State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and other lenders slashed interest rates on savings accounts after a 50 basis point (0.5 per cent) repo rate cut by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
Some major banks have shifted to a flat-rate structure, irrespective of the account balance. Here are there new terms.
State Bank of India (SBI)
New rate: 2.5 per cent per annum for all balances (Effective from June 15)
Earlier rates: 2.7 per cent (below Rs 10 crore), 3 per cent (Rs 10 crore and above)
HDFC Bank
New rate: 2.75 per cent per annum across all balances (From June 10)
IndusInd Bank
Revised rates: Between 3 per cent and 5 per cent per annum (From June 16)
RBL Bank
Revised rates: Between 3 per cent and 6.75 per cent per annum (From June 16)
Impact on bank customers
Lower returns: Uniform rates at major banks mean reduced earnings on high-balance accounts.
Opportunity in smaller banks: RBL and Federal Bank offer relatively higher returns, especially for higher balances.
Need to reassess: Customers may consider shifting to banks offering better interest or explore alternative investment options like fixed deposits, liquid funds, or recurring deposits.

AP: Officials told to plug loopholes used for tax evasion
Vijayawada, June 18 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has made it clear that evading taxes while doing business in the state would no longer be tolerated. He directed officials to close all loopholes that enable tax evasion and warned that stringent action would be taken against those who attempt to exploit weaknesses in the system to harm government revenues. The Chief Minister held a meeting in the Secretariat at Amaravati near here with the officials and reviewed the tax collection and issued key directives regarding revenue targets. He also pointed out that traders and taxpayers should not be subjected to harassment during tax collection and instructed that efforts must be made to raise awareness among them about tax obligations. The Chief Minister advised officials to analyze tax payment data dating back to 2017 and said the government would reconsider the incentives currently being offered to tax evaders. He also stated that public opinion would be gathered regarding the tax collection process by government departments, stressing that public satisfaction is essential for the coalition government. Officials informed the Chief Minister that the estimated revenue for the 2025–26 financial year stands at Rs 1.24 lakh crore. Naidu noted that increased revenues would enable the government to enhance both development and welfare efforts. In a video conference with Joint Commissioners from various districts, the Chief Minister discussed GST and commercial tax collections across the state. He congratulated Joint Commissioners from Chittoor, Kurnool, Kakinada, Anantapur, and Nellore districts for achieving better tax collection results. Naidu acknowledged that the state is currently facing financial difficulties and said these issues can be resolved only by correcting the missteps taken by the previous government. Otherwise, he cautioned, the state's finances would remain in perpetual distress. He stressed the importance of cities like Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada contributing more significantly to the state's revenues. Officials informed the Chief Minister that compared to the previous year, revenue collections have increased. Mysuru: The Union govt has extended the deadline for implementing the revised Schedule M–Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)–for small and medium pharmaceutical enterprises (SMEs) with an annual turnover of Rs 250 crore or less, until the end of this year, said Khalid Ahmed Khan, deputy drug controller and president of the Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA), Karnataka state branch. He was speaking at the inauguration of a national conference on 'Enhancing Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance through Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)' and a special session on the Revamped Pharmaceutical Technology Upgradation Assistance Scheme. 8th Pay Commission: What Changes Can Employees Expect in Basic Pay and Allowances?
Last Updated: The 8th Pay Commission is set to revise and enhance salaries and pensions for central government staff and retirees. The Indian government has given the green light to the 8th Pay Commission, which will update the salaries and pensions of more than 1 crore central government employees and retirees. The changes are expected to take effect from January 1, 2026. One of the main things being looked at is the 'fitment factor", a number used to calculate revised pay. In the 7th Pay Commission, this factor was 2.57. For the 8th Pay Commission, it may go up to 2.86. If that happens, the minimum basic salary could rise from Rs 18,000 to around Rs 51,480, and the minimum pension could go up from Rs 9,000 to Rs 25,740. The final decisions will be made by the members of the newly formed commission. The upcoming 8th Pay Commission is likely to introduce major updates to how government employees are paid. Here's a simplified breakdown of what could change: – Expected Changes in Pay and Location-Based Allowances In addition to changes in basic salary, allowances such as House Rent Allowance (HRA) and Travel Allowance (TA) are also likely to be updated, depending on where an employee is posted and how much travel their job involves. As a result, two employees with the same pay grade might still earn different total amounts due to differences in their allowance entitlements. Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS): CGHS subscription rates are linked to salary slabs. So, with an increase in basic pay, CGHS charges are also expected to be revised in line with the new pay structure. – Estimated Salary Hikes Across Different Pay Grades Based on a proposed fitment factor of 2.28, estimated salary revisions have been worked out for various government pay levels. Here's a look at how the revised pay could shape up: – Grade 2000 (Level 3): The basic salary is expected to rise to Rs 57,456. Including allowances like HRA and TA, the gross monthly salary may reach Rs 74,845. After standard deductions, the estimated take-home pay would be around Rs 68,849. – Grade 4200 (Level 6): With a revised basic pay of Rs 93,708, the gross salary could total Rs 1,19,798. The net monthly salary, after deductions, is projected to be about Rs 1,09,977. – Grade 5400 (Level 9): The basic pay in this grade is estimated to go up to Rs 1,40,220. When allowances are added, the gross salary could touch Rs 1,81,073. The net take-home salary may be around Rs 1,66,401. – Grade 6600 (Level 11): The revised basic salary could be Rs 1,84,452. Including all allowances, the gross monthly income is likely to reach Rs 2,35,920. After deductions, the take-home pay is expected to be approximately Rs 2,16,825. Disclaimer: All the revised salary figures provided are based on early estimates and projections. The actual amounts may differ depending on the final recommendations made by the 8th Pay Commission and the decisions taken by the government.
