Analysts said the United States would need to look at ways to balance immediate operational needs in the Middle East with long-term strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific, as fluctuating and prolonged conflicts make increased demands on American military resources.
According to US and other media reports, the nuclear-powered USS Nimitz halted operations in the
South China Sea on Monday to sail to the Middle East to support the USS Carl Vinson carrier strike group.
The carrier cancelled plans to dock in Vietnam this week, Reuters reported on Monday citing sources, one of whom said the US embassy in Hanoi had mentioned 'an emergent operational requirement'.

JPMorgan, UBS are positive on Hutchison as ports sale assurance eases investors' concern
Financial analysts said they were positive on the outlook for CK Hutchison Holdings after the conglomerate said its controversial ports deal, including two Panama Canal ports, was on track even though it may take longer than expected. US lender JPMorgan said CK Hutchison eased investor concerns after group co-managing director Frank Sixt gave an update on the port sale in a first-half results briefing on Thursday. 'Management sounded hopeful that the global ports disposal deal would proceed' although completion may only happen in 2026 at the earliest, said JPMorgan analysts Karl Chan, Venus Choi and Jocelyn Gao in a research note on Friday. 'This should ease investors' biggest concern,' they wrote. 'With or without the ports disposal, we see solid fundamentals as CK Hutchison managed to drive growth in all its key business segments.' Sixt said there was 'a reasonable chance discussions will lead to a deal that is good for all parties – ourselves included – and most importantly be approved by all relevant authorities'. The move, which was criticised by pro-Beijing analysts, came after US President Donald Trump vowed to 'take back' the Panama Canal from what he called 'Chinese influence'.

RFK Jnr disavows US presidential run, pledges loyalty to Trump
US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jnr said he is not running for president in 2028 in a social media post on Friday, pushing back on criticism from right-wing commentator Laura Loomer that he is disloyal to President Donald Trump. Advertisement 'The president has made himself the answer to my 20-year prayer that God would put me in a position to end the chronic disease epidemic,' Kennedy wrote. 'That's exactly what my team and I will do until the day he leaves office.' The declaration follows speculation, stoked by Loomer, that Kennedy, 71, has his sights set on the White House. Kennedy also defended one of his top aides, Stefanie Spear, from Loomer's attacks on her loyalty to the president. Last month, Spear joined a grass-roots organising call affiliated with a non-profit organisation that works to promote Kennedy's health policies. That group, MAHA Action, is led by Kennedy's book publisher, who also helped raise money through a super PAC for Kennedy's failed 2024 presidential bid. Loomer, a conservative political activist who has outsize influence in Trump's orbit, suggested Spear's presence on the organising call was evidence Kennedy was planning another campaign. How China could shape future of the Middle East
Ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, including the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza , have exposed the fragility of the US-led international order and Western double standards like never before. It's hard to understate the gravity of the situation, underscoring the need for urgent international intervention. Multiple Israeli scholars, human rights organisations and political leaders are publicly warning of unprecedented atrocities. Even former Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert, a past member of the incumbent Likud party, has warned of war crimes and 'the transformation of Gaza into a humanitarian disaster area'. Amid the starvation of Palestinians, experts are raising the alarm about the deaths of tens of thousands of civilians. Yet the United States and key European powers still firmly back Israel, insisting on its 'self-defence' following the horrific October 7 attacks . Meanwhile, there is deepening fear of a renewed and more devastating military confrontation between Israel and Iran, which would have dire consequences for regional security and the world's energy supply. In short, the world is desperately seeking alternative leadership to uphold a rules-based international order. By and large, China has not involved itself in any of the Middle East conflicts. Rather, Beijing has condemned the actions of Western governments while expressing support for diplomacy. But given its immense network of influence, due to burgeoning trade and defence ties with key nations across the Middle East and beyond, China is in a unique position to leverage its global clout to push for a more constructive solution that prevents major wars and mitigates human suffering. As the world's second-largest economic and military power, as well as the top trading partner of many countries, China is in a prime position to play a vital role in global politics. Despite touting a rules-based international order, the West has started or failed to prevent multiple simultaneous conflicts in the Middle East.
