
One fix for ailing movie theaters? Becoming nonprofits.
Wilson wasn't the only one who felt this way, and after a community-wide campaign the Triplex reopened in November 2023 in a much different form. No longer is it dependent on ticket and popcorn sales. The Triplex has become a nonprofit organization relying on donations, grants and plenty of volunteer labor. And instead of leaning on the next Hollywood blockbuster, the Triplex focuses on what the community wants to see.

'In an independent theater, you can show what you want,' said Gail Lansky, vice president of the Triplex's board. 'You can show retrospectives. You can show foreign films. You can do film festivals. Free Saturdays for kids.'
Certainly not all nonprofit theaters are doing well, but the model has worked, at least so far, in places like the Berkshires, where a devoted and well-heeled clientele is willing and able to support the arts. Two nearby nonprofit movie theaters in New York, the Moviehouse in Millerton and the Crandell Theater in Chatham, have attracted sizable fan bases. Across the country, more than 250 movie theaters are nonprofits, said Bryan Braunlich, executive director of the Cinema Foundation, a movie-industry group that provides research for cinemas.
'We are definitely seeing a trend of communities rallying around their local theaters,' he said.
And movie theaters have needed saving. Since 2019, the number of screens operating in the United States has declined 12 percent, to 36,369 as of 2023, said David Hancock, chief analyst in media and entertainment at the research firm Omdia. The popularity of at-home streaming over the past decade was a factor. Before the pandemic, audience numbers were already waning, but COVID-19 nearly dealt the industry a death blow, as consumers got used to staying home and became pickier about what movies they went to a theater to see.

'People certainly came back, but much more slowly,' said the Triplex's former owner, Richard Stanley. 'Ultimately, I saw the handwriting on the wall and decided I had to close.'
When a theater shuts down in town, it's not just a problem for film buffs. Because of their unique architecture, with sloped floors and few windows, they are hard to convert to other purposes and often leave prominent spaces empty.
Becoming a nonprofit allows theaters to draw on different revenue sources, like film festivals, and the hope is that a theater catering to the people of a town will build a loyal and supportive base.
This doesn't happen overnight. That was the case with the Belcourt Theater in Nashville, Tennessee. A community group had raised millions of dollars to operate and renovate the 1925 movie palace, which briefly served as the main stage of the Grand Ole Opry.
'All of us who work in the theater remember the days when we'd show 'Badlands' to four people, and now we show 'Badlands' to 150 to 200 people,' said the Belcourt's executive director, Stephanie Silverman, referring to director Terrence Malick's debut feature from 1973.
Those who rallied around the Triplex are hoping for the same. When the Triplex theater opened in 1995 on the site of a burned-down lumberyard, nearby shopping centers had sucked the life out of Main Street and Great Barrington was struggling economically, said Stanley, Triplex's former owner.
Main Street is a very different place today, largely because of an influx of tourists and weekenders, and the Triplex 'was a very pivotal, really core thing that brought people to town,' said Betsy Andrus, executive director of the Southern Berkshire Chamber of Commerce.

By 2023, two other multiplexes in the Berkshires, in Lanesborough and North Adams, had already shut down. But Wilson believed there was hope for the Triplex. She called Stanley to ask if there was some way to reopen the theater.
'I asked what we could do, and he said, 'Well, pay me $1 million and you can buy the theater,'' she said.

Wilson didn't have $1 million to spare, but she did have plenty of friends. In April 2023, she invited her neighbors to her living room to discuss saving the theater. The group, which called itself Save the Triplex, created a GoFundMe page and a website to raise money. The response was overwhelming, said Hannah Wilken, who had spent many weekends at the Triplex with her friends as a teenager and was involved with the fundraising.
Even people who hadn't been to the theater since before COVID felt a visceral connection to the place. 'We just started getting inundated with people saying: 'I want to help. I want to donate. Sign me up,'' Wilken said.
Actress Karen Allen, who owns a fiber-arts store in town, turned over memorabilia from 'Raiders of the Lost Ark,' which she starred in, for an auction. A major boost came when photographer Gregory Crewdson donated $225,000, after selling copies of a signed limited edition of his work.
Within a few months, the group had raised $246,000 — enough to pay the first year's mortgage. Stanley liked the idea of keeping the Triplex alive as a nonprofit run by the town's residents and gave Wilson's group a five-year mortgage to buy the theater.

The campaign has benefited from the large and devoted Berkshires arts community, which regularly draws celebrities to town. Bill Murray showed up at the Triplex to discuss 'The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou,' the Wes Anderson film in which Murray played the title character, and Joan Baez was there for a showing of a documentary on her life. Arlo Guthrie discussed the 1969 movie 'Alice's Restaurant,' which had been filmed nearby. Not all the events have made money, but enough have done well to keep the Triplex going.
Movie theaters remain a dicey business, and for the Triplex to survive long term it will need a lot more money. The four screening rooms need major renovations. And although an active board oversees the theater's operations, it had just two paid employees until this month. (A third manager starts later this month, and the theater also pays the people who sell tickets and popcorn.) Wilson, the board's president, hopes to hire more people, but for now the theater still depends largely on volunteers.
'The challenges are real,' said Lansky, the board's vice president. 'Everybody knows that an independent theater cannot rely on tickets and concessions alone.'
Nonprofit theaters also tend to be a low priority for film distributors, Hancock of Omdia said. That means they can't always show the latest Hollywood blockbuster and must find other ways to keep up audience enthusiasm and a continuing commitment from the community members to donate money and volunteer their time, he said.
'The model can work, but only if the cinema is valued by the local community,' Hancock added.
Still, those behind the Triplex's revival believe an audience is out there. Sitting at home and watching movies on Netflix just isn't the same thing, said Ben Elliott, a manager at the theater and one of its few paid staff members.

Elliott grew up in Great Barrington and regularly visited the Triplex as a child. One of the things he missed during COVID was the sound of conversations in the lobby after a movie ended.
'Being together in a physical space is something that's becoming rarer and rarer, and holding on to that, I think, is important for communities across the country,' he said. 'It's also, for us, the most viable way to keep a theater open.'

Robert Wilson, visionary playwright, director and visual artist, dies at 83
Robert Wilson, a leader in avant-garde theater who collaborated with Philip Glass, David Byrne and Lady Gaga over his six-decade career, has died. He was 83. The 'Einstein on the Beach' director died Thursday at his home in Water Mill, N.Y., after a 'brief but acute illness,' according to his website. 'While facing his diagnosis with clear eyes and determination, he still felt compelled to keep working and creating right up until the very end,' the statement reads. 'His works for the stage, on paper, sculptures and video portraits, as well as the Watermill Center, will endure as Robert Wilson's artistic legacy.' Wilson was born on Oct. 4, 1941, in Waco, Texas, to a conservative Southern Baptist family. He struggled with a speech impediment and learning disabilities as a child but was aided by his ballet teacher, Byrd Hoffman. 'She heard me stutter, and she told me, 'You should take more time to speak. You should speak slowly,' ' he told the Observer in 2015. 'She said one word over a long period of time. She said go home and try it. I did. Within six weeks, I had overcome the stuttering.' In 1968, Wilson opened an experimental theater workshop named after his mentor: the Byrd Hoffman School of Byrds. He created the Byrd Hoffman Water Mill Foundation in 1969, under which he established the Watermill Center in 1992. In his early 20s, Wilson moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., where he studied interior design and architecture at the Pratt Institute. Later, he joined the recreation department of Goldwater Memorial Hospital, where he brought dance to catatonic polio patients with iron lungs. 'Because the patients were largely paralyzed, the work he was doing with them was more mental than physical,' wrote his former colleague Robyn Brentano in Frieze. 'With his unconventional frankness and tenderness, he drew out people's hidden qualities.' Wilson started teaching movement classes in Summit, N.J., while he wrote his early plays. One day in 1968, he witnessed a white police officer about to strike a deaf, mute Black boy, Raymond Andrews, while walking down the street. Wilson came to Andrews' defense, appeared in court on his behalf and eventually adopted him. Together, Andrews and Wilson created 'Deafman Glance,' a seven-hour 'silent opera,' which premiered in 1970 in Iowa City, Iowa. 'The world of a deaf child opened up to us like a wordless mouth. For more than four hours, we went to inhabit this universe where, in the absence of words, of sounds, 60 people had no words except to move,' wrote French Surrealist Louis Aragon after the 1971 Paris premiere. 'I never saw anything more beautiful in the world since I was born. Never, never has any play come anywhere near this one, because it is at once life awake and the life of closed eyes, the confusion between everyday life and the life of each night, reality mingles with dream, all that's inexplicable in the life of deaf man.' In 1973, Glass attended a showing of Wilson's 'The Life and Times of Joseph Stalin,' which ran for 12 hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The two artists, united by their interest in experimenting with time and space in theater, soon teamed up to create 'Einstein on the Beach,' which premiered in 1976 in Avignon, France. 'We worked first with the time — four hours — and how we were going to divide it up,' Glass told the Guardian in 2012. 'I discovered that Bob thinks with a pencil and paper; everything emerged as drawings. I composed music to these, and then Bob began staging it.' Wilson and Glass partnered again to create 'the CIVIL warS: a tree is best measured when it is down,' which also featured music from Talking Heads frontman Byrne, for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The project, meant to span 12 hours, was ultimately never completed due to funding problems. In 1995, Wilson shared his concerns about arts funding in the U.S. with The Times. 'The government should assume leadership,' Wilson told Times contributor Jan Breslauer. 'By giving the leadership to the private sector in a capitalistic society, we're going to measure the value of art by how many products we can sell. We need to have a cultural policy [instead]. There has to be a balance between government and the private sector. 'One of the few things that will remain of this time is what artists are doing,' Wilson says. 'They are the journal and the diary of our time.' In addition to his stage work, Wilson created drawings, sculptures, furniture and installations, which he showed at the Paula Cooper Gallery in New York beginning in 1975. In 2004, Wilson produced a series of video portraits featuring Brad Pitt, Winona Ryder, Renée Fleming and Alan Cumming. He would return to the medium again in 2013 with Lady Gaga as his subject. One of Wilson's last projects was an installation commissioned by Salone del Mobile in April 2025. Centering on Michelangelo's Rondanini Pietà at Milan's Castello Sforzesco, the project explored the Virgin Mary's pain following Christ's death with a combination of music, light and sculpture. 'I'm creating my own vision of the artist's unfinished masterpiece, torn between a feeling of reverential awe and profound admiration,' he told Wallpaper. An ambitious community play travels along the Grand River this month
'This sounds weird, but I wonder if we can do a 310-kilometre-long play,' theatre-maker Peter Smith thought out loud. He had just spent several months during COVID hearing stories from Indigenous people, scientists and students, artists and storytellers of all kinds for a Grand River histories project with Regional Tourism Organization 4 (RTO4). 'And people looked at me and said, 'Well, have you done that before? … How do you know it'll work?'' Smith told The Spectator. The truth is, he didn't know it would work. In his 45 years in theatre, Smith had never tackled a project quite this ambitious — although he had created two other community plays, stories 'of the place told by the people of the place.' When he suggested it, he didn't quite know what 'The Voice of the River' would look like, but that's where community members from places like Caledonia, Cambridge, Glen Morris, Paris and Ohsweken came in. Collaboration between the Canadian Centre for Rural Creativity, Grandview Theatre Company and countless groups and individuals — 500 'may be an underestimate,' Smith said — informed the event that is touching down in 12 communities along the Grand River over the course of a month. 'I don't think I'll ever be able to … thank all the people that have contributed to this event … there's a lot of appreciation for all that they have done,' he told The Spectator. The people the company 'gathered along the way' in the three-year process have brought their own imaginations and energy to the project, guiding it as much as river has, Smith said. There's a core company of six or eight performers, who will be joined by members of each community along the watershed the play stops in — such as the bagpiper, canoeist and choir in Glen Morris on Aug. 10. The Prairie Grasses: Austin Silversmith, Brett Miller, Aysen Lickers, Neo Moore. The play opened in Caledonia on July 21 and has made its way to Elora and Dundalk so far. Each performance kicks off with a parade at 6 p.m. featuring puppets and banners made by the different communities, which are 'jazzy and snazzy and colourful and peculiar and unique,' Smith said. Another feature is a quilt, each square designed by a different person, telling their story of the river. 'I think if there's a legacy for this, it's bringing people and their stories together,' Smith said. He describes the experience as a picnic, parade and story presentation — and no two places will be the same. 'So if folks want to come to all of the presentations, they're certainly welcome,' he said. It's 'BYOP' — bring your own picnic and lawn chair — open to all ages and people are encouraged to join the parade. There's no charge, but people are welcome to make a contribution. 'We're all volunteers. We've been working on this for three years now, and it's been the ride of a lifetime,' he said. The latest venture from French Laundry chef Thomas Keller? Burgers
Chef Thomas Keller's Wine Country empire is expanding — at least temporarily. On Saturday, Keller will open a nostalgia-themed popup restaurant in Napa Valley called Burgers & Half Bottles, serving classic Americana dishes like Wagyu burgers, Maine lobster rolls, fried chicken sandwiches and crinkle-cut fries. Located in Keller's former Mexican spot La Calenda (6518 Washington St., Yountville), which closed last November, the popup will run through October, according to a press release. Burgers & Half Bottles isn't a new concept. Keller, who is most known for his three-Michelin-starred restaurant the French Laundry, launched the popup in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic; the six-week endeavor operated inside Ad Hoc during the three nights the restaurant was closed. At the time, Keller wrote in an Instagram post that it was intended to 'bring more of our staff back to work during this pandemic and offer the community a fun midweek value.' Open Wednesday through Sunday, Burgers & Half Bottles also offers dessert, including milkshakes and an ice cream sandwich made with Bouchon Bakery's TKO cookie, Keller's interpretation of an Oreo. For drinks, a vintage 1965 Volkswagen 'Brew Bus' will pour beers, like Russian River Brewing's Pliny the Elder, according to the press release. The restaurant will also offer a selection of half and full bottles of wine from local producers, and Lost Coast Brewery Root Beer as a non-alcoholic option.
