Astronomers reveal a chilling countdown to the end of the universe
The universe may not expand forever
The traditional model of the universe's fate was built on the assumption that dark energy is constant and positive, a force pushing galaxies apart faster over time. But researchers analysing data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) found evidence that dark energy might not be constant after all. Instead, it could vary over time, as proposed by a new theoretical framework called the axion-dark energy (aDE) model.
One of the most striking findings in the new study is the possibility that the cosmological constant — which reflects the energy density of space itself — may be negative. If true, this would mean that gravity could eventually overpower expansion. Over time, this shift would cause the universe's growth to slow, stop, and then reverse into a contraction phase.

What is the Big Crunch
If contraction occurs, all matter and energy could eventually be compressed into a single, dense point — an event known as the
Big Crunch
. This would be the reverse of the
Big Bang
. According to the aDE model, the total lifespan of the universe would be about 33.3 billion years, and we are already 13.8 billion years into that span. That leaves approximately 20 billion years before the predicted collapse.
Not a final verdict yet
Although the findings are significant, scientists caution that this new model is not confirmed. It is based on observational trends and evolving theoretical physics. Further investigation using next-generation telescopes and deeper space surveys will be needed to determine whether dark energy truly changes over time and whether a cosmic collapse is on the horizon.
Is the end really the end
Even if the Big Crunch occurs, it might not mark the permanent end of everything. Some theories propose that a collapsing universe could eventually lead to a rebirth — a new Big Bang triggering a fresh universe cycle. While these ideas remain speculative, the study has opened a bold new chapter in understanding how — and when — our universe might end.

SGPGIMS gets state's first fully automated pathology laboratory
Lucknow: To cut down the time taken for diagnostic tests and improve report accuracy, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) on Sunday inaugurated Uttar Pradesh's first fully automated laboratory in its department of pathology (clinical chemistry section). The advanced system, developed by Beckman Coulter, can process over 4,000 tests per hour and automates every step—from sample preparation to sorting and final testing. Tasks that were earlier done manually and were prone to delays and human error are now streamlined by the system. "With this fully automated Beckman Coulter system, we can deliver results for routine tests like liver function, kidney function, thyroid and blood glucose much earlier—sometimes within an hour," said Prof Manoj Jain, head of the department of pathology. "The system handles everything from sample preparation to sorting and testing without manual intervention, ensuring faster and more reliable outcomes. This advancement significantly improves report turnaround time, enhances accuracy and helps clinicians make quicker treatment decisions." SGPGIMS now joins a select group of hospitals in the country with such advanced lab automation. The laboratory upgrade also aligns with the institute's goal of offering world-class healthcare and bringing cutting-edge diagnostic facilities to patients from across the state. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo "This upgrade is all about improving patient care. We want to make sure our patients get the right diagnosis at the right time," said Prof RK Dhiman, director, SGPGIMS. Dr Raghavendra, in charge of the lab, who led the transformation, added, "This isn't just a lab upgrade—it's a shift in how we practice modern medicine. Our lab is now faster, safer, and smarter—and our patients are the biggest winners." Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes , messages and quotes !

Traditional courses at RU in demand among students
1 2 Ranchi: History, political science and geography are the most sought-after courses among the students seeking admission in Ranchi University, while philosophy, psychology and sociology have a very few takers. Moreover, business administration, computer application, accountancy and zoology are also popular among those seeking admission in vocational courses. Academicians said that familiarity with the subject from school level, simplicity and also lack of awareness about other subjects are among the reasons why certain subjects are more popular. A case in point is Marwari College. There are 460 applications for geography against vacancy of 120. A total of 590 have applied for 165 seats in political science and around 1,000 for 250 accountancy seats. In Doranda college, there are around 700 applications for 250 seats in history, while in philosophy only 45 students have applied for 60 seats, 159 for 150 seats in sociology, 41 for 100 seats in physics and 43 against 60 seats in chemistry. The applicants in tribal and regional language department is also less than the seats of 66. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo However, demand for these languages is high in colleges located in certain areas. For instance, there are 700 applications against 250 seats for Panchpargania subject in Panchpargania Kisan College in Bundu. Principal in-charge of Doranda college, Rajkumar Sharma said that most of the students know about history and geography from school days, adding they are useful in competitive examinations as well. He added, "During the ongoing admission process, we are counselling students who cannot secure admission in their choice of subjects to opt for others." It may be stated here that admission on basis of second list are underway in the RU colleges. Around 65,000 students have applied for 40,000 seats in the university.
