Nigeria attacks kill 44: local official - Africa
At least 44 people have been killed in separate attacks in recent days in central Nigeria, a local government official said Tuesday, raising the toll in the latest raids in a region where herders and farmers often clash.
The attacks occurred in three villages between Friday and Monday, the chairman of the Gwer West local government area of Benue state, Ormin Torsar Victor, told AFP.
Motives for the violence were not clear, but Victor blamed the "coordinated attacks" on Fulani cattle herders.
Muslim ethnic Fulani nomadic herders have long clashed with settled farmers, many of whom are Christian, in Benue over access to land and resources.
"As of today morning I passed through Aondona, they were mentioning 14 bodies that have been recovered, including a pregnant woman and a boy of two," he told AFP, adding that 30 others were killed in Ahume.
"Yesterday evening one person was killed, the number keeps increasing by the day. Even now I think some corpses have not yet been discovered," he said, calling the attacks "systematic".
The victims were either shot or stabbed, he said.
He said the "pregnant woman was macheted" while the two-year-old boy was "mutilated".
A Catholic priest was shot and wounded while driving along the Markudi-Naka road, the church and the local government official said.
"They shot him and left him there thinking he was dead," said Victor, adding that two passengers that were with him were abducted.
In a call for prayers for the wounded priest posted on Facebook, the church said he was shot by "suspected terrorist herdsmen".
'Coordinated attacks'
A resident of Aondona, Ruthie Dan Sam, told AFP late Monday that "20 people were killed here in Aondona".
"Children of less than two are being killed. The worst sight is a baby macheted on its mouth," she said.
She added that other people had been killed in neighbouring villages, but said she had no figures.
Victor said he and other locals had buried five people, including a father and two of his sons killed in the village of Tewa Biana "very close to a military base".
Benue state police spokesperson Anene Sewuese Catherine confirmed two attacks in the area but said her office had received "no report of 20 people" killed.
She said that one raid resulted in the death of a policeman who had "repelled an attack" and that "three dead bodies were discovered".
The attacks in Nigeria's so-called Middle Belt often take on a religious or ethnic dimension.
Benue has been one of the states hit hardest by such violence between nomadic herders and farmers who blame herdsmen for destroying farmland with their cattle grazing.

The Minister further highlighted the need to reduce random slaughtering in public streets, both to preserve environmental cleanliness and to ensure the safety and quality of the meat. He urged citizens to utilize the nearest government-operated slaughterhouses, which are offering free slaughter services throughout the Eid holiday. These facilities also conduct veterinary checks and visual inspections of livestock before slaughter. On the first day of Eid Al-Adha, a time when hundreds of thousands of Egyptians perform the ritual slaughter of livestock, Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber issued a warning against slaughtering animals in public streets and leaving behind waste. He confirmed that environmental violation reports would be filed against offenders, with fines reaching up to EGP 10,000 (approximately USD 202) for those who leave animal waste or blood in public areas. The Governor also announced that all government slaughterhouses in Cairo will remain open around the clock during the holiday to accommodate citizens' sacrificial animals free of charge.

Israel opens fire again near Gaza aid point killing at least 15 Palestinians - War on Gaza
The Israeli occupation army killed at least 15 people on Tuesday in southern Gaza near a US-backed aid centre, rescuers said. The shooting was similar to one Sunday morning in which scores of people were killed and wounded at the same location, with witnesses saying they had been on their way to collect aid. "At least 15 people were killed and dozens wounded... when Israeli forces opened fire with tanks and drones on thousands of civilians who had gathered since dawn near the Al-Alam roundabout in the Al-Mawasi area, northwest of Rafah," said civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal. The roundabout is about a kilometre from an aid centre run by the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a recently formed group that Israel has cooperated with to implement a new aid distribution mechanism in the territory, aimed at bypassing UN agencies that have long coordinated humanitarian relief in Gaza. Rania al-Astal, 30, said she had gone with her husband to try to get food. "The shooting began intermittently around 5:00 am. Every time people approached Al-Alam roundabout, they were fired upon," she told AFP. "But people didn't care and rushed forward all at once -- that's when the army began firing heavily." 'Unacceptable' Mohammed al-Shaer, 44, who was also at the scene, said the crowd had just set off towards the aid centre when "suddenly, the Israeli army fired shots into the air, then began shooting directly at the people". "A helicopter and quadcopters (drones) started firing at the crowd to prevent them from approaching the tank barrier. There were injuries and deaths," he told AFP. "I didn't reach the centre, and we didn't get any food." Sunday's shooting also took place at the Al-Alam roundabout as people gathered before heading to the aid centre, rescuers and witnesses said, with the civil defence reporting 31 people killed and 176 wounded. Afterwards, the army denied firing at people "while they were near or within" the aid site. But a military source acknowledged "warning shots were fired towards several suspects" about a kilometre away. UN chief Antonio Guterres called for an independent investigation into that shooting, calling it "unacceptable that Palestinians are risking their lives for food". Soldiers killed Israel has come under mounting pressure to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza, where people are facing severe shortages of food and other essentials after Israel imposed a more than two-month blockade on all supplies. The blockade was recently eased, but the aid community has urged Israeli to allow in more food, faster. The US-backed GHF has recently opened four aid distribution centres in southern and central Gaza, and says it has distributed more than seven million meals' worth of food. However, the United Nations and major aid groups have refused to cooperate with it, saying it contravenes humanitarian principles and appears designed to cater to Israeli military objectives. Israel has, in March, stepped up its genocidal war on Gaza, breaking the short truce. The Israeli occupation army said Tuesday that three of its soldiers had been killed in the territory's north, bringing the number of Israeli troops killed in the Palestinian territory since the start of the war to 424.
