The next Chinese car giant to break the UK market this year

Another Chinese car maker that you've probably never heard of is bringing its first car to the UK – and it's an electric model.
Geely Auto Group, the seventh-largest automaker in China, will debut its brand under its own name on our shores with the arrival of its EX5 SUV towards the end of the year.
As Geely Group owns Volvo, Polestar and Lotus, it's no stranger to the British market, but this is the first time it will have its own Geely passenger cars on sale - and marks a significant move in the Chinese powerhouse's rapid global expansion plans.
The Zhejiang-based firm says that 'the move begins Geely Auto's commitment to delivering a diverse range of high-quality, accessible vehicles tailored for the UK'.
Geely is the latest in a line of Chinese brands that have recently started sales in the UK, including BYD, Omoda and Jaecoo and Xpeng.
But for people left confused by the sheer amount of new Chinese cars being launched and how to tell Geely apart from the rest, then here's everything you need to know about Geely and the new EX5 SUV.
From fridge parts to EVs...
Founded in Taizhou City, in the Zhejiang Province of China, Geely started as a refrigerator parts manufacturer. That was 1986.
It was 1997 when Geely joined the automotive sector, wanting to produce affordable cars for those on tight budgets. And in doing so it became China's first privately-owned auto manufacturer.
In 2002, Geely entered into China's top 10 automakers, and by 2010 was in a position to acquire Volvo. Taking 100 per cent of the shares of Volvo Car Corporation from Ford, Geely started its Western expansion and quickly snapped up 51 per cent of Lotus in 2017, and 9.69 per cent of Daimler AG (Mercedes-Benz owner) in 2018.
Thanks to these acquisitions Geely Auto was the first Chinese car brand to sell one million vehicles.
In 2024, Geely achieved record-breaking sales of almost 2.2 million vehicles – a 34 per cent year-on-year increase.
Sales outside China increased 21 per cent year-on-year, to almost 1.22 million units. And electrified sales grew over 52 per cent to almost 45 per cent of aggregate sales.
What we know about EX5
The EX5 is an all-electric C-Segment SUV. In terms of dimensions, it's similar in size to a Nissan Qashqai.
It will be sold with the choice of 49.5kWh or 60.2kWh battery.
Customers can expect a range of 264 miles from the larger of the two batteries, and 30 to 80 per cent recharge in 20 minutes.
It is said to accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 6.6 seconds and produces 215bhp from its single, front-mounted e-motor.
Targeting the more affordable end of the market, the EX5 is a rival for the Skoda Elroq and Kia EV3.
But it offers - as has become the broader tactic deployed by Chinese car brands - a lot of comfort and tech features for the price, including heated and ventilated massage seats, voice control and a 15.4-inch Tesla-style screen with 13.4-inch head-up display.
With 410 litres of boot space and five seats that fold completely flat, the EX5 is a practical and cheap family buy.
We don't know pricing yet, but it costs the equivalent of £19,500 in Australia ($40,990) so it's likely to cost between £25,000 and £30,000 here, undercutting the Skoda Elroq (£32k) and the Kia EV3 (around £33k).
Geely hasn't confirmed UK specifications yet but has said EX5 will meet regulatory requirements for the UK and 88 other countries, and there are left-hand and right-hand drive versions already on roads across the global market.
And Lotus Engineering has been used to assess the chassis and dynamics for the EX5 to tune it for European roads and customer driving styles, so it should drive well.
Geely plans for the UK and the rest of the world
Sales will start anytime from October to the end of the year (Q4). After that expect a multitude of models to arrive from 2026.
Geely is focusing on 'strengthening market share in over 80 countries' which the Chinese maker will do by increasing exports; in 2024 Geely exports rose 53 per cent. Already Geely exceeded its annual export target of 380,000 units last year when it hit 414,552 units.
It also promises to 'enhance its channel and aftersales coverage' by opening 300 overseas sales and service outlets.
By the end of the year, it's expected to have more than 1,100 outlets worldwide – but the UK is 'one of the key regions for the marque's globalisations plans'.

Katie Price is being forced to move out of her £5k-a-month rental property just one year after being evicted from her Mucky Mansion. The former glamour model, 47, currently lives in a four bedroom, Tudor-style home in rural Sussex. Her famous Mucky Mansion - which she bought in 2014 from Tory peer Francis Maude - was put on the market and later sold in December after she was evicted due to financial issues and a second bankruptcy declaration in March 2024. Speaking on her podcast this week, Katie explained how she has started looking at houses on Rightmove after being told by her landlord that her current house was going up for sale. She said: 'I've got to move house as the guy who owns it wants to sell the house now. So, I've got to go on the house hunt again. 'I might go closer to the kids school. I am gonna talk to the guy, he might let me stay there a bit longer but he might not.' Katie added that she had been looking on Rightmove and continued: 'But if not, I will move closer to the kids school.' The glamour model finally found a buyer for the rundown £1.5million home in December after she slashed the price of the property a second time. Katie, who was evicted for not paying the mortgage, lowered the listing to £1.35million in October after already failing to sell it for the original asking price. It is now being snapped up for £1.15million, a stark contrast to the figure Katie thought the Sussex mansion was worth. A public notice on Rightmove states: 'Mortgagees in possession are now in receipt of an offer for the sum of £1,150,000.' Nonetheless, Katie won't see a penny for the sale as it will be as it will be swallowed up by the debts she previously ran up against the Sussex home. When the home was first listed, a brochure told potential buyers not to fall into Katie's empty pool and also warned the land could be contaminated by waste. An online advert said the pad could be flipped into an 'impressive family house' after refurbishment. Making no mention of its famous former owner, the ad described the property as: 'A substantial detached family home including three reception rooms, nine bedrooms and four bath/shower rooms spread over three floors plus a one-bedroom annexe.' Bailiffs evicted the star and her family from their West Sussex home in May after she failed to keep up payments on the monthly mortgage. The former model had paid £1.35m for the property in 2014 from former Tory peer Francis Maude and it featured in a Channel Four series as she attempted to renovate the house. When she moved out she claimed the house was 'cursed'. Talking about Mucky Mansion she said: 'I've had nothing but bad memories in that house', and insisted moving will be the start of a new chapter in her life. She is currently forking out almost £5,000 per month for her new property. The huge family home, which includes a double garage and open-plan kitchen, will be Katie and her five children's new house.

The chief inspector of Ofsted has apologised that schools will no longer get a full term's notice before inspection reforms are introduced in England. Last month, the watchdog said it would delay setting out its final plan for school inspections until September – just weeks before new report cards are due to be rolled out in November. School leaders' unions have threatened to tell their members to quit as Ofsted inspectors unless changes are made to the timescale for inspection reform. Speaking at the Festival of Education, Sir Martyn Oliver, chief inspector of Ofsted, said he was 'sorry' about the delayed timescale as he acknowledged it was 'difficult' for schools. At the event at Wellington College, Berkshire, Sir Martyn called on school leaders to 'judge' him on the Ofsted's revised inspection model once it is published at the start of the academic year. Last year, the Government announced that headline Ofsted grades for overall effectiveness for schools in England would be scrapped. Previously, Ofsted awarded one of four single-phrase inspection judgments: outstanding, good, requires improvement and inadequate Under proposed report cards, set out in February, schools could be graded across at least eight areas of a provision using a colour-coded five-point scale. They would receive ratings, from the red 'causing concern' to orange 'attention needed', through the green shades of 'secure', 'strong' and 'exemplary' for each area of practice. During the Q&A session at the event on Thursday, Sir Martyn suggested that Ofsted ratings can alter local house prices by thousands of pounds because parents 'value' them. When asked whether Ofsted's new report cards could affect house prices, Sir Martyn said: 'Well, I don't know.' But Sir Martyn, who used to be an academy trust leader, spoke of how he had supported two 'special measures' schools where he lived and the house prices 'shot up' after they received better Ofsted ratings. He told the audience: 'They were both in special measures, both went outstanding, and the house prices went up £15,000 within a week. 'It does make a difference.' Sir Martyn added that 'parents obviously put a value on it'. Ofsted had planned to publish its formal response to its consultation on proposed inspection reforms in the summer term ahead of the changes coming into effect in November. But Ofsted will now publish its full response in September due to the scale of the feedback it received. When asked whether this delay was fair on school leaders, Sir Martyn said: 'I think that is difficult and again I'm sorry about that.' On single-word judgments, he added: 'We've been doing something for 30-plus years in a single way. 'If I look at my phone, there will be pictures of people standing in front of their schools with balloons, with an O, an U, with a T – 'outstanding', and local newspapers up and down the country celebrate. 'It happens all of the time, and we're about to take that away and change it to something else that for more than three decades people are used to.' Sir Martyn said: 'Here's a burning question, what's Rightmove going to do?' Currently, Rightmove includes the Ofsted ratings for local schools in its listings for houses for sale. In a speech at the event, Sir Martyn said children are increasingly receiving life lessons from influencers or 'AI-generated summaries'. The Ofsted boss argued that classroom learning with human interaction 'has never been more important' as many children spend much of their lives online. He said: 'Young people are growing up in an increasingly curated world in which their favoured influencers or corporate algorithms can have a disproportionate impression on their views and opinions. 'It's more important than ever that young people are able to lift their eyes from the screen and connect with their teachers, in person.'

July 3 (Reuters) - AstraZeneca (AZN.L), opens new tab is in talks with Summit Therapeutics (SMMT.O), opens new tab to license an experimental lung-cancer drug under a deal worth as much as $15 billion, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter. Shares of Summit Therapeutics surged 9.7% to $25.81 in morning trade. The Menlo Park, California-based drug developer did not immediately respond to Reuters' request seeking comment, while an AstraZeneca spokesperson declined to comment. A deal could include an upfront payment of several billion dollars to Summit, besides milestone payments later on, Bloomberg News said. The talks could still fall apart or Summit could opt for a different partner for licensing, according to the report. The negotiations involve ivonescimab, a drug Summit secured rights for through a separate deal worth up to $5 billion with China-based Akeso ( opens new tab in December 2022. Summit is testing ivonescimab to treat patients with a type of lung cancer who have received prior treatment. The drug has already been approved in China in May last year, and Summit plans to file for marketing approval in the United States. In a late-stage study, ivonescimab, in combination with chemotherapy, showed a positive trend in overall survival, but "without achieving a statistically significant benefit," the company said in May. An earlier data last year had shown some lung cancer patients having better survival rates on the drug than those on Merck's (MRK.N), opens new tab blockbuster Keytruda. Summit and Akeso were testing ivonescimab-chemotherapy regime in a study conducted in China, against BeiGene's ( opens new tab approved drug Tevimbra in combination with chemotherapy.
