Should I have had the transmission fluid flushed out of my SUV?
A: I am not a fan of flushing of most fluids unless there is catastrophic failure of the component. In fact, General Motors states that the use of external transmission fluid exchange or flush machines is not recommended for automatic or manual transmission.
Use of external machines to replace the fluid may affect the operation or durability of the transmission.
Transmission fluid should only be replaced by draining and refilling following procedures in the Service Information.
Based on GM's statement you made the right decision.
Q: In your article in The Providence Journal, you stated that every car manufacturer you have seen recommends annual oil changes. I just wanted to point out that the Chevy Volt says to change theirs when the oil life indicator says to, in two years. Just as a fun fact.
A: You are correct. I should have said every conventional powered vehicle.
Some hybrids, such as the Chevrolet Volt, Hyundai and Kia models, do have longer oil change intervals.
Chevrolet does state in the service manual that more frequent changes may be required when the vehicle is exposed to a corrosive environment, such as areas of high humidity, along an ocean coast, and/or areas that apply road salt during winter.
Then there are electric vehicles. Since they do not use oil, they have no oil change interval.
Thanks for the reminder.
Q: I have a 2013 Chrysler 200 convertible (second owner) with about 33,000 miles on it. It is a beautiful vehicle and runs well.
We're thinking of replacing it with another convertible that would have more modern safety features but a similar size.
Another option would be to have an aftermarket backup camera and Apple CarPlay installed (easier-to-view GPS). I'm leaning toward that option, since I like the car so much, but would a more modern vehicle be the better option, safety-wise? The cost is secondary at this point.
If a newer car is the better option, do you have suggestions on make/model I should look for that would be a similar size?
A: In 2013 there were several convertible choices; today there are few. Popular models include the Ford Mustang, Audi A4/5 (soon to be discontinued), BWM, Mercedes-Benz, and Mazda Miata.
At this point, it may be better to maintain and upgrade the car you have.
A good auto stereo/electronics shop can add a backup camera and upgrade the sound system with GPS and Apple CarPlay with wireless or wired charging.
Prior to going with the upgraded electronics, have a thorough inspection performed on the car, just to see how it is doing.
Q: I am considering a new vehicle. Over time, V-8 engines have been replaced with V-6 engines, and now some of those are being replaced with four-cylinder engines. How do those engines perform? How do you think they will hold up over time?
A: It is a bit of a balancing act when it comes to engine size and design. A four-cylinder engine can perform like a V-8 engine at certain times.
To maintain 60 miles per hour on the highway, you only need about 15 horsepower. Yes, under hard acceleration, that four-cylinder engine works hard, but that may only be 20% of the time.
If the engine is well designed, it should last hundreds of thousands of miles.
I recently evaluated an Infiniti QX60 and, to my surprise, the V-6 engine was replaced with a 2.0-liter variable compression turbo-charged engine. The performance matches the previous V-6 engine with slightly better fuel economy.
Q: I hated the brighter headlights on new cars until I purchased my new car that has them. These light up road signs and stripes in the road better and, perhaps, let me be a better driver, at least at night. Still, I have a problem with glare from other bright lights. My eye doctor says it's just age.
What do you think of these yellow night-driving glasses I see advertised? The glasses I see are about $30.
A: I think every day I get at least one email from companies selling these 'night-driving' glasses. What is interesting is that the companies all have different names selling the same product deigned by some unnamed Silicon-Valley start-up.
Also interesting is that some of the websites have the same typos in them.
Some drivers have told me they work, although eye care professionals say no.
When I get an email from one of these companies, I email the contact on the website and ask them to send me a pair to evaluate. So far, no glasses have been delivered. So based on that alone, I am skeptical they work.

Mitra Chem is raising $50M for its cheaper, domestic battery materials
Battery material startup Mitra Chem has raised $15.6 million of a planned $50 million funding round, according to a regulatory filing seen by TechCrunch. Mitra Chem is developing materials to make lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries store more energy. Automakers have begun to turn to LFP in an attempt to trim costs from electric vehicle battery packs, which can make up a significant portion of a car's cost. Currently, all LFP material comes from outside the United States, with the vast majority coming from China. TechCrunch reached out to Mitra Chem for comment, but did not receive an immediate reply. The new funding round comes at a challenging time for battery startups. Sales of electric vehicles (EVs) haven't grown at the rate some automakers and analysts had predicted. Simultaneously, the Trump administration and Congressional Republicans have mounted an assault on EVs and battery manufacturers. The House version of the reconciliation bill would sunset EV tax credits in 2025 or 2026, depending on how many EVs automakers have sold. The Senate has yet to weigh in on the bill. Mitra Chem previously raised a $60 million Series B that closed in 2023. GM led the round, with In-Q-Tel, Social Capital, and others participating. Chamath Palihapitiya's Social Capital led the startup's $20 million Series A in 2021. South Korean battery materials company L&F Corporation is a likely participant in the new round, having invested $10 million in March, Korean Economic Daily has reported. The company was awarded a $100 million grant from the Department of Energy last year to build a battery materials plant in Michigan. According to federal records, that award is still on the books but hasn't yet been paid out.

Rad! 2026 Ford Mustang FX Package Remasters 1980s-Era Fox Body
The so-called "Fox body" Ford Mustangs, the third-generation cars built from 1979 through 1993, are enjoying a sort of nostalgia-driven renaissance in interest these days. Unsurprisingly, this is because those who were young when the Fox bodies were on sale are now older, maybe with some extra cash and spare garage space to start collecting these Mustangs off-lawn, so to speak. How "in" are Fox bodies these days? Ford is even getting in on the action with a new FX package that celebrates the Mustang defined by the 1980s. This isn't the first time Ford has dipped into Fox-body lore lately, either—when the current Mustang arrived for 2024, its digital gauge cluster even included a setting that recreates the Fox body's old-school analog gauge pack. The FX package takes the nostalgia a lot further, of course, with white badges, white wheels, retro "Mustang" lettering, and more. It's available only on the Mustang GT Premium trim level, on both the coupe and convertible, and with or without the Performance package. It Ain't Real If It Ain't Teal Ford doesn't choose just any white paint for the FX package; since all things Mustang must treat time like a flat circle, everything you see painted white is, specifically, painted Oxford White, a hue that was available on the original Mustang. It's used for the "GT" badges, wheels, retro "Mustang" sticker on the rear glass (coupe only), and the "nostrils" in the grille on Performance package variants. There are two wheel designs and both evoke classic Fox body designs, with the version you see here adopting a slick turbofan style. The other version—for non-Performance-pack cars—is a classic five-spoke. Both wear color-matched center caps bearing "Mustang GT" lettering in what Ford says is a new font (that happens to look like an old, Fox-body font, but who's keeping close track?). Oh, and speaking of paint, the FX package introduces a new-for-2026 paint color (which also will be available on other '26 Mustangs): Adriatic Blue Metallic. Put simply, it's a rad teal color (pictured here)—what could be more Fox-body-era than that? Another new paint color this year is Orange Fury Metallic. It has no specific history linked to the Fox body, it's just worth mentioning since it hasn't been offered on the Mustang since 2019. Pivotal Digital Setting aside how blown peoples' minds would have been if, in the 1980s, their Fox body Mustangs came with the sort of digitized dashboard that today's Mustang gets (FX package included), Ford has put some effort into backdating the FX's interior. Plaid-like seat inserts do a lot of the heavy lifting here, but remember, there's always that Fox body gauge cluster option. Less obvious is the Dark Alley interior trim borrowed from the Mustang Dark Horse model, as well as subtle blue stitching and a "Mustang GT" badge on the passenger-side dash. Ford hasn't outlined the FX package's price yet, but mentions that order books for the 2026 Mustang lineup overall open in later in June 2025. We'll surely find out then how much this retro FX package (and the Mustang overall) costs. But if you want to rock out with your 1980s out in a new-generation Mustang, you should definitely peep this one.

Apple announces new CarPlay with iOS 26 at WWDC — here's the new look and features
Apple has just announced iOS 26 at WWDC 2025, complete with the new "Liquid Glass" design. This redesign is covering the entire Apple ecosystem, not just iPhones, and that means Apple CarPlay is also getting that shiny new translucent design as well. Plus a few more interesting features. This isn't exactly a "new CarPlay." It's more like the old CarPlay with a fresh coat of paint. It's to make sure the Apple interface on cars matches that on other platforms, which is especially important when you remember that CarPlay runs from your iPhone. iOS 26 wouldn't be much of a redesign if it didn't cover absolutely everything, after all. And Apple confirmed that you'll be getting the sleek Liquid Glass look in light and dark mode. Functionally CarPlay looks like it'll work in the same way, but those extra features are going to change how you interact with it. Incoming features mentioned at WWDC include a shrunken down call and messaging interface, so that it's not covering your navigation, as well as the option to pin certain conversations for quick access. Notably Apple is adding extra widgets to the user interface as well, which looks rather similar to the Android Auto revamp from a few years back. That means you have different blocks on screen showing off different apps, including music playback, calendar alerts and Live Activities. That's right, Apple's adding Dynamic Island features to your car. We saw a flight status show up on the side of the screen during the presentation, but I'd be surprised if this didn't apply to most (if not all) of the Live Activities you'd see on your phone. Which, as my colleague Richard Priday said, feels like it was designed purely for romcom cliches. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Apple also confirmed that all of these changes, from design to functionality, will be coming to CarPlay Ultra as well. However the company didn't announce any new partnerships, or information on which future cars will come with the software. So, for now, it looks like Carplay Ultra will be exclusive to James Bond wannabes with the latest Aston Martins.
