Dance classes helping support people with Parkinson's

People living with Parkinson's are using dance skills to support their co-ordination and muscle strength.A student-led clinic at the University of Leicester has hosted a dance class, run by Virtual Motion Dance, which works with people living with the condition.It is hoped the activity will help improve muscle strength and balance."The exercises support us as I feel like I have achieved something - you can move on and feel more energised," said Ian Findley, 81, who has lived with the disorder for five years.
"I got shakes in my right hand when I was driving. People noticed, and we made an appointment," he added."If we're talking about it, then it can only help. You are socialising and sharing your experience with other people. It really does help."This is not going to drag us down. We will win in the end."Those who organise the classes have also performed in Leicestershire for the People Dancing National Programme 'Live Well & Dance Parkinson's', in affiliation with the English National Ballet.
Helen Winn-Smith, from Virtual Motion Dance, said the initiative is built in with an exercise programmed she has worked on with the physiotherapy team at University Hospitals of Leicester.She added: "The music is a key part of people living with Parkinson's. It can help with the walking and balance."The movement comes through and that helps the tone of the muscle."Not everyone has the same symptoms and we support people dealing with the changes."She said the group is not just about dancing but also members talking about their experiences, adding: "It's a real place where you can come together and make friends."Parkinson's UK estimates around 153,000 people across the UK are living with the condition, with most patients likely to be diagnosed over the age of 70."I didn't really have any problems while I was working but, after I retired, my symptoms have got worse," said Christine Gowdridge, a former computer technician, who was diagnosed with the condition in September 2007."I know that everyone has a similar problem. You can still get warm doing the seated routine."The old saying is if you don't use it, you will lose it. "If you're capable of doing it, and carry on doing it, then you will do just fine."

Nico Ogilvie-Hayes began his charity cycle on Friday, June 6, and is cycling across 10 islands in the Outer Hebrides to raise awareness about the life-changing disease. The local tree surgeon was inspired to take on the mammoth challenge after seeing the great care provided to his mum by the charity, Parkinson's UK. Speaking to the Evening News, Nico said: 'When my mum was diagnosed with Parkinson's a year ago, it was a difficult time for our family – and especially for my mum who had to get used to living with the disease. Parkinson's can become a lot worse immediately after being diagnosed for some, but less so for others. But the Parkinson's UK team assigned to my mum and neurologists at the hospital have given us peace of mind, answered every question we had and have just been amazing, so I really wanted to give something back.' Edinburgh tree surgeon, Nico Ogilvie-Hayes, hopes to raise as much money as possible on his 186-mile charity ride. The Edinburgh man will travel solo across the islands, travelling with his tent, cooker and necessary gear during his inspirational challenge. In the months leading up to his challenge, Nico has cycled vast distances after work, travelling between 25 and 35 miles in preparation for his charity cycle. He said: 'I've cycled in some charity rides in the past, but I'd still consider myself a novice. I did the Great Glen Way last year which is 66 miles over three days, but this is obviously a bit different and I'll probably be on the road for eight or nine days. 'I'm a tree surgeon which is a very physical job, and it's been hard to cycle long distances after work at times, but I've managed to get a few trial runs in to get back in the swing of things - but it's definitely going to be a challenge.' It has more than 40 symptoms, from tremor and pain to anxiety, and there is currently no cure. 'For example one of the symptoms of Parkinson's is what they call a mask face, where someone has a blank expression and is unable to smile or make an expression to acknowledge what another person is saying. This could be easily misunderstood by someone who didn't know much about the disease. Other symptoms can include fatigue or a change in movement or posture.' People could find themselves facing an uncomfortable sickness this summer if they're not careful As the weather heats up in summer, people may want to opt for something lighter for lunch, like a salad. But a fresh health alert from UK authorities warns that these foods could make people ill if one very important step is ignored. It may not always be possible to grab fresh food to whip up a refreshing and healthy salad, so many people instead reach for the premade packs available in most supermarkets. However, people who do this have been warned to take one extra step to avoid falling ill. ‌ It might seem like common sense, but some people simply tip their bag out and tuck it in. Experts suggest taking one extra precaution to avoid coming into contact with bacteria like E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria. ‌ In a post on X, a spokesperson for the UK Health Security Agency said: "Even if the packet says washed and ready to eat, it's worth giving it an extra rinse. Bacteria on one leaf can spread to the whole pack" Most of these supermarket salads have already undergone a washing and sanitising process before packaging. But, not every bag will be labelled to confirm that it has or hasn't been pre-washed - so it's best to make sure and give your pack a rinse before eating. A BBC report claimed that bagged salad may "fuel the growth of food-poisoning bugs". It quoted the research of scientists from the University of Leicester who said the moist environment, combined with nutrients leaching out of chopped leaves, created the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. The researchers said they were shocked at the way the bacteria thrived, even in the fridge. They advised people to eat bagged salad on the day they bought it. The report added that these studies showed that Salmonella did especially well in bags containing spinach, while E. coli loved rocket leaves. One of the scientists behind the research, Dr Primrose Freestone, advised the BBC: "Buy the bag with the best sell-by date, avoid lots of mushed leaves, and if it's inflated, then don't use it." ‌ Signs of sickness caused by salad are similar to any other food poisoning.
