Dog left with one eye after brutal beating in Diepsloot
A friendly township dog named Danger is lucky to be alive after being brutally attacked by a group of alleged gangsters in Diepsloot, leaving him with severe injuries, fighting for his life.
Known in his community for his gentle and protective nature, Danger was left defenceless in the face of the violent assault, which has shocked residents and animal lovers alike.
Northcliff Melville Times reports that a desperate call from his distraught owner was received by Fourways-based animal rescue organisation 4Paws.
The team rushed to the scene without delay, only to be met with a heartbreaking sight.
'We found the dog severely battered and broken, and immediately took him to our vet,' said Merinda Brits from 4Paws. 'Danger had been beaten on the left side of his face, causing serious trauma to his eye. He also had cuts and bruises around the area.'
Veterinarians worked quickly to stabilise him, but the damage was irreversible. Danger's eye was so badly injured it had to be surgically removed.
Despite the brutal attack and permanent injury, Danger's resilience has stunned his rescuers.
'He's doing quite well and is adapting to life with just one eye,' said Brits.
His owner, overwhelmed with relief and gratitude, has promised Brits to take extra measures to keep his beloved dog safe going forward.
'He was very happy to have Danger back home and told us he will now get locks for his gate,' Brits added.
Danger's case has highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by animals in vulnerable communities and the urgent need for public support.
4Paws is now appealing for donations to help cover Danger's veterinary costs and continued care.
'We'll continue taking Danger to our vet for follow-ups,' said Brits. 'All the owner needs to do is love him and care for him.'
Founded in 2006, 4Paws has rescued countless animals in need.

Kameeldrift murders: No arrests after brutal home invasions
It has been days since two brutal murders shook the Kameeldrift community in Gauteng — yet police have made no arrests. Pretoria Rekord reports that in two separate incidents just days apart, a father of three was gunned down during a home invasion, and another resident was shot and killed on his property. Despite growing pressure from residents and grieving families desperate for justice, both cases remain unsolved. In the early hours of last Monday, 46-year-old Jaco Strydom was shot and killed during a home invasion. According to his family, Strydom woke to the sound of intruders breaking in through a sliding door. In a desperate attempt to protect his wife and three sons, he grabbed a steel pipe and confronted the armed attackers. He was shot during the struggle and collapsed in his son's bedroom. He died a hero, just hours before his youngest child's sixth birthday. Only a few days before Strydom's murder, another man was attacked and killed during a robbery. On the evening of July 24, a violent home invasion in Buffelsdrift, within the Kameeldrift policing area, resulted in the death of Mossie Mostert. One of the attackers was seen on camera walking in his yard just before four suspects — dressed in blue overalls — stormed the property. Mostert's son rushed over and found the house had been ransacked. His 82-year-old father was discovered outside, severely assaulted and tied with wires. He was transported to a hospital in Montana but was pronounced dead on arrival. Only cash and a cellphone are believed to have been stolen. Despite the murders happening in close proximity and within days of each other, no arrests have been made. Swift response saves kidnapped family of 4 in Limpopo
Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe says the swift response from dedicated multi-disciplinary teams prevented potential harm to a kidnapped family of four, who were rescued in the early hours of yesterday morning. Polokwane Review reports that, according to the Limpopo police, a case of kidnapping was reported in Mareseleng village in the Burgersfort policing area after the family – a man, his wife and two minor children – were tied up and forced into their family vehicle. 'Preliminary investigations suggest three armed suspects, dressed in balaclavas, forcibly entered the victims' residence and found the family sleeping in the same bedroom. They threatened the victims, tied them up and kidnapped them, fleeing the scene in the victim's VW Polo hatchback,' provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says. Prompt response and collaboration with a car tracking company led to the rescue of the family at around 06:00 on a farm in the Modjadjiskloof policing area. They were unharmed. Hadebe commends the teams, adding that their swift response disrupted the kidnappers' plans. 'Police investigations continue and we urge anyone with relevant information to assist in apprehending the suspects. The public are advised to contact the investigating officer, Colonel Saleem Wahab, on 082 319 9291 or call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111. Alternatively, information can be provided via the MySAPS app or by visiting the nearest police station,' Ledwaba adds. Over 50 more suspected illegal miners emerge from Barberton's Sheba Mine
The illegal mining crisis in Barberton came under the spotlight again on Monday and yesterday, when more suspects were arrested after emerging from the depths of Sheba Mine in Barberton, Mpumalanga. This brings the total number of illegal miners who have surfaced to 550, says Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli. He explains that, on Friday, 496 people came to the surface (the number was revised as per their court appearance on Monday). On Monday, 24 people came to the surface, and yesterday, 30 people came to the surface. Lowvelder reports that, according to Mdhluli, mine security and law enforcement continue to monitor the situation, but the full extent remains unclear. Mdhluli says it is difficult to determine how many people might still be underground. 'We'll keep monitoring. As we're not there physically, I can't confirm whether anyone remains underground. The lack of definitive information highlights the undercover nature of these operations and the challenges authorities face in tackling them,' he says. Meanwhile, the Barberton Magistrate's Court has granted bail of R2 000 each to 26 of the accused. The decision was based on several factors, including that they have no prior convictions, fixed addresses and no pending cases. They were strongly warned against reoffending while on bail. The state has indicated it will oppose bail for the remaining accused who have previous convictions or pending cases. These people have been remanded in custody. The matter has been postponed to August 11 and 12 to allow for address verification and possible further bail applications.
