As 2 E-W stretches unite, engineers tunnel through Bowbazar challenges
1 2 Kolkata: The East-West Metro has endured numerous setbacks, but the gravest challenge for engineers surrounded a 1-km radius in Bowbazar's bylanes with the epicentre at Durga Pituri Lane that witnessed three incidents of subsidence. The latest subsidence was on Sept 5, 2024 when 50 residents were displaced from six buildings. That incident was nothing compared to the first disaster on Aug 31, 2019, when TBM Chandi struck a sand aquifer, triggering a cave-in. Over 700 residents were rendered homeless as buildings collapsed or developed cracks. The tally of affected buildings now stands around 100. Of the over 800 displaced individuals, around 400 continue living in flats leased by project ITD-ITD Cementation. Soil reinforcement was carried out for months," recalled an engineer. Even after the east-bound tunnel became functional, work continued on the west-bound tunnel. With TBM Chandi lost in the tunnel disaster, hen tunnelling recommenced in Feb 2020, it was the other TBM Urvi that was used to tunnel to Sealdah and then reverse towards DP Lane after retrieving the scrapped Chandi through a shaft. The tunnelling was completed in May 2021. When things appeared to be looking up, two more subsidence incidents happened on May 11 and Oct 14, 2022. This forced KMRC to drop the three proposed cross passages in the cave-in zone and replace them with a passenger evacuation shaft at Durga Pituri Lane.
