SWPL of 10 launched to realise full-time 'dream'

BBC News25-06-2025
Managing director Fiona McIntyre hopes this season's slimmed down Scottish Women's Premier League structure will go a long way to realising her "dream" of a totally full-time top flight.McIntyre believes it would be an "incredible achievement" if an all full-time division was achieved by 2035 - before a potential shared home nations World Cup."I think that's the dream scenario," McIntyre told BBC Scotland as fixtures for the 10-team league - two fewer than last season - were announced. It was only in recent years that Celtic, Heart of Midlothian, current champions Hibernian and Rangers created professional sides to challenge the dominance of the independent Glasgow City.
"Even if you look back three years, when we set the SWPL up, I don't think many would have comprehended that we'd be sitting with five full-time clubs already," McIntyre said."The absolute ambition is to have a full-time league, but it has to be a full-time sustainable league for our clubs and that's the challenge, because it costs significant money for clubs to go full-time."The slimmed down SWPL is designed to make fixtures more competitive each week.Teams will again play one another once home and away before the league split, but whereas last season, when it was two sections of six, this time it will be a top six and bottom four. While the top half play for the title and Champions League qualification for the remaining home and away games, the bottom four will battle to avoid relegation, with the bottom side relegated and the ninth-placed team taking part in a one-off play-off final against the promotion play-off winner from SWPL2.It means the top six will play 28 league fixtures and the bottom four will play 24 fixtures compared to 32 last term."The number of games we have, particularly in SWPL 1, is particularly high," McIntyre explained. "We have more games than any other league in Europe at the moment."Also, the competitiveness of our games is a challenge. Pre-split in SWPL 1, the data shows us probably what we've all seen anecdotally, which is we don't have as competitive fixtures as we would like."The upside is that, post-split, we have the most competitive league in Europe, so it's trying to marry all of those things together."The new format also takes into consideration changes to world governing body Fifa's international calendar - and data designed to compare alternative league sizes."From 2026, some of the international windows will run over consecutive weekends, so we lose weekend dates to our calendar," McIntyre pointed out."We essentially ran some algorithms to work out, if we stayed at 12, what difference does that would make if we change the format. If we go to 10, if we go to eight, how does that affect that goal differential in terms of competitiveness - and what we landed on was 10."That was the optimum that allowed us to deliver more competitively but also retaining a significant number of games whilst reducing it down enough that it allows us to account for the changes that are coming to the calendar."McIntyre points out that a smaller bottom half of the SWPL will reduce the number of meaningless games at the end of the season, while there will be increased competition at the top of SWPL2, with sides finishing second, third and fourth involved in promotion play-offs.

Lennon Miller set for £4.75million move to Udinese... and become the latest Scot to light up Serie A

Motherwell are set to smash their record for an outgoing transfer as Lennon Miller prepares to sign for Udinese for £4.75million. The Scotland international has flown to Italy to undergo a medical after his club came to an agreement with the Serie A side. The deal for the midfielder, who turns 19 in two weeks, is poised to exceed the £2.75m Motherwell coined in from Celtic for David Turnbull back in 2020. Miller's father, the former Aberdeen striker Lee, had recently made it clear that his son had his heart set on moving abroad. While Torino are thought to have made enquiries, Udinese, managed by German Kosta Runjaic, were the only club to match the Steelmen's asking price. Miller hasn't played for Motherwell this season, with his club previously insisting he was carrying an injury. But manager Jens Berthel Askou admitted on Saturday that the player had been left out of their goalless draw with St Mirren because of the ongoing transfer situation. Lennon Miller made 76 appearances for Motherwell, recording five goals and 11 assists The 18-year-old hasn't played for the Steelmen this season as talks over his future continued Gilmour will join McTominay and Gilmour, who enjoyed title glory at Napoli last season, in Italy 'It was a final call with everything taken into consideration,' Askou said. 'It's not a secret that there are things going on in the background. We know he's been out for four weeks. 'How much risk are you willing to take on a player like him in that situation? The decision was that we kept him out of it.' Miller made 76 senior appearances for the club and helped them finish eighth in the table last season after earning the captaincy. That led to him winning full international caps against Iceland and Liechtenstein at the end of the season. Provided there are no last-minute hitches, Miller will join the ever-growing band of Scots playing in Italy. Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour won the title last year with Napoli, with the former also nominated for the Ballon d'Or. Che Adams is with Torino, Josh Doig is with Sassuolo while Liam Henderson has just joined Sampdoria, having already played for ne fewer than five Italian clubs across the past seven seasons. Udinese, who finished 12th in Italy last season, begin their season on Monday against Carrarese in the Coppa Italia.

I was determined to make instance impact, says new Celtic star Benjamin Nygren

The 24-year-old hit the bar on his debut against St Mirren the previous weekend after being preferred to the likes of club record signing Arne Engels, Luke McCowan and Paulo Bernardo in Brendan Rodgers' starting line-up. After hitting 15 goals in the Danish top flight last season and scoring twice in his first four internationals, Nygren was intent on making his mark early. 'I didn't come here to not play,' Nygren said. 'So of course I came here to try to come in fast and also show my abilities in training and training games. So of course I came here to help the team win games.' Nygren also set up Reo Hatate's goal in a 2-0 William Hill Premiership win over the Dons, although he was quick to play down his role in the Japanese midfielder's wonderful finish. However, he could have had a special assist moments later when he played a deft ball over the top which Daizen Maeda latched on to before losing his footing as he ran towards goal. Nygren knows there is a demand to contribute when he gets game time for Celtic, given the strength in depth in Rodgers' midfield. 'It would be weird if there were only 11 good players in such a big team as Celtic. I think we have, I don't know how many, 25-30 good players in Celtic, but only 11 can start the game. 'It's a very long season and now we've only played our two first games, so we will need a lot of players and a lot of good quality players. I think we have that.' Benjamin Nygren delivers the breakthrough with his first goal for the Bhoys ⚽💚#ABECEL | #CelticFC🍀 — Celtic Football Club (@CelticFC) August 10, 2025 Nygren's goal and his near miss against St Mirren both came from similar moves, with the Swede arriving on to a low ball from the left. 'That's also why I scored many goals last season, because I can run a lot,' he said. 'I always come a little bit from behind.' Nygren started in central midfield and finished the game on the wing and is happy to show his versatility. 'I think it's preferably like I started the game, but I'm a player that has played a lot of positions, so for me I don't think too much of the positions, it's football,' he said. 'You need football intelligence. It's all football.'

'Didn't come here to not play': Celtic star fires out warning amid fierce rivalry for position

Benjamin Nygren was no doubt aware that when he signed for Celtic earlier this summer, competition for starts in midfield would be fierce. Before his arrival, five into three would not go. Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers already had captain Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate, Arne Engels, Luke McCowan and Paulo Bernardo to call upon in the middle of the pitch. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Six makes it more of a crowd, so some even wondered if Nygren, a £1.5 million from FC Nordsjaelland, would be used as a wide player, given Celtic's weakest area of the pitch appears to be at the top end. Benjamin Nygren scored his first Celtic goal at Aberdeen. | SNS Group Nygren scored 16 goals in 32 matches in Danish football last season, the majority coming from left or right wing. Yet so far Rodgers has used him as a No 8 in his midfield, with the Swedish international preferred to club record signing Engels, McCowan and Bernardo, leaving nearly £20m worth of talent on the bench. Rodgers' decision has been vindicated. His debut against St Mirren in the 1-0 win was reasonable, but he proved his value to the team at Pittodrie against Aberdeen, netting the opener and then providing an assist to Hatate as Celtic ran out comfortable 2-0 winners over the Dons. The 24-year-old linked nicely on the left of the midfield three with marauding wing-back Kieran Tierney. There appears no reason to move him from his station so far and Nygren himself words of warning for those he is keeping out of the team. 'Of course, I came here to try to come in fast and show my abilities in training and training games. Of course, I came here to help the team win games. 'That's my mentality. There is competition but that is part of football, that's how it is in big clubs. It would be weird if there were only 11 good players in such a big team as Celtic. I think we have 25 or 30 good players in Celtic, but only 11 can start the game. It's a very long season. 'Now we've only played our two first games, so we will need a lot of players, a lot of good quality players. I think we have that. In terms of my position, I think it's preferable where I started the game on Sunday. But I'm a player that has played a lot of positions. For me, I don't think too much of the positions. It's football, you need football intelligence.' Benjamin Nygren fires in the opening goal past Aberdeen keeper Dimitar Mitov. | SNS Group Nygren clearly has that. Rodgers often identifies players who have the hunger to develop and learn, to take in instructions. The Gothenburg native is clearly enjoying life at Celtic Park and will hope to be involved against Falkirk in the Premier Sports Cup on Friday back on home soil. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'It was amazing to make my official debut at Celtic Park,' said Nygren. 'It's something I've visualised since I signed for the club. It was an amazing feeling and I can't wait to play many more games. 'I could have scored last week [against St Mirren] but that's part of football. Sometimes keepers make good saves and that's how it is. It's part of my game, that's also why I scored many goals last season. I can run a lot, so I always come a little bit from behind.
