New Raiders DT Thomas Booker is already getting 1st-team reps

USA Today13 hours ago
The Las Vegas Raiders recently acquired defensive tackle Thomas Booker in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles that sent Jakorian Bennett the other way. Booker made his Raiders debut in Thursday's 23-23 preseason Week 1 tie with the Seattle Seahawks. The fourth-year interior defender enjoyed an impressive debut.
Booker played a total of 11 snaps. The coaching staff was impressed with his participation in limited action. Head coach Pete Carroll rewarded Booker for his showing by giving him first-team reps with the defense on Saturday. It's worth noting starting defensive tackle Adam Butler did not practice, according to ESPN's Ryan McFadden.
Butler and Jonah Laulu have been working as the starters at defensive tackle in base defense. Laulu struggled versus the Seahawks' first-team offensive line on Thursday, earning an overall grade of 28.7 from Pro Football Focus.
For now, Laulu remains the expected starter. But seeing Booker get first-team reps at practice while Butler was sidelined strongly indicates the new acquisition might be the first option off the bench. That puts Booker ahead of the likes of Keondre Coburn and Leki Fotu on the depth chart.
Booker is already gaining influence with Carroll and the coaching staff. If Laulu doesn't start performing more admirably, we could see Booker replace him as the first-choice partner next to Butler.

Nevada court apparently clears way for former Raiders coach Jon Gruden to sue NFL over emails

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Nevada court apparently cleared the way Monday for a 2021 lawsuit filed by former Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden to proceed against the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell, alleging that a 'malicious and orchestrated campaign' was used to destroy Gruden's career by leaking old emails he had sent that included racist, misogynistic and homophobic comments. In 2022, the NFL appealed to Nevada's high court after a judge in Las Vegas rejected league bids to dismiss Gruden's claim outright or to order out-of-court talks through an arbitration process that could be overseen by Goodell. The Nevada Supreme Court, in a 5-2 ruling, said that 'the arbitration clause in the NFL Constitution is unconscionable and does not apply to Gruden as a former employee.' Gruden's lawsuit alleged that Goodell and the league pressured the Raiders to fire Gruden by leaking emails containing racist, sexist and homophobic comments that Gruden sent, when he was an on-air analyst at ESPN from 2011 to 2018. Gruden resigned from the Raiders in October 2021 and sued the league a month later. The NFL declined to comment on the ruling. Gruden's attorney did not return a phone message seeking comment. Gruden was Raiders head coach when the team moved in 2020 to Las Vegas from Oakland, California. He's seeking monetary damages, alleging that selective disclosure of the emails and their publication by the Wall Street Journal and New York Times ruined his career and endorsement contracts. Gruden coached the Raiders in Oakland from 1998 to 2001, then led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for seven years, winning a Super Bowl title in 2003. He spent several years as a TV analyst for ESPN before being hired by the Raiders again in 2018. He later consulted for the New Orleans Saints in 2023. He is now a part-owner and consultant for the Nashville Kats, a team in the Arena Football One league. The Associated Press

On Sunday, it was reported that Jalen Mills will be joining the Texans. He was the 233rd overall selection in the seventh round of the 2016 NFL Draft. The Eagles quickly figured out that Mills could contribute at the cornerback position. Although Mills started just two games as a rookie with the Eagles, he played in all 16 games. As a rookie, Mills combined 62 tackles and had seven pass deflections. MoreBased on what he put on display during his rookie effort, Mills became a full-time starter during the 2017 NFL season. Mills appeared in 15 games and showed plenty of positive progress compared to his rookie effort. The young veteran racked up 64 tackles, one of which was for a loss. He also had 14 pass deflections, along with three interceptions. Both remain his career-highs at this stage of his career. In 2017, Mills was a starter for the Eagles' Super Bowl-winning squad. In three playoff games, he accounted for 13 tackles and five pass deflections. After the first five years of his career, Mills moved on from the Eagles. He signed a four-year deal with the New England Patriots ahead of the 2022 NFL season. The veteran defensive back played in New England for three years. During his final season, he started in just half of the matchups he played. Last year, Mills anticipated a run with the New York Giants, but he was released in August. Last September, the former Eagle signed with the New York Jets' practice squad and was promoted to the active roster one month later. With the Jets, Mills produced 44 tackles, six pass deflections, and one interception. He suffered an injury in December, which ended his season prematurely. Just a few months after the Eagles cut ties with CJ Gardner-Johnson by sending him to the Texans, the star safety went down with a knee injury in practice last week. Initially, reports weren't optimistic, but Gardner-Johnson is expected to be back on the field at some point this year. For the time being, Mills will get a chance to carve out a role for himself.
