LeBron James' awkward ESPN shutdown overshadows son Bronny's NBA Summer League game amid Lakers drama

Daily Mail15 hours ago
Amid speculation over his future - and where he may take it - Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James remained coy when pressed for details by ESPN.
LeBron was in Las Vegas to watch his son, Bronny James, playing in a Summer League game for the Lakers against the New Orleans Pelicans.
With plenty of reporters scouring the floor of the Thomas & Mack Center, someone was bound to get up the journalistic courage to approach LeBron and ask him about any potential moves he could make.
That someone was ESPN's Dave McMenamin, who approached LeBron but came back empty handed.
McMenamin said that he asked James if he wanted to appear on the broadcast to address the rampant speculation about his future as a Laker, but LeBron declined, saying, 'I ain't got nothing to talk about.'
That was part of a fuller report that McMenamin gave live on the air.
With LeBron James at the Lakers game tonight, I asked him if he would like to speak to me about his future with the franchise. 'I ain't got nothing to talk about,' he said. My report for ESPN from Las Vegas. pic.twitter.com/sFRgCYHmqw

'The question on everybody's mind is, "Where will LeBron be playing next season?" I tell you, I can barely walk five feet in Vegas without someone approaching me and wondering that very thing,' McMenamin said on air.
He continued: 'What caused the speculation was a statement by LeBron's agent, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, given to ESPN's Shams Charania, when James opted into the final year of his contract with the Lakers for $53 million last month. But Paul said, "LeBron intends to play on a championship contender, whatever time is left in his career, and will be closely monitoring Lakers President of Basketball Operations and General Manager, Rob Pelinka's, moves to improve the team."'
McMenamin notes that the Lakers are poised to compete now - while they still have LeBron paired with star point guard Luka Doncic.
The reporter also said that Paul made it clear that LeBron did not ask for a trade and did not ask for a contract extension beyond next season.
However, Paul did tell McMenamin that 'four teams contacted him with interest in trading for LeBron.'
But rather than address the elephant in the room, LeBron decided to stay in the stands and watch his son in peace.
Unfortunately, Bronny didn't have the greatest of evenings. He put up 14 points and three assists on a 5-for-11 shooting line, while only hitting 1-of-5 attempts from 3-point range. He also committed four turnovers and four fouls.
The Lakers summer league team has a record of 1-1 so far.

Mets' Sean Manaea activated, set for season debut

July 13 - The New York Mets on Sunday reinstated Sean Manaea from the 60-day injured list, making him available out of the bullpen for his first MLB action of the season in an afternoon contest with the Royals in Kansas City. In his most recent rehab appearance, Manaea tossed 73 pitches over 3 2/3 innings on Tuesday. Manaea, who went 12-6 with a 3.47 ERA over 32 appearances, all starts, for the Mets in 2024, is expected to work as a starter again following the All-Star break. A 9-year veteran with stops with the Athletics (2016-21), San Diego Padres (2022), San Francisco Giants (2023) and Mets, Manaea has a career ERA of 4.00 over 228 appearances (198 starts) with 1,109 strikeouts and three shutouts. --Field Level Media

Direct train from LA to NYC to 'open next year' ahead of FIFA World Cup and will make journey faster than ever

A proposed high-speed rail line could soon connect Los Angeles to New York City in under 72 hours, with operations potentially launching in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup - and America's 250th anniversary. The proposal comes from AmeriStarRail, a Delaware-based transportation company, which submitted a detailed plan to Amtrak outlining the 'Transcontinental Chief' - a long-distance rail service that would repurpose existing Amtrak routes and infrastructure. The train would travel through major cities including Kansas City, Chicago, and Philadelphia, while also offering views of the Grand Canyon. Unlike traditional high-speed rail initiatives that require extensive new infrastructure, AmeriStarRail's groundbreaking proposal would utilize Amtrak's current fleet of coaches, sleepers, and dining cars, along with host railroads like BNSF, Norfolk Southern and New Jersey Transit. The high-speed rail line is not only designed to carry passengers, but also vehicles, buses, and even long-haul trucks. The proposed service plans to blend elements of Europe's truck transport trains with U.S. passenger rail operations, offering vehicle-boarding for truckers and travelers along with Amtrak-style accommodations and amenities. Different than other recently proposed plans to upgrade U.S. transit, the AmeriStarRail's proposal emphasizes that the 'Transcontinental Chief' project would be privately funded, requiring no new federal appropriations or legislation. 'The Transcontinental Chief will be a great opportunity for Amtrak to team up with the private sector to confront the challenges of its money-losing long-distance trains and create opportunities to usher in a profitable Golden Age of rail travel for passengers and truckers, with the ingenuity of free enterprise, as we celebrate our great nation's 250th birthday next year,' AmeriStarRail COO Scott Spencer said in the proposal submitted to Amtrak. 'AmeriStarRail's proposal to turn Amtrak's money-losing long-distance trains into profit makers has also been shared with President Trump, DOGE, USDOT Secretary Sean Duffy, the FRA and Members of Congress,' a spokesperson for AmeriStarRail said. According to the company, the service could begin by May 10, 2026 - just weeks before the U.S. co-hosts the World Cup and marks its semiquincentennial. 'Subject to operating agreements with the host railroads (BNSF, Norfolk Southern and New Jersey Transit) the Transcontinental Chief can start operations on National Train Day, Sunday, May 10, 2026 to begin serving tourists for America 250 celebrations and the 2026 FIFA World Cup,' the private rail company spokesperson added. AmeriStarRail argues the plan offers a path toward expanding high-speed rail in the U.S. without the delays and costs associated with entirely new infrastructure. However, the project hinges on Amtrak's cooperation and requires agreements with multiple host railroads. There are also operational challenges, including right-of-way access, scheduling, and safety protocols. Amtrak has yet to respond to the proposal. While the proposal is still in early stages, it adds to growing momentum for enhanced passenger rail in the U.S., including Brightline's West Coast expansion and ongoing developments in California's high-speed rail system. With the clock ticking toward 2026, AmeriStarRail hopes its transcontinental train can move from concept to track - delivering a new era of cross-country travel just in time for a historic year.
