failed in a 1-2 vote. Harrison County community pushes for restoration of Sunset Ellis Drive-In Commissioner David Hinkle stated that the commission had looked into refurbishing the theatre screen, which was significantly damaged. Estimates for those repairs were around $500,000. 12 News spoke with Hinkle about his opinion of the best route for the future of the property. 'This gives the county an opportunity to develop some land that we've never had. We'll have over 40 acres and the potential to make 30 acres of usable land,' Hinkle said. 'What we did with people sending in what they love about the Ellis, I'd like to see them send in what they think they'd like to see as to do with the property once it's developed, get a sense of what the people of Harrison County would like to see there, because with that much land, we can offer a lot.' During the discussion of the motion, Commission President Susan Thomas said that she would prefer to 'preserve the screen' if it was feasible, but would like to see numbers in regard to how many people visited the Sunset Ellis Drive-In last year.
