[UPDATED] Rafizi: I'll quit cabinet if I lose PKR deputy presidency race
SERDANG: Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli has pledged to resign from the cabinet if he fails to retain the PKR deputy presidency in the party elections later this month.
Rafizi, who is set to face vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar in a straight fight for the party's number two post, said he would not allow his ministerial duties to be compromised by political distractions.
He made it clear that while he would step down from cabinet if defeated, he had no intention of quitting politics and would continue serving as the member of Parliament for Pandan.
"I have spoken to my colleagues in government, including those from GPS and Barisan Nasional. I assured them that this internal contest will not disrupt the administration. There will be no chaos, no mischief, and no threat to stability.
"If I lose, I will step down. I will continue as a regular MP. Without the burden of ministerial responsibilities, I can focus fully on my parliamentary role," he said during his podcast Yang Bakar Menteri here today.
Rafizi also said he welcomes the opportunity to speak more freely once relieved of his position in the administration.
"I will be happy – my hands and mouth will no longer be tied. As a member of the administration, I am often limited in what I can say or respond to (any arising matter).
"Previously, I was part of the administration. Even if I disagreed, for example, with Tan Sri Azam Baki's reappointment as MACC chief commissioner, I couldn't say so publicly because I was part of the administration.
"It would breach protocol, as the decision was made by the prime minister. So I had to keep quiet," he said.
Commenting further, Rafizi said he also had to remain silent even if he disagreed with Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh on various issues.
He said if he were to speak out, it would prompt media coverage of discord among ministers.
Rafizi is being challenged by long-time ally Nurul Izzah Anwar for the PKR deputy presidency.
Nurul Izzah is believed to enjoy broad support from within PKR, with many divisions pledging to back her for the deputy presidency.
PKR deputy information chief Datuk Sero R. Ramanan previously revealed that more than 150 PKR divisions have given support for the nomination of Nurul Izzah Anwar for the post of deputy president in the upcoming party election.

Poland may introduce partial controls on German border in summer, PM says
The Speaker of the Polish Parliament, Szymon Hołownia, observes as Prime Minister Donald Tusk responds to parliamentary inquiries on the day a vote of confidence is scheduled for his center-left coalition government, in Warsaw, Poland, June 11, 2025. REUTERS/Kacper Pempel WARSAW (Reuters) -Poland is likely to introduce partial controls on its border with Germany in the summer if the number of migrant crossings continues to grow, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk told lawmakers on Wednesday. Tusk's liberal government has faced accusations from the nationalist opposition that it has been accepting numerous illegal immigrants being sent back from Germany based on European Union rules. The government argues that the numbers are very limited. He added that every group of migrants sent back from Germany will be checked very carefully. "If the situation on the border, the pressure (worsens)... I will not hesitate to make a decision to introduce temporary controls. It is likely that we will introduce such partial controls on the border with Germany in the summer," Tusk said. "I know all too well what illegal migration means for the future of Poland, for the future of our civilization," he told lawmakers. Tusk also said he does not rule out restricting visa-free travel from some countries whose citizens have been associated with criminal incidents in Poland, such as Georgia. Poland has been facing what it says is a migrant crisis orchestrated by Belarus and Russia on its eastern border since 2021. Both countries deny encouraging migrants to cross. Azalina: Madani reforms making real progress, not just rhetoric
KUALA LUMPUR: The government's reform agenda is showing tangible results and progressing through a structured, deliberate process. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the reforms will, however, take time. She said she agreed with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim when he said reforms cannot be rushed and emphasised that change must be carefully planned and implemented. "He's certainly right in stating that reform is not a sprint but a structured, deliberate process," she said in a statement. Yesterday, Anwar, responding to criticisms over the pace of reform, said efforts must be grounded in political reality, particularly in a coalition government that does not command a simple majority. His remarks came days after PKR backbencher Wong Chen had said he would take a two-week break to reflect on his political future. The Subang MP had also voiced concern that the government could reach the end of its term with little to show in terms of institutional reforms. However, Azalina stressed that the government has already delivered key milestones. "I must firmly remind both the public and lawmakers that the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), alongside the agencies under our purview, has already delivered the Parliamentary Services Act 2025 and spearheaded more than 30 legal amendments since 2023. "This is not mere rhetoric. It is concrete evidence that the Madani reform agenda is very much alive and advancing." Azalina added that systemic reform was never instantaneous, and for good reason. "As policymakers, we must ensure that every reform is not only ambitious but also implementable. There is no wisdom in putting the cart before the horse.

Mustapha open to friendly contests if seat talks fail
Published on: Wednesday, June 11, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 11, 2025 By: Mohamad Fadli, FMT Text Size: SERDANG: Sabah PKR chief Mustapha Sakmud ( pic ) says he is open to 'friendly contests' between allies if the ongoing negotiations over seat allocations ahead of the Sabah state election fail. Mustapha said PKR is working to prevent clashes between parties in the government coalition, and aiming for fair seat distribution without overlaps. Advertisement 'We're still negotiating and doing our best to avoid contests. The goal is fair allocation without duplication,' he said. 'But if talks break down, friendly contests are an option. It's common in politics.' He did not specify which parties are involved in the negotiations. Mustapha, the deputy higher education minister, was speaking to reporters at an event at Universiti Putra Malaysia here today. Sabah Umno treasurer Salleh Said Keruak yesterday suggested that overlapping seats be handled through friendly contests, while maintaining unity and a shared objective. He said this approach was better than allowing internal tensions or encouraging sponsored independent candidates. Mustapha said PKR's main priority was political stability, and warned that clashes at the state level could strain relationships within the federal government. 'I urge everyone to stay open-minded. There's no benefit in fighting among ourselves and risking division. 'We want unity to continue. Avoiding unnecessary contests can help reduce friction among parties,' he said. - FMT * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
