Clothing retailer Groupe Dynamite reports Q1 profit and revenue up from year ago

MONTREAL — Groupe Dynamite Inc. reported a first-quarter profit of $27.3 million, up from $23.9 million a year ago as its revenue rose 20 per cent.
The clothing retailer, which operates under the Garage and Dynamite banners, says the profit amounted to 24 cents per diluted share for the quarter ended May 3.
The result was up from 22 cents per diluted share in the same quarter last year.
On an adjusted basis, Groupe Dynamite says it earned 25 cents per diluted share in its latest quarter, up from an adjusted profit of 23 cents per diluted share a year ago.
Revenue totalled $226.7 million, up from $188.9 million, while comparable store sales rose 13.0 per cent.
In its outlook, Groupe Dynamite says it now expects comparable store sales growth for its full year between 7.5 per cent and 9.0 per cent, up from earlier guidance for between 5.0 per cent and 6.5 per cent.

Premier David Eby says he won't interfere with BC Ferries' decision to hire a Chinese state-owned shipyard to build four new vessels, a move that has been panned by opposition critics and unions. Ferry Authority, is its sole shareholder and it is funded by the provincial and federal governments. That hasn't stopped calls for the NDP to step in and reverse the plan. Eby said he's 'not happy with the result' of BC Ferries' five-year procurement process, but the need to replace the former Crown corporation's major vessels—most of which are 50 years old and frequently break down—is the more pressing matter. 'The decision to reopen…is not just a billion-dollar decision, it is well in excess of that when you're re-tendering again in an inflationary environment,' Eby told reporters in Victoria. 'In addition, the amount of time that would take – it took five years to get to this process, and I will not leave families sitting on the blacktop waiting for a ferry that is broken down in the strait somewhere when they need to get to see grandma.' Nevertheless, the decision created a stink in the era of 'Buy B.C.' and 'build, baby, build,' not to mention China and Canada's ongoing trade dispute. 'I agree it's not ideal that the ferry award went to China, but reopening would mean a delay in delivering ferries for British Columbians who are desperate for them. It would mean significantly increased costs, and at this point, I'm not prepared to do that,' Eby said. The premier insisted there's an opportunity to work with the federal government to make sure there's capacity for the next round of BC Ferries vessels, expected after the latest four, to be built in B.C., or at least in Canada. 'It's important to me that wherever we can, we're building Canadian, we're creating Canadian jobs. but it's equally vital to me that when there's no Canadian company willing to bid on a contract, that we don't leave families sitting on the tarmac waiting,' Eby said. 'We need the ferries urgently, and we've got to go. That doesn't excuse either our government or the federal government from the work that we need to do ahead to make sure that the next round of ferries is built right here at home.'

The town hopes this modern facility will continue to strengthen emergency response and fire safety within the community. The new fire station, now located at 6365 14th Line, will be the town's fourth municipal station and the second in Alliston, expanding coverage and improving response times for all residents. 'This important project reflects the Town's commitment to public safety, ensuring top-tier fire rescue services for all residents,' said New Tecumseth Mayor Richard Norcross. Before deciding on the site location the town conducted a thorough site suitability review, assessing servicing needs, traffic impact, and financial feasibility. The chosen spot, adjacent to the existing sports field and Public Works yard, was notably the best fit to support efficient fire operations. 'Fire Station #4 will enhance emergency preparedness and response capabilities for high-growth areas. It will be a one-storey facility with three drive-through apparatus bays, firefighter dormitories, training and meeting rooms, administrative offices, a kitchen and dining area, equipment maintenance and decontamination spaces,' shared members of the town. The new facility is set to support faster response times, strengthen emergency preparedness. It is scheduled for completion in late 2026 or early 2027, according to town officials.

Teck receives provincial certificate to extend B.C. Interior copper mine

Teck says in a release that the positive decision supports the extension for Canada's largest copper mine. The mine is located about 50 kilometres southwest of Kamloops, B.C. Teck president Jonathan Price says in a statement that site preparation work is expected to start shortly along with work to secure additional required permits, with a final construction decision by Teck's board of directors expected later this year. Price says the decision will not only support the extension, but will strengthening the North America critical minerals supply chain and contribute to jobs and economic activity. The company says the project is expected to create roughly 2,900 jobs during construction and support 1,500 jobs once in operation.
