Daily Briefing: ‘Minta Devi 124 not out'; US tariffs cast a shadow; India's batting success secret revealed

Good morning, Minta Devi, a first-time voter from Siwan district in Bihar, has her age listed as 124 years in the voters' list. Even though the district administration claimed the discrepancy was a clerical error during the online application process, it left the Opposition leaders with fresh ammunition to question the SIR process. On Tuesday, INDIA bloc MPs staged a protest in the Parliament complex wearing white T-shirts emblazoned with the slogan — 'Minta Devi 124 Not Out.' Meanwhile, two other similar cases involving two entries in the draft roll of the SIR where the voters were shown to be over the age of 119 have been verified as accurate. With that, let's move on to top stories from today's edition: 🚨 Big Story As Delhi is slapped with 50 per cent tariffs by the United States, preparations are underway for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to meet US President Donald Trump next month to iron out issues, arrive at a common ground on tariffs, and possibly announce a trade deal. This meeting will likely occur on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in the last week of September. However, for this to come to fruition, a lot of moving parts have to fall in place. Here's what all needs to be done. Trump's latest decision to raise tariffs on Indian goods — hiking duties on leather footwear from 5-8% to 25%, with a further 25% increase threatened by August 27 — has cast a shadow over a shoe manufacturing unit in Agra. According to a report in The Indian Express, exports to the US rose from $645 million in 2020-21 to $1,045 million in 2024-25 — a 62% jump. For manufacturers who had only recently begun gaining a foothold in the US market, the move has come as a significant setback. Echoing the concerns of these manufacturers, former RBI Governor Duvvuri Subbarao, in a conversation with us, said that high tariffs imposed by the US on labour-intensive exports such as textiles and gems will deepen the jobless growth problem since a 50 per cent tariff threatens exports worth around 2 per cent of GDP. He also warned that for India, 'being labelled a 'dead' economy by a US president carries reputational costs.' Read the full interview here. ⚡ Only in Express Bengaluru's Mahadevapura Assembly constituency, plunged into the limelight since Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged a 'theft' of votes by the BJP in 2024 general elections there, has witnessed explosive growth in the past two decades, transforming into the information technology capital of India. My colleague Johnson T A visited three addresses mentioned by Gandhi as holding 'bulk voters at a single address.' Each of the addresses corresponded with spaces where a large number of migrants love or work, with one of them being a PG, another having a row of rooms for rent, and the third holding a brewery and shopping plaza. Here's what our exclusive report reveals. 📰 From the Front Page The Election Commission is yet to respond to the charges of the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, of 'vote chori' in Mahadevapura Assembly segment. The claim has thrust a spotlight on a long-standing challenge for the poll body — the absence of standardised addresses for many voters, and the continued practice of assigning 'notional' house numbers. The problem of inconsistent or informal addresses goes beyond the drafting or revision of electoral rolls. Here's what lies behind the use of 'notional' house numbers. The Supreme Court has granted interim protection from arrest to Siddharth Varadarajan, journalist and editor of The Wire, in a case lodged by the Assam Police over an article on Operation Sindoor carried by the online portal. The case was lodged under Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) which deals with acts 'endangering sovereignty, unity and integrity of India.' The bench issued notice to the Centre on the plea by the Foundation for Independent Journalism, which runs the portal, challenging the constitutional validity of the provision. 📌 Must Read 'Hitting while it hurts': In the wake of Beijing's strong response to the US with retaliatory measures, Trump extended his trade truce with China for another three months until November 10, pausing the triple-digit import duties that the two countries would have levied on each other's goods. However, it isn't just the choking of the supply of critical minerals that China has used as a leveraging tool to bring Trump to the negotiating table. In its trade war with the US, China has also employed a 'trump card' in the form of agricultural imports. Harish Damodaran explains. ✍️ When Trump meets Putin: In our Opinion section today, C Raja Mohan delves deeper into Russian President Vladimir Putin's upcoming visit to the US, which stands as a significant moment in changing relations between US, Russia, Europe and China. Mohan writes: 'For India, reconciliation between Washington and Moscow is welcome. The Russia-West conflict has historically strengthened China and Pakistan, constraining India's regional policies. Delhi hoped Trump's pursuit of peace with Russia would align with its interests. But India has now become collateral damage in Trump's bid to pressure Moscow into a deal.' Before the Supreme Court's direction to all authorities in Delhi-NCR to relocate all stray dogs to dedicated dog shelters, the apex court-appointed amicus curiae underlined the fundamental right of a human being to move freely without the fear of a dog bite. 'The 2023 Rules somehow seems to suggest that the fundamental rights of stray dogs to roam around in the street(s), attack human beings and create public nuisance is at a higher pedestal than the fundamental rights of human beings,' the amicus report stated. ⏳ And Finally… 'Secret revealed': India scored a grand total of 3809 runs in the five-Test series against England by August, the second highest-ever aggregate runs in a series. This marked a significant jump from 2126 runs that India had managed to score for the same number of Tests against Australia by January. What's behind India's smooth batting transition in the post Virat Kohli-Rohit Sharma era? Could it be the introduction of a new batting approach? Sandeep Dwivedi writes: 'The small tweak is in the messaging. Unlike in the past, batsmen aren't told to constantly look for runs or forced to 'show intent' – the buzzword of the previous era.' 🎧 Lastly, don't forget to tune in to our latest episode of 3 Things podcast, where we discuss SC's recent order on relocating stray dogs; the National Sports Governance Act passed by both Houses this week; and BJP's fresh allegation of vote fraud on Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. That's all for today! Until next time, Ariba

Current trends in India's patenting landscape

In 2023, 3.55 million patent applications were filed worldwide. In India, 90,298 applications were recorded that year, marking an increase of 17.2% from 2022 and 25.2% from 2021. Over 50% of these applications originated from Indian residents, highlighting growing domestic innovation. Despite these year-on-year improvements, however, India continues to lag behind countries like China, the US, and Japan both in terms of absolute numbers, and applications filed and granted that are domestic in origin. This brief examines the patent-related challenges in India, administrative inefficiencies, weaknesses in the domestic innovation ecosystem, the current status of patent filing in the country, capacities in patent boosting and performance, and inconsistencies across state-level patent incentives. The brief proposes targeted reforms. Most students in the city are unaware of intellectual property rights (IPR) and did not file patents for their research work.(Photo used for representational purpose) Patents help drive innovation and economic growth. For India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi envisions a techade powered by the country's young innovators, with patent filings breaking records and startups thriving across tier-2 and tier-3 cities. The recent surge in patent registrations in India, up by 50% in five years, and a climb to the 39th position in the Global Innovation Index 2024 highlight India's progress and ambitions to lead globally in patents and innovation. At the time of writing, the Government of India was drafting a strategic blueprint to institutionalise IP financing, improve credit availability, and enable businesses to leverage IP to raise capital. With intangible assets accounting for 85% of the S&P 500 valuation, India is working to create a uniform IP valuation system and appointing IP evaluators to boost IP-backed financing, generate awareness, and alleviate risk aversion among financial institutions. India's aspirations also extend to achieving a tenth of global patents in sixth-generation mobile services through the Bharat 6G Alliance, building on its achievements as the world's second largest mobile phone producer and the one with the fastest 5G network rollout. These initiatives build on India's National IPR Policy, which prioritises knowledge-driven development, emphasising IP commercialisation, human resource development, and stronger IPR administration. This brief analyses the current status of patent filing in India and contrasts it with other countries. Individual Indian states' patent-boosting and performance are also discussed to contextualise India's position, capacity, and performance in patent filing and granting, and the targets it must aim to achieve.
