St Gerard's School pupil making waves in canoe slalom world
The 15-year-old from Llanberis is a dedicated year-round paddler. He trains on Llyn Padarn and at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham and has competed in the Junior Slalom European Cup in France and Germany as part of the Welsh Performance Team.
Toby joined St Gerard's aged seven and is about to start Year 11. He says the school has played a key role in helping him chase his goals.
'My ultimate aim is to reach the highest national division, then Team GB,' said Toby.
'I'd love to make it to the World Championships or the Olympics one day.
'The school has been so supportive - always helping me catch up or send me extra work when I've missed lessons to compete overseas. I'm really grateful.'
Toby is also finding success in kayak cross, a fast, contact-heavy race discipline. He reached the semi-finals in Augsburg, Germany, and came third in a recent open event in Nottingham. 'We had access to the lake and tried a few local taster sessions,' said mum Vicki.
'From his very first go in a C1 canoe, he just lit up - the smile hasn't left his face since.'
Dad Will said: 'It's great to see St Gerard's backing young athletes. Their support and sponsorship for Toby have made a real difference and the sport needs new talent like him coming through.'

Toby is also finding success in kayak cross, a fast, contact-heavy race discipline that debuted at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He reached the semi-finals in Augsburg, Germany, and came third in a recent open event in Nottingham.

He was represented by his mother Deirdre, who said: 'They're all superstars and such lovely horses to have at home and look after. Joe said she was so quiet down at the start he was hoping she was all right as she was so well behaved. 'He said she was never going to get beat, she was out there in front, really enjoying it and when he kicked, off she went. 'It was fantastic. She's done nothing wrong and black type is a big thing for Kirsten, we've got big black type but in Group company would be even better.'

British horse rider Sarah Yorke, 37, dies after fall at equestrian event
British rider Sarah Yorke has died aged 37 after falling off her horse at an event in Northamptonshire. Yorke was competing at the Aston-le-Walls Horse Trials on Friday when she fell at the third fence of the course, which includes showjumping and cross-country obstacles. The 37-year-old was given immediate medical treatment but died from the fall. Her horse, MGH Hera, did not suffer an injury and walked back to the stable after the accident. Yorke and MGH Hera were competing at the BE100 level of the British Eventing competition for the first time together. At that level of competition, the maximum height of show jumping fences is 105cm, and cross-country fences are 100cm. Last month, she won with her seven-year-old horse in the BE90 class at Swalcliffe Park in Oxfordshire. The three-day trials at Aston-le-Walls, which were due to enter their final day on Saturday, have been abandoned after the accident. A statement from British Eventing read: 'It is with the deepest sadness that we confirm Sarah Yorke (GBR), 37, suffered a fatal accident while competing at Aston-le-Walls Horse Trials in Northamptonshire, England, on Friday 8 August 2025. 'Medical professionals attended immediately following her fall at fence 3; however, tragically, she could not be saved. More Trending 'Her horse, MGH Hera, was assessed by the on-site vets, walked back to the stable, and is uninjured.' Yorke was competing at BE100 level for the first time with her horse, MGH Hera, a division designed for grassroots riders to gain experience. British Eventing (BE) said medical professionals attended immediately after the fall but 'tragically, she could not be saved'.
