The 8th Pay Commission is set to revise and enhance salaries and pensions for central government staff and retirees.
The Indian government has given the green light to the 8th Pay Commission, which will update the salaries and pensions of more than 1 crore central government employees and retirees. The changes are expected to take effect from January 1, 2026.
One of the main things being looked at is the 'fitment factor", a number used to calculate revised pay. In the 7th Pay Commission, this factor was 2.57. For the 8th Pay Commission, it may go up to 2.86.
If that happens, the minimum basic salary could rise from Rs 18,000 to around Rs 51,480, and the minimum pension could go up from Rs 9,000 to Rs 25,740. The final decisions will be made by the members of the newly formed commission.
The upcoming 8th Pay Commission is likely to introduce major updates to how government employees are paid. Here's a simplified breakdown of what could change:
– Expected Changes in Pay and Location-Based Allowances
In addition to changes in basic salary, allowances such as House Rent Allowance (HRA) and Travel Allowance (TA) are also likely to be updated, depending on where an employee is posted and how much travel their job involves.
As a result, two employees with the same pay grade might still earn different total amounts due to differences in their allowance entitlements.
Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS): CGHS subscription rates are linked to salary slabs. So, with an increase in basic pay, CGHS charges are also expected to be revised in line with the new pay structure.
– Estimated Salary Hikes Across Different Pay Grades
Based on a proposed fitment factor of 2.28, estimated salary revisions have been worked out for various government pay levels. Here's a look at how the revised pay could shape up:
– Grade 2000 (Level 3): The basic salary is expected to rise to Rs 57,456. Including allowances like HRA and TA, the gross monthly salary may reach Rs 74,845. After standard deductions, the estimated take-home pay would be around Rs 68,849.
– Grade 4200 (Level 6): With a revised basic pay of Rs 93,708, the gross salary could total Rs 1,19,798. The net monthly salary, after deductions, is projected to be about Rs 1,09,977.
– Grade 5400 (Level 9): The basic pay in this grade is estimated to go up to Rs 1,40,220. When allowances are added, the gross salary could touch Rs 1,81,073. The net take-home salary may be around Rs 1,66,401.
– Grade 6600 (Level 11): The revised basic salary could be Rs 1,84,452. Including all allowances, the gross monthly income is likely to reach Rs 2,35,920. After deductions, the take-home pay is expected to be approximately Rs 2,16,825.

KOCHI: Indians are munching on cashew nuts like never before. Now, India accounts for more than 30% of the world's processed nuts or kernel consumption. And the demand for nuts, whole or broken, is surging at a phenomenal pace, driven largely by the bakery and snacking industry. According to the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC), the country's insatiable appetite for cashews touched 3.76 lakh tonnes in 2024, and shows no signs of slowing down. For good measure, the projected annual growth in demand stands at 8%. 'The world now looks to India for growth in the nuts and dry fruits market,' INC director Pratap Nair told TNIE. He says the Indian middle class has developed a taste for cashew nuts, not just as a snack but also as an ingredient in baked goods and other food items. 'Take Kaju Kathli, for instance: it has become one of the most popular sweets in the country, both as a gift and for personal consumption, and the demand for roasted cashews to make it is skyrocketing,' said Pratap, who is also a representative of Vijayalaxmi Cashew Company (VLC), one of India's oldest and largest cashew exporters. He noted that post-pandemic, Indians have developed a voracious appetite for snacking on cashews despite their premium price tag of around Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,500 per kilogram for whole nuts. According to INC data, India accounted for 13.5% of global raw cashew production, 36.5% of global processing share, and a staggering 30.5% of total global cashew consumption in 2024. 'The domestic demand for cashews has exploded with the growth of the bakery and snacking industries,' said Hari Nair, of Western India Cashew Company. 'Cashews are an integral part of namkeens (savouries), sweets, and even temple offerings. In fact, the Tirupati temple alone is one of the largest consumers of cashews, using them to make laddoos that are in huge demand among devotees.' Burgeoning domestic consumption has also led to a change in the dynamics of the industry, which was once clustered around Kollam, known as the cashew capital of the world. Swaminathan, a native of Tamil Nadu, established the first cashew processing unit in 1925.

Jai Corp Case: Complainant helms realty firms with no revenue but high reserves & surplus

The CBI Wednesday opposed a petition filed by Jai Corporation Ltd against an investigation by the central agency into allegations of serious financial irregularities by the Mumbai-based company led by Anand Jaikumar Jain. Seeking rejoinders from petitioner Jain and Jai Corp, which is involved in the manufacturing sector, the High Court posted the hearing after four weeks. The hearing was held after the Supreme Court on March 17 disp-osed of an appeal by Jai Corp aga-inst a Bombay High Court order directing the CBI to form an SIT to probe the allegations of irregularities to the tune of Rs 3,000 crore. The allegations against Jain stem from complaints first filed in 2021, and later in 2023, with the Economic Offence Wing (EoW) of Mumbai Police by Shoaib Sequeira, the founding member of NGO Protection of Rights Association (P.O.R.A) and a director in at least two real estate firms. Set up in 2009, P.O.R.A was started by a group of seven persons who, according to its website, 'came in contact with each other due to personal and individual litigations wherein their rights and the rights of their family members were violated due to the misuse of power and high handedness of people in governance'. It aims to 'educate and create awareness…about the various mechanisms/ methods by which corruption in governance can be exposed and curbed through citizen movements and social participation', apart from other objectives such as legal aid. Registrar of Companies (RoC) records show Sequeira is one of the two directors at Sigrun Realties, a real-estate firm incorporated in December 2005, and its subsidiary First Virasat Realcon — the other director in both firms is listed as Naveen Dsouza. But Sequeira is not a direct shareholder in either Sigrun Realties or First Virasat Realcon. Records list the major shareholders of Sigrun Realties as Stephen Dmello (73%) and Shivani Atri (24.51%). It lists the shareholders of First Virasat as Sigrun Realties (66.65%); Faizal Patel, UK (8.34%); Rakesh Soni, UK (6.45%); Anavarhushen Patel (6.45%); and, Siraj Vali Umerji Buma (6.45%). Records show Sigrun Realties has a paid up capital of Rs 34 crore with reserves and surplus of over Rs 41 crore. They also show that the company has not generated any revenue over at least the past four financial years from FY'21 to Fy'24. During this period, its financial statements do not reveal any source of funds for the amount shown in reserves and surplus. Records show First Virasat Realcon has a paid up capital of Rs 1.01 crore with reserves and surplus exceeding Rs 65 crore. It did not post any revenue over at least the past four financial years from FY'21 to Fy'24. RoC filings show the company had 'No employees other than directors'. They also do not reveal any source of funds for the amount listed in reserves and surplus. The case in court Legal representatives of Sequeira did not respond to requests for comment from The Indian Express. It was in January 2021 that Sequeira approached the EOW in 'public interest', seeking a probe against Jain related to alleged fraud to the tune of Rs 3,000 crore through various means, such as misappropriation of public funds and defrauding of investors, among others. In the complaint, he also stated that he had come to know through news reports about SEBI action against two companies headed by Jain. The EOW forwarded the complaint to SEBI. Citing lack of progress, Sequeira filed another complaint to the EOW in April 2023. The EOW forwarded the second complaint to the CBI. The central agency expressed its inability to conduct an investigation, stating that the allegations came under the jurisdiction of SEBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED). In 2024, citing lack of progress once again, Sequeira approached the Bombay High Court. Sequeira told the High Court that in 2021, he learnt that SEBI had imposed fines of Rs 20 crore and Rs 10 crore on two companies, Mumbai SEZ Ltd and Navi Mumbai SEZ pvt Ltd, respectively, in which Jain was chairman, for alleged fraudulent futures trading in stocks of Reliance Petrochemicals Ltd (RPL). In January this year, the High Court directed the CBI to form an SIT to probe into the complaints against Jain. The High Court observed that the case has 'national and international ramifications', and that 'agencies (including EOW and CBI) are passing the buck from each other'. How-ever, it also clarified: 'Transferring the investigation to SIT does not mean that we have ruled on the guilt of the person/ persons named as that is not the scope of the petition.' In its order, the High Court also said 'it was pertinent to note that this is not the first case in public interest that the petitioner (Sequeira) has agitated'. In 2005, Sequeira had raised the issue of alleged scams of nearly Rs 1 lakh crore in incentive schemes related to import and export policies. In 2006, he filed two PILs against Autoriders Finance Ltd alleging misappropriation of Rs 50 crore availed as loan from United Trust of India and misappropriation of Rs 76 crore as loan from a consortium of six banks. In April, 2009, the banks collectively recovered nearly Rs 14 crore from Autoriders Finance. Following the Bombay High Court order in the Jain case, the CBI filed an FIR. On March 17, while refusing to interfere in the HC verdict, the Supreme Court said it admired and appreciated the courage with which the HC passed the order.

Bhubaneswar: Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's one-day visit to Bhubaneswar on June 20, two high-level meetings were held here on Tuesday to review preparedness for the event. Security officials held a meeting at Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar, while Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja took stock of the preparedness at the State secretariat Lok Seva Bhawan. Senior ministers Suresh Pujari and Bibhuti Bhusan Jena inspected the Janata Maidan, the venue where Modi is scheduled to address a public meeting. 'We are prepared to welcome the Prime Minister. Apart from holding a roadshow and participate in a Triranga Yatra, the Prime Minister will also launch projects worth Rs 17,000 crore for Odisha,' Pujari told reporters. All arrangements were made for the attendance of over a lakh people at the gathering. Pujari said various cultural troupes will perform on the roadside between the airport and Janata Maidan. As per the schedule discussed in the meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary, the Prime Minister will depart from Kushinagar Airport in Uttar Pradesh at 2.05 pm on June 20 and reach Bhubaneswar Airport at 3.40 pm. The Prime Minister will then join a roadshow and reach the venue at 4.15 pm. He will return to Biju Patnaik International Airport at 5.50 pm. Thereafter, he will attend a mega public event at Janata Maidan. During the event, Modi will also unveil Odisha's 'Vision Document' and also launch several development and welfare schemes of the State government, an official said. Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena told reporters that the meeting regarding security arrangements for the Prime Minister's visit was held in the presence of the SPG.
