Delhi's Patiala House Court on Thursday allowed 26/11 Mumbai attack accused Tahawwur Hussain Rana to speak to family members.
Authorities of Tihar jail in New Delhi, where Rana is lodged, had earlier opposed his plea over security concerns.
Rana told the court that he needs to consult his family before deciding whether to change his legal aid counsel, and requested a one-time phone call for that purpose.
This was not the first time Rana had sought permission to speak with his family. An earlier similar plea had been accepted, allowing him to make a one-time phone call.
Who Is Tahawwur Rana?
Rana, a Pakistani-Canadian national and a close associate of 26/11 conspirator David Coleman Headley alias Dawood Gilani, was extradited to India earlier this year after the US Supreme Court rejected his review petition on April 4.
Rana's involvement in the 2008 Mumbai attacks places him among the most high-profile accused.
On November 26, 2008, a group of 10 Pakistani terrorists went on a rampage, carrying out attacks on a railway station, two luxury hotels, and a Jewish centre, sneaking into India's financial capital through the sea route.
A total of 166 people were killed in the assault that lasted for nearly 60 hours.

Man gets 20-yr jail term for raping step-daughter

Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 7 (PTI) A Delhi court has sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping his teen stepdaughter, observing there was no straitjacket formula for sentencing. The court said the 'twin objectives" of deterrence of crimes and reformation of a convict needed to be balanced. Additional sessions judge Ankit Mehta was hearing the arguments on the quantum of sentencing against the 32-year-old man, convicted for rape under IPC and Section 6 (aggravated penetrative assault) of the POCSO Act. On August 2, the court said, 'Accused inserted his finger in the private parts of the victim, amounting to rape or penetrative sexual assault. It was further proved that the convict had watched the victim while she was taking a bath and had also lain down upon her." The sentencing, the court said, had to be commensurate with the relevant factors, including nature and gravity of the offence, how the crime was committed, the condition of the victim, the convict's age and whether the convict was a habitual offender. 'There is no straitjacket formula for the same, and as such, both the aggravating and mitigating factors need to be considered. Further, sentencing needs to balance the twin objectives of deterrence and reform of the convict," the verdict said. The court awarded Rs 10.5 lakh compensation to the minor survivor. 108 prisoners in Punjab granted early release for good conduct

Agency: PTI Chandigarh, Aug 7 (PTI) The Punjab government on Thursday said it has granted early release of 108 prisoners, serving life sentences, who demonstrated exemplary conduct during their incarceration. This measure has been undertaken with the objective of providing rehabilitation opportunities to inmates with good conduct, Punjab Jail Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar said in a statement. He stressed that this decision shows the state government's efforts to provide a second chance to individuals who exhibited good behaviour and met the requisite criteria for early release. This step is part of the Punjab government's comprehensive strategy to ensure that the justice system not only punishes but also facilitates the reestablishment and reintegration of individuals into society, Bhullar said. The minister added that by releasing these prisoners, the state government aims to promote a more humane and effective approach to justice. The Cabinet minister further said that around 800 calling systems have been installed in jails to facilitate communication between prisoners and their families and lawyers, thereby preventing them from attempting to use illegal mobile phones. Prisoners are also provided with free calling services, allowing them 10 minutes of calls every 15 days to communicate with their families and lawyers, Bhullar added. NIA arrests two men for involvement in trafficking youth to US via dunki route

Agency: PTI New Delhi, Aug 7 (PTI) The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday arrested two accused for involvement in trafficking of youth to the US via the infamous dunki route. The term dunki, believed to have originated from the word donkey, refers to an illegal pathway that immigrants take to enter countries like the United States without proper documentation. The accused, Ravi Kumar and Gopal Singh, were taken into custody during extensive searches at four locations in Haryana and Punjab, a statement issued by the NIA said. While two locations were searched in Haryana's Karnal district, NIA teams converged on one location each in Yamuna Nagar (Haryana) and Gurdaspur (Punjab) Thursday morning. The digital devices and other material seized during the searches is being examined for further evidence about the criminal conspiracy linked to the immigration racket, the probe agency said. NIA investigations revealed that Ravi and Gopal, both hailing from Karnal district, were part of a transnational syndicate that lured Indian citizens with false promises of legal travel to the US. 'Gopal had conspired with Jai Kumar, another key accused, and Ravi in the illegal immigration of several victims. He not only managed hotel bookings and the travel itineraries of the victims but also acted as an agent for other co-victims," the statement said. He assisted other accused in collecting payments from the victims and their families, according to the NIA findings so far. The case relates to the illegal immigration to the US of Shubham Saini, a resident of Naraingarh, Haryana. In January, he was apprehended by US authorities at the border and deported to India. In his complaint to Naraingarh police, Saini had revealed that he was taken to the US through South and Central American countries. He was held in captivity abroad, and subjected to abuse and extortion at multiple stages, the NIA said, adding that a total of Rs 42 lakhs was paid in parts by him and his family to the syndicate. The NIA is continuing with its investigation in the case, which has major international linkages, to identify and arrest others involved in the conspiracy, it added.
