IMDA to provide more AI support for SMEs; 800 jobs, training opportunities secured

Business Times27-05-2025

[SINGAPORE] The Infocomm and Media Development Authority (IMDA) will provide small and medium enterprises (SMEs) more support in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), and create more job opportunities.
In a speech at the Asia Tech X Singapore conference on Tuesday (May 27), Singapore Senior Minister of State for Digital Development and Information Tan Kiat How announced the scale-up of the GenAI x Digital Leaders initiative. The initiative, launched in 2024, has supported 50 GenAI projects with the potential of up to 50 per cent productivity improvements and cost savings of S$300,000 per enterprise.
The minister said the initiative would be scaled up to benefit an additional 1,000 enterprises and support up to 500 projects in the next one year.
For the scale-up of the GenAI x Digital Leaders initiative, IMDA, together with partners Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft, will:
Double the number of tech discovery and deep-dive sessions, and increase one-on-one consultations;
Reduce development costs and deployment time for custom GenAI solutions by 50 per cent with pre-built modules designed for common use cases;
Provide access to technical expertise along with additional resources such as computing power and cloud credits.
More jobs
IMDA is boosting efforts to build the AI talent pipeline in an effort to drive economic growth.
'The digital economy contributes 18 per cent of Singapore GDP, and despite global uncertainty, I expect technology, especially AI, to be able to drive quality economic growth,' said Tan.

There are currently over 26 AI centres of excellence (COE), which require AI practitioners to run. Grab was the latest to launch an AI COE, creating 50 job opportunities.
The regulator has secured 800 AI-related jobs and training opportunities as Singapore aims to triple the pool of AI practitioners to 15,000. Of these, 400 are with companies such as AWS, Microsoft, Oracle and Singtel. Singaporeans will be hired and trained to take on AI practitioner roles in this collaboration between the companies and IMDA.
IMDA is also partnering AI Singapore (AISG) and companies to launch two new training programmes to create 400 more AI practitioner opportunities. An AI Apprenticeship Programme (Industry) developed in partnership with AI COEs to train locals in AI practitioner roles and the Pinnacle AI Industry Programme design to train existing AI practitioners into model builders.
New partners
Three new partners for the Digital Enterprise Blueprint (DEB) were also announced – Alibaba Cloud, ST Engineering and Prudential Singapore. The initiative, launched in 2024, has seen over 10,000 enterprises benefit from the fostered collaboration between partners in the ecosystem.
Alibaba Cloud will:
Raise the digital capability of up to 3,000 SMEs in cloud technologies and AI;
Provide cloud credits of up to US$1,000 for 800 SMEs and 200 digital solutions providers;
Conduct six AI-related technical training workshops and quarterly technical consultations and a 30-day trial to Alibaba Cloud AI Model Studio
Prudential will:
Develop educational content of up to 10 GenAI explainer videos to help SMEs understand and adopt GenAI tools;
Conduct up to four workshops to help SMEs understand IMDA's pre-approved GenAI solutions
ST Engineering will:
Provide a one-time complimentary cyber threat scanning services for up to 2,000 SMEs through IMDA's CTO-as-a-Service Platform and a cyber threat report with detailed recommendations;
Conduct cybersecurity awareness event for up to 2,000 SMEs on strategies to bolster cyber defence
'Limited resources and lack of in-house cybersecurity expertise make it tough for SMEs to manage risks, underscoring the need for greater support to strengthen their cyber defences,' said Goh Eng Choon, president of cyber, ST Engineering.
The existing DEB partners are Singapore Business Federation, Singapore Computer Society, SGTech, AWS, Google, Microsoft and Salesforce.

Meta in talks for Scale AI investment that could top $12.9 billion

This would be Meta's biggest ever external AI investment, and a rare move for the company. PHOTO: REUTERS NEW YORK – Facebook parent Meta Platforms is in talks to make a multibillion-dollar investment into artificial intelligence start-up Scale AI, according to people familiar with the matter. The financing could exceed US$10 billion (S$12.9 billion) in value, some of the people said, making it one of the largest private company funding events of all time. The terms of the deal are not finalised and could still change, according to the people. A representative for Scale did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Meta declined to comment. Scale AI, whose customers include Microsoft and OpenAI, provides data labeling services to help companies train machine-learning models and has become a key beneficiary of the generative AI boom. The start-up was last valued at about US$14 billion in 2024, in a funding round that included backing from Meta and Microsoft. Earlier this year, Bloomberg reported that Scale was in talks for a tender offer that would value it at US$25 billion. This would be Meta's biggest ever external AI investment, and a rare move for the company. The social media giant has before now mostly depended on its in-house research, plus a more open development strategy, to make improvements in its AI technology. Meanwhile, Big Tech peers have invested heavily: Microsoft has put more than US$13 billion into OpenAI while both and Alphabet have injected billions into rival Anthropic. Part of those companies' investments have been through credits to use their computing power. Meta doesn't have a cloud business, and it's unclear what format Meta's investment will take. Chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg has made AI Meta's top priority, and said in January that the company would spend as much as US$65 billion on related projects in 2025. The company's push includes an effort to make Llama the industry standard worldwide. Meta's AI chatbot – already available on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp – is used by 1 billion people per month. Scale, co-founded in 2016 by CEO Alexandr Wang, has been growing quickly: The start-up generated revenue of US$870 million last year and expects sales to more than double to US$2 billion in 2025, Bloomberg previously reported. Scale plays a key role in making AI data available for companies. Because AI is only as good as the data that goes into it, Scale uses scads of contract workers to tidy up and tag images, text and other data that can then be used for AI training. Scale and Meta share an interest in defense tech. Last week, Meta announced a new partnership with defense contractor Anduril Industries to develop products for the US military, including an AI-powered helmet with virtual and augmented reality features. Meta has also granted approval for US government agencies and defense contractors to use its AI models. The company is already partnering with Scale on a program called Defense Llama – a version of Meta's Llama large language model intended for military use. Scale has increasingly been working with the US government to develop AI for defense purposes. Earlier in 2025 the start-up said it won a contract with the Defense Department to work on AI agent technology. The company called the contract 'a significant milestone in military advancement.' Microsoft unveils ROG Xbox Ally handheld video game devices

The peek at Xbox Ally came just days after the release of Nintendo's Switch 2. PHOTO: AFP SAN FRANCISCO - Microsoft on June 8 unveiled its first Xbox-branded handheld gaming devices, touting them as a way to play its vast library of titles anywhere. Two 'ROG Xbox Ally' models made in a partnership with Taiwan-based Asus will be available by the year-end holiday season, Xbox president Sarah Bond said during an online event showcasing games heading for the platform. 'The Xbox Ally is an Xbox you can hold in your hands, bringing together the power of Xbox and the freedom of Windows,' Ms Bond said. 'On this Xbox, you can play games across your entire library, including all the Windows PC game stores from Xbox and to Steam, GOG (Good Old Games platform) and Ubisoft Connect.' The peek at Xbox Ally came just days after the release of Nintendo's Switch 2, the handheld console that could score record early sales for the Japanese 'Super Mario' creator. The Nintendo device, which features a bigger screen and more processing power, is an upgrade to the Switch that became a global phenomenon with hit games such as 'Animal Crossing'. Microsoft promised to disclose pricing and release date details for Xbox Ally in the coming months. Both Xbox handhelds appeared similar to Microsoft console controllers in terms of buttons, toggles and grips but looked elongated to provide room for center screens. 'When you power on your Xbox Ally, you'll boot directly into the Xbox full screen experience, a new feature optimized specifically for handheld gaming,' Microsoft said in a release. 'The Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X are perfect for players looking to take an approachable gaming experience with you during travels – whether it's between airports, or between the comfiest chairs in the living room.' Arina East Residences sells 10 out of 107 units at average price of S$3,000 psf as booking opens

[SINGAPORE] Freehold development Arina East Residences sold about 9 per cent of its 107 units on Saturday (Jun 7), at an average price of about S$3,000 per square foot (psf). According to PropNex, seven units of the two-bedroom apartment, a three-bedroom, and two four-bedroom units were moved, with the transacted unit prices of these 10 apartments ranging from about S$2,880 to S$3,250 per square foot. The majority of the buyers of the Tanjong Rhu Road project by ZACD LV Development are believed to be Singaporeans, the real estate agency said in a media statement on Saturday. Chief executive officer of PropNex, Ismail Gafoor, said: 'Typically, we have observed that smaller projects with around 100 units in the development tend to see a more measured take-up rate at first, unlike the bigger projects with more units for buyers to choose from… Similar to many other smaller projects, we expect sales will likely move at a gradual pace over the coming months.' ERA, one of the joint marketing agents for the project, noted that the development only had a one-week preview before opening for sales bookings during school holidays, and that Saturday was a public holiday. CEO of ERA Singapore, Marcus Chu, pointed out that it was the first project launched in the area in a decade, and buyers recognised the project's strong potential for capital appreciation. 'The future BTO (Build-to-order) supply in the vicinity is projected to support investor exit strategies, providing a ready pool of upgraders in the long term.' While some agencies called the average price 'competitive', Nicholas Mak, chief research officer at property search portal said that it is higher than its competitors, and that most homebuyers appear to be more price sensitive, especially in the current uncertain economic climate. 'Real estate developers have held back their project launches since April 2025 as the uncertain economic outlook hammers sentiments in the property market. Arina East Residences is the first major residential project to test the water since April. It appears that the market sentiment is still not favourable for project launches,' he said. Arina East Residences is built on the site of the former La Ville, a 40-unit property that was acquired by ZACD Group in December 2021 for S$152 million.
