If your phone's always on silent, you might have these hidden psychological traits

If you always keep your phone on silent, you might be sending a message to the world about how you live and think, not just avoiding noise. People who don't use their phones could be practicing a hidden form of mindfulness that changes how they live their lives, from better focus to stronger boundaries. How does silencing your phone affect your brain? A new study from Kyung Hee University says that turning off your phone could show that you have hidden mental strengths like mindfulness, self-awareness, and control. This shows how even a small change in environment can have a big effect on mood, focus, and social presence. Researchers investigated whether office workers' stress, burnout, and work engagement could be enhanced by a mobile mindfulness training (MMT) program. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cara Membantu Orang Terkasih Menghadapi Limfoma Limfoma Pelajari Undo 114 participants in total were randomly assigned to either the experimental or control groups for the study. For four weeks, the experimental group engaged in mindfulness exercises using the InMind app, while the control group followed suit. Before, after four weeks, and after eight weeks, assessments were carried out. According to the study, participants' focus and stress levels improved after using the mindfulness app. Participants who changed their lifestyles, like turning off their phones, showed the best results. Making the decision to turn off phones can have major psychological advantages, as per a report by Earth. Live Events What are the hidden habits of silent-phone users? Individual boundaries According to Adrian Ward, an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Austin's McCombs School of Business, having a smartphone nearby can drastically impair cognitive function. The mind can be captivated by even a silent phone. Muting devices can restore focus and a peaceful work environment. By removing the expectation of instant response, the lack of chirps conveys respect for individual boundaries. Friends and coworkers eventually learn to text first and wait, which strengthens the owner's sense of independence. The boundary transforms silence into courtesy rather than avoidance by acting as a gate that opens according to the owner's schedule rather than a wall that keeps people out. Seizing control of your time Silent phone users are eager to avoid interruptions since it can take them 23–15 seconds to regain complete focus. They reduce the number of hours in a week, group responses into predetermined blocks, and separate urgent from noisy interactions by managing notification windows. The brain can anticipate longer concentration arcs and complete projects in less time when notifications are muted. In creative or analytical work, where even a brief pause can shatter ideas, the cumulative effect resembles compound interest, with each saved minute expanding into longer productive stretches. Practicing mindfulness Silent phones can promote calm and lessen external triggers, improving attention and vitality among Korean office workers, according to a four-week mobile mindfulness program. The phone enables deliberate breathing exercises in place of automatic swipes by muting alerts. The phone is still accessible in case of emergencies, but the silent setting lessens outside distractions before meditation starts. Silence and steady breathing are linked to relaxation, which makes people more present, relaxed, and less likely to shiver under duress. It has been demonstrated that this strategy works well to cut down on sounds that make people anxious. Alleviate tension Even when the message is unimportant, silent phones can lessen stress by lowering the volume of noise that sets the body up for action. Attentional distraction has been linked to increased stress, negative moods, and decreased productivity, according to research. By turning off the ringtone, you can protect your nervous system from the constant barrage of notifications, which keeps your heart rate and cortisol levels low for longer. This lessens the background stress that many employees take for granted and enhances sleep quality by preventing the temptation to check for one final ping at midnight. ALSO READ: Think 10,000 steps is the magic number? It might not be the best goal for you Surging for depth People who use silent phones participate completely in conversations, picking up on pauses and changes in tone that others might overlook. Stronger social support and trust result from this depth, which screen time metrics cannot measure. They are frequently described as "good listeners," which helps them in situations involving collaboration and leadership. As their presence becomes more valuable due to its rarity, stronger bonds are formed. Keeping up with the flow People, especially those who suffer from high levels of FOMO, frequently check their phones in silent mode. In order to break the feedback loop between anxiety and silence, seasoned muters combat this by hiding the phone. Additionally, they turn off lock-screen previews, eliminating visual cues that might entice them to return. Like noise-canceling headphones for the mind, they provide a multi-layered defense against distraction by coordinating sound, sight, and distance. In order to break burnout-prone workflows, the device cuts power once it is out of reach, enabling users to enter what psychologists refer to as "flow." Self-awareness Instead of depending solely on willpower, silent phone users prioritize self-awareness by establishing environments that support their objectives. They schedule introspective walks, establish bedtimes, and set aside time for screen-free reading. A greater message is conveyed by this little ritual: attention is limited, valuable, and best used consciously. They maintain intention and cultivate a more mindful way of living by setting their phone to silent mode. FAQs Does setting your phone to silent really reduce stress? Yes. According to studies, fewer interruptions can help lower cortisol levels and improve focus, sleep, and overall calm. Why do silent phone users appear to be more mindful? They intentionally set boundaries, control when and how they engage, and reduce mental clutter caused by constant pings.

US Supreme Court preserves key element of Obamacare preventive care

The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday preserved a key element of the Obamacare law that helps guarantee that health insurers cover preventive care such as cancer screenings and HIV prevention medication at no cost to patients. The 6-3 decision written by conservative Justice Brett Kavanaugh reversed a lower court's ruling that the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which under the 2010 law formally called the Affordable Care Act has a major role in choosing what services will be covered, was not validly appointed. The ruling means that certain life-saving tests and treatments must continue to be provided cost-free under most insurance plans. That allays concerns raised by public health advocates that the court might open the door to insurers subjecting these services to co-pays and deductibles, deterring many Americans from obtaining them. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Join new Free to Play WWII MMO War Thunder War Thunder Play Now Undo The task force's 16 members are selected by the U.S. secretary of health and human services without Senate confirmation. The New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals had found that this arrangement violated the U.S. Constitution's provision on the appointment of governmental officers. The case arose when several individual Christian plaintiffs and two small businesses sued in federal court in Texas in 2020 to challenge the task force's structure. It was the latest in a years-long series of challenges to Democratic former President Barack Obama's signature legislative achievement to reach the Supreme Court. Live Events A key question in the case was whether the task force wields power to such an extent that its members, under the Constitution's "appointments clause," are "principal officers" who must be appointed by the president and confirmed by the U.S. Senate or "inferior officers" not subject to these requirements. Kavanaugh wrote that because task force members are adequately supervised by the U.S. secretary of health and human services, members are "inferior officers" and do not need to be appointed by the president and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. "The Task Force members are removable at will by the Secretary of HHS, and their recommendations are reviewable by the Secretary before they take effect," Kavanaugh wrote. "So Task Force members are supervised and directed by the Secretary, who in turn answers to the President, preserving the chain of command," wrote Kavanaugh, who was joined by fellow conservative Justices John Roberts and Amy Coney Barrett, as well as the court's three liberal members. Three conservative justices - Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch - dissented. Before the case was narrowed to the appointments issue, the plaintiffs had included a religious objection to being required to cover pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV. They claimed that such drugs "facilitate and encourage homosexual behavior, prostitution, sexual promiscuity and intravenous drug use." The U.S. government's appeal of the decision by the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals initially was filed by Democratic former President Joe Biden's administration before being taken up by Republican President Donald Trump's administration. The task force is made up of medical experts who serve four-year terms on a volunteer basis. It reviews medical evidence and public feedback and issues recommendations about which preventive services would be most effective for detecting illnesses earlier or addressing ailments before a patient's condition worsens. The task force has identified dozens of preventive services as having a high or moderate net benefit to patients including screenings to detect diabetes and various types of cancer, statin medications to lower the risk of heart disease and stroke, and interventions to help patients quit smoking or unhealthy alcohol use. The 5th Circuit ruled in 2024 that the task force's structure violates the Constitution, as the plaintiffs claimed. The justices during April 21 arguments in the case posed questions over whether the law gives the HHS secretary the appropriate level of supervision over the task force, including the power to influence its recommendations and fire members at will, or if it operates as a largely independent governmental body whose recommendations effectively have the force of law. The Justice Department urged the justices to view the task force's members as "inferior officers." Hashim Mooppan, a Justice Department lawyer, told the justices that the HHS secretary can remove task force members at will, review their recommendations and prevent them from taking effect, and can require the task force to obtain his approval before it issues any recommendations. The plaintiffs contended that the task force's lack of supervision and insulation from removal makes its members "principal officers."

Is it lupus or something else? Skin conditions that look alarmingly similar

It is a disease that occurs in the body after the immune system becomes deranged and starts destroying tissues found in the body, leading to extensive damage and inflammation. Patients who have lupus are at risk for malar rashes, photosensitivity, etc. The skin manifestation will be provoked or worsened by the sun and will be the same in different patients. Conditions that can mimic lupus rashes Rosacea: A long-standing illness that usually affects the face, producing long-standing redness, easily seen blood vessels, and, in some cases, acne-like papules. Rosacea is an imitation of the butterfly rash but without the accompanying systemic findings of weakness, arthralgic-type joint pain, or organ failure as in lupus. Seborrheic Dermatitis: Red scaling lesions on scalp, nose, eyebrows. Seborrheic dermatitis is a carbon copy of lupus. Dermatomyositis is an autoimmune disorder that also produces muscle weakness with associated rashes on the skin. Although it comes about in much the same way that lupus does, one of the major distinctions involves the inflammation of muscles. Psoriasis: Psoriasis involves thick scaly patches over the elbows, knees, and scalp. But its rashes on the skin even mimic lupus rashes on sun-exposed skin at times. Solar Urticaria: Uncommon sun sensitivity that produces hives and red, stinging welts on skin exposed to the sun. It is falsely identical in appearance to lupus photosensitivity, so it's difficult to diagnose. Why getting the diagnosis right matters The correct diagnosis must be made to treat appropriately. Inappropriate treatment with immunosuppression of a lupus simulator for actual lupus will fail or be toxic in seborrheic dermatitis or rosacea. Organ toxicity will be the result of uncontrolled secondary systemic inflammation due to failure to make a correct diagnosis of actual lupus. Diagnosis of lupus is performed with a thorough clinical evaluation, laboratory tests like the antinuclear antibody (ANA) test, and even skin biopsy in certain instances. Doctors must keep in mind all the symptoms available, like arthralgias, weakness, and organ failure, and even cutaneous manifestations, in trying to diagnose properly. Even as lupus comes hand in hand with common manifestations of skin illnesses whose diagnosis is ordinary for any circumstance, professional medical evaluation for conditions that will come close to mirroring lupus is valid since there exist several skin disorders such as rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, dermatomyositis, psoriasis, and solar urticaria. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending Local Enterprise Accounting Software [Click Here] Accounting ERP Click Here Undo All these and many more ailments simulate lupus.
