IPL: Desperation and ‘fluke' behind CSK's Dewald Brevis heist
Chennai: As South African youngster Dewald Brevis lit up Darwin with a 56-ball 125 not out to help the Proteas draw level in the T20 series against Australia,
AB de Villiers
didn't waste too much time in coming up with a cryptic tweet.
'There was such a golden opportunity for
IPL
teams to pick up Dewald Brevis at the auction! Missed out badly. CSK either got very lucky or maybe the biggest master stroke ever. The boy can play,' De Villiers wrote on X.

CSK had one of their worst IPL seasons in 2025, but the silver lining was acquiring 'Baby AB', who has been a big hit in the T20 circuit across the world since then.
CSK, though, didn't have any plans of getting Brevis and it was a combination of desperation, smart thinking and 'a bit of fluke' that led the five-time champions roping him in after eight games.
'We had lost six of the first eight games and knew that our season was gone. And remember, we didn't get Brevis as a replacement for a batter. He came in for medium-pacer Gurjapneet Singh,' a CSK source told TOI.
Brevis had played a couple of seasons of IPL before for
Mumbai Indians
and got only 10 games, doing nothing spectacular. He was released by MI, a decision that they may end up regretting, but none of the franchises showed any interest in him during the auctions.

'He had seemed a suspect against spin in the first two seasons and the data of the player didn't suggest anything special. But with Ruturaj Gaikwad out with an injury, we were lacking firepower up top and with no chance to make the play-offs, there was scope to experiment,' the source said.
Even then, Brevis was not a straight-forward choice and CSK had thought about Jonny Bairstow, who had also gone unsold in the auction.
'Bairstow had experience, but by then we were ready to take a chance with young guns,' the source said.
It was coach
Stephen Fleming
's suggestion 'to take a chance with Brevis'.
MS Dhoni
, too, gave his nod banking on the youth factor and the 22-year-old came in to become an immediate success, scoring 42 off 25 balls against SRH in a low-scoring match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. He followed it up with a few sparkling innings that scuppered the progress of teams like KKR and Gujarat Titans.
While Brevis has gone from strength to strength since then, culminating in the highest individual innings score by a South African in T20Is on Tuesday, the CSK management still believes he isn't a finished product. The belief in the franchise is that the youngster is going to get better and CSK are ready to give him a long rope so that he can realize his potential and become one of their brave new faces.

'Womaniser, Ignoring Daughter': Mohammed Shami's Ex-Wife Makes Shocking Claim
Last Updated: Hasin Jahan alleged Mohammed Shami spends lavishly on his girlfriend, from luxury flights to pricey school fees for her kids, while refusing to bear daughter Ayra's education costs Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has once again landed in controversy after his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, alleged in an Instagram post that he did not want their 10-year-old daughter, Ayra, to be admitted to a good school. Ayra has secured a place in a prestigious international school, but Hasin Jahan accused Shami of neglecting her education in favour of his girlfriend's children. She alleged that Shami prioritises the education of his girlfriend's children and lavishes them with expensive luxuries while neglecting Ayra's needs. 'The enemies did not want my daughter to get admission in a good school, but Allah foiled their plans, and she has secured admission to a very good international school," she wrote on Instagram. Hasin Jahan has accused Shami of lavishly spending on his girlfriend, from booking luxury business class flights to paying for her children's admission to expensive schools, while allegedly refusing to bear the cost of their daughter Ayra's education. Hasin Jahan reportedly receives Rs 4 lakh per month in alimony from Shami, including Rs 2.5 lakh specifically for their daughter's expenses. 'The father of my daughter, despite being a billionaire, is playing with her life because of womanizing, while educating his mistress's children in elite schools. He spends lakhs on business class flights for some mistresses but claims he has no money for his own daughter's education," she wrote on Instagram. Mohammed Shami is set to make his comeback in the 2025 Duleep Trophy ahead of the Asia Cup. After a modest IPL season with Sunrisers Hyderabad, he was left out of the England tour. Shami married Hasin Jahan in 2014, and their only daughter, Ayra, was born in 2015, but their relationship has been marred by public allegations and legal disputes. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Cricket's Rs 1,400 crore question: Should India even play Pakistan in the Asia Cup?
India could meet Pakistan thrice in the Asia Cup that will be played in September in the UAE. The debate over whether India should face Pakistan in the upcoming Asia Cup has divided opinion across the country, reflecting ongoing discussions about one of cricket's most storied rivalries. Proponents argue that an India–Pakistan clash should proceed, asserting that the intense rivalry significantly boosts revenues, adding substantially to the coffers like no other cricket match-up. They contend that India, often regarded as the subcontinent's 'big brother', has a role in financially sustaining other cricket-playing nations. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Conversely, opponents maintain that engaging in cricket matches with a nation they were at war with merely months earlier is untenable. They argue that there is no compelling reason to schedule cricket fixtures while broader bilateral tensions between the two neighbours remain unresolved. Amidst this heated debate, a common understanding among fans persists that the India–Pakistan rivalry remains cricket's most heated and eagerly anticipated encounter. However, this perception warrants re-examination. Is the rivalry still as fierce? India and Pakistan last contested a Test match 18 years ago. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Paras Sector 59 Gurgaon | Luxury Awaits at Paras Floret Paras The Florett Book Now Undo Over the past 15 years, they have played 16 One Day Internationals (ODIs), with India securing twelve victories, and thirteen T20 matches, of which India has won ten. A snapshot of Pakistan's win-loss record since the 2022 T20 World Cup. The International Cricket Council (ICC) marketed the India–Pakistan match as the premier clash at the T20 World Cup in the United States last year. In the tournament, Pakistan not only lost to India but also to the hosts and the minor team USA in the first round. On Tuesday, the West Indies achieved a comprehensive victory over Pakistan in the third ODI in Tarouba, bowling them out for a mere 92 runs, underscoring the team's ongoing struggles. Apart from home and away wins against Bangladesh earlier this year, the national team's ODI performances have been lacklustre over the past two years. These statistics resurface regularly. Considering that India and Pakistan could potentially meet three times in the Asia Cup – during the league stage, the Super Four, and potentially the final – one wonders if it will live up to its anticipated status. From an economic perspective, the India–England and India–Australia fixtures have seen exponential growth in recent years. For instance, the recent Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy, a five-Test series, recorded the highest-ever viewership numbers for digital broadcasts . Furthermore, the 2017 Border–Gavaskar series in India, followed by the 2024 leg in Australia, have become the highest-grossing bilateral cricket events to date. India will meet Pakistan on September 14 in the group stage of the Asia Cup 2025. For the India–Pakistan rivalry to achieve similar financial success, the quality of cricket between the two nations would need a significant improvement. The primary benefits of India participating in the Asia Cup are twofold: firstly, assured financial gains for cricket boards across the subcontinent through media rights revenue; secondly, fostering goodwill ahead of discussions when India hosts the 2026 T20 World Cup. With media rights revenues valued at approximately Rs 1,400 crore for three tournaments (plus approximately Rs 290 crore from ground rights), each cricket board is guaranteed a minimum of Rs 290 to 332 crore over six years – an outcome unattainable without India's involvement. In the context of the T20 World Cup, media rights revenues are several times higher than those of the Asia Cup. Ultimately, it is the financial stakes of the India–Pakistan match that remain high, while on-field competitiveness has diminished to a mere myth.
