Mining company resurrects ancient technology to operate next-gen cargo ship: 'An exciting landmark project'
Sohar Max is an ore hauler owned by the Omani shipping group Asyad and is operated by the Brazilian mining company Vale. Fuel consumption on the carrier is expected to be reduced by up to 6% thanks to the new sails, which amounts to cutting emissions by up to 3,300 tons annually.
"Since 2010, Vale has been operating with highly efficient ships and, in recent years, has fostered initiatives for the adoption of wind energy, which will play a central role in the decarbonization of maritime transport of iron ore," said Rodrigo Bermelho, Vale's Director of Shipping in the announcement.
"This project reinforces this tradition of Vale's shipping area of investing in innovation and stimulating the modernization of the fleet to reduce emissions, in partnership with shipowners."
Many of the minerals Vale is moving are vital to battery production, which we need to electrify the grid and our vehicles. U.K.-based Anemoi handled the sail design and installation.
"This is an exciting landmark project for Anemoi, and wind propulsion in general, as it demonstrates the significant impact wind energy has on even the largest vessels," said Nick Contopoulos, Chief Production & Partnerships Officer of Anemoi Marine Technologies.
"Installing our Rotor Sails on this scale is a proud moment, showcasing our award-winning technology on another ore carrier. We are thrilled to be a part of Vale and Asyad's ongoing sustainability plans and to support their efforts in driving decarbonization across the maritime industry."
Boat shipping is already one of the more emission-efficient modes available, but it's great to see incremental improvements.
Some cargo ships have been able to operate purely on wind power, while other companies are upgrading their entire fleet with rotor sails. Swapping cargo ships over to hydrogen fuel could help bring those emissions further.

Besides reducing pollution, companies also get to save a pretty penny on fuel costs associated with ships this size by making sustainable retrofits. That means manufacturers can afford to be more competitive in pricing the goods they sell to you.
Anemoi and Vale expect to launch another similar rotor sail retrofit in September 2025.

Food costs remain high—and could rise further with tariffs
Even with no overall increase in food prices last month, Americans are still paying more for tariff-sensitive staples like coffee, sugar and bananas — and new import taxes could soon push those costs even higher. Food prices were unchanged from June to July but remained 2.9% higher than a year ago, above the Federal Reserve's target inflation rate of 2%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' consumer price index report released Wednesday. Food costs are among the most volatile parts of household budgets, shifting quickly due to weather events, disease outbreaks and global supply disruptions — all trends that have played out and boosted prices over the past year. Droughts in the Great Plains have increased feed prices and shrunk cattle herds, pushing up beef costs. Heat and drought in Brazil and Vietnam have reduced coffee harvests. Another wave of avian flu in the U.S. has cut into egg-laying flocks. And poor sugar harvests in India and Thailand have tightened supplies, contributing to higher candy and sweets prices. "These shocks often appear suddenly and ripple through the supply chain, leading to double-digit increases in certain items even when the overall food index is relatively stable," Mario Macis, professor of economics at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, tells CNBC Make It. Here are some of the biggest year-over-year price changes in key food categories, based on July's CPI data: "Even if overall food prices are flat for a month, consumers notice increases in key staples they buy frequently, like beef, eggs or coffee," says Macis. And while not all food prices are rising as quickly, people are still feeling the pinch from cumulative food price inflation. Since 2020, food costs have increased 26%, per CPI's data. "The level of inflation has slowed from the peaks of two years ago, but food prices remain high compared to before the pandemic," says Chedly Louis, vice president of corporate finance at Moody's Ratings, who covers several major grocery retailers. Just over half of Americans say grocery prices are a major source of stress, making it the most commonly cited financial worry in a July poll from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Some of the same goods seeing the biggest price increases in the past year could become even more expensive under new U.S. tariffs. About 75% of food products imported into the U.S. already face import duties, with many rates in the 10% to 30% range, according to the Tax Foundation. Since Aug. 6, 2025, Brazilian coffee has been subject to a 50% tariff, for example — a cost U.S. roasters are likely to pass on, the Tax Foundation says. "Coffee beans are almost entirely imported, so a tariff would directly raise costs for roasters," that would be passed on to consumers, says Macis. "Even tariffs on non-food items, like packaging materials, can push up retail food prices indirectly." That said, since many tariffs have only recently taken effect or are delayed, the full impact on grocery costs isn't yet clear and may not yet be reflected in BLS data. Most agricultural products imported into the U.S generally have zero tariffs under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which could help limit the impact on trade with Canada and Mexico even as other imports face higher duties, says Louis. "It's too early to quantify the risk because the tariff story is still evolving," Louis said. "We might see more of an impact toward the end of the year, especially during the holiday period when demand [for groceries] is higher."

Coffee Prices Fall Back as 3-Session Rally Stalls
September arabica coffee (KCU25) on Tuesday closed down -5.55 (-1.73%), and September ICE robusta coffee (RMU25) closed down -1 (-0.03%). NY coffee prices traded lower on Tuesday on some long liquidation pressure after initially extending Monday's rally to a 1.75-month high. Coffee prices rallied starting last Wednesday when Brazil's Trade Ministry reported that Brazil's July unroasted coffee exports fell -20.4% y/y to 161,000 MT. A decline in ICE coffee inventories is supporting arabica prices, as ICE-monitored arabica inventories fell to a 14.75-month low of 737,526 bags Tuesday. Also, ICE robusta coffee inventories fell to a 2-week low Monday of 6,976 lots after climbing to a 1-year high of 7,029 lots on July 28. The coffee market is awaiting clarity on US tariff policies, as President Trump has yet to exempt coffee from his 50% tariff on Brazilian exports. The tariff could hurt sales of Brazilian coffee to the US and boost Brazil's coffee inventories. Above-average rainfall in Brazil eases dryness concerns and is a negative factor for coffee prices. Somar Meteorologia reported Monday that Brazil's largest arabica coffee-growing area, Minas Gerais, received 4.8 mm of rain during the week ended August 9, or 109% of the historical average. The ongoing Brazil coffee harvest is bearish for coffee prices. Safras & Mercado reported last Friday that Brazil's overall 2025/26 coffee harvest was 94% complete as of August 6, ahead of the comparable level of 92% last year. The breakdown showed that 99% of the robusta harvest and 91% of the arabica harvest were complete as of August 6. In related news, Brazil's Cooxupe coffee co-op announced last Tuesday that the harvest among its members was 74% complete as of August 1. Cooxupe is Brazil's largest coffee cooperative and Brazil's largest exporter group. In a bearish factor, the International Coffee Organization (ICO) reported last Wednesday that global June coffee exports rose +7.3% y/y to 11.69 million bags. However, cumulative Oct-Jun coffee exports were down -0.2% y/y at 104.14 million bags. Coffee prices have retreated over the past three months on the outlook for abundant coffee supplies. Last month, arabica coffee tumbled to an 8-month low and robusta sank to a 1.25-year nearest-futures low. On June 25, the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) forecasted that Brazil's 2025/26 coffee production will increase by +0.5% y/y to 65 million bags and that Vietnam's 2025/26 coffee output will rise by 6.9% y/y to a 4-year high of 31 million bags. Brazil is the world's largest producer of arabica coffee, and Vietnam is the world's largest producer of robusta coffee. Smaller coffee exports from Brazil are positive for prices after Cecafe reported on July 16 that Brazil's total June green coffee exports fell -31% y/y to 2.3 million bags, with arabica exports down -27% y/y to 1.8 million bags and robusta exports down -42% y/y to 476,334 bags. Due to drought, Vietnam's coffee production in the 2023/24 crop year decreased by -20% y/y to 1.472 MMT, the smallest crop in four years. Also, Vietnam's General Statistics Office reported that 2024 Vietnam coffee exports fell by -17.1% y/y to 1.35 MMT. Additionally, the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association reduced its 2024/25 Vietnam coffee production estimate to 26.5 million bags on March 12, down from a December estimate of 28 million bags. By contrast, the Vietnam National Statistics Office reported Tuesday that Vietnam's Jan-Jul 2025 coffee exports were up +6.9% y/y to 1.05 MMT. The USDA's biannual report, released on June 25, was bearish for coffee prices. The USDA's Foreign Agriculture Service (FAS) projected that world coffee production in 2025/26 will increase by +2.5% y/y to a record 178.68 million bags, with a -1.7% decrease in arabica production to 97.022 million bags and a +7.9% increase in robusta production to 81.658 million bags. The USDA's FAS forecasts that 2025/26 ending stocks will climb by +4.9% to 22.819 million bags from 21.752 million bags in 2024/25. For the 2025/26 marketing year, Volcafe projects a global 2025/26 arabica coffee deficit of -8.5 million bags, wider than the -5.5 million bag deficit for 2024/25 and the fifth consecutive year of deficits. Brazil's Samarco gets court approval to exit bankruptcy proceedings
SAO PAULO (Reuters) -Brazilian miner Samarco, a joint venture between Vale and BHP, has received approval from a court in Minas Gerais state to exit bankruptcy protection proceedings, it said in a statement on Tuesday. The process allowed Samarco to reorganize more than 50 billion reais ($9.28 billion) in liabilities involving around 10,000 creditors, the statement said. The proceedings were triggered by a 2015 dam collapse near the Brazilian city of Mariana which halted operations for several years. ($1 = 5.3896 reais)
