Shed collapses at Andhra's Simhachalam temple, none hurt

VISAKHAPATNAM: A temporary shed under construction near Tholipavancha along the Giri Pradakshina route at The Simhachalam Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple experienced a collapse on Saturday, occurring just days before the annual Giri Pradakshina set for July 9. Thankfully, there were no injuries since no devotees were present at the time. Officials indicated that the shed fell during preparation activities. Witnesses reported that the structure failed due to inadequate support unable to sustain the weight of iron sheets. Visakhapatnam District Collector MN Harendhira Prasad, during a press conference at the Collectorate, stated, 'The sheds are being constructed for the upcoming Giri Pradakshina. One of the sheds slipped while workers were securing it.' When questioned about the safety protocols and the contractor responsible, the Collector replied, 'All details concerning the incident, including the contractor involved and the safety measures implemented, will be thoroughly investigated.' Authorities have been instructed to examine and assess all temporary structures to prevent similar incidents during the festival, which attracts lakhs of pilgrims each year. This incident follows a previous safety issue at the temple during Chandanotsavam, where a section of a wall collapsed, resulting in the death of eight devotees. The successive mishaps have raised concerns about the safety standards for large religious gatherings.

Neglect of elderly attracts punishment

Ongole: Prakasam District Revenue Officer B Chinna Obulesu emphasised that elderly people are 'treasure troves of experience' for society, and they should be cared for. Obulesu addressed the district officials as the chief guest at a special awareness programme on 'Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007' and State Rules 2011, organised by the Department of Disabled, Transgenders and Elderly Welfare in collaboration with the Regional Resource Training Centre at the Collectorate here on Wednesday. Speaking at the programme, DRO Obulesu highlighted growing concerns about elderly neglect, noting that grievance programmes frequently receive complaints about children taking their parents' property while abandoning their care responsibilities. He condemned this social trend as unacceptable. Taking care of elderly parents is everyone's responsibility, Obulesu stated, emphasising that neglecting their maintenance and protection is not only morally wrong but also legally punishable under existing laws. The DRO urged all district officials to develop a comprehensive understanding of relevant legislation and advised them to inform elderly victims about their legal rights while bringing cases to the attention of the elderly welfare department. The programme was attended by Disabled Welfare Department Assistant Director Suvartha, Ongole RDO Lakshmi Prasanna, DMHO Venkateswarlu, Senior Citizens Association President M Nageswara Rao, Regional Resource Training Centre representatives, and various departmental district officials.

Call for coordinated efforts to end human trafficking

Ongole: Prakasam district collector A Thamim Ansariya emphasised the need for coordinated efforts between government agencies and non-governmental organisations to combat the sustained organised crime, human trafficking. Observing the 'World Day Against Trafficking in Persons' at the Collectorate here on Wednesday, Collector Ansariya and Project Director of HELP NGO BV Sagar unveiled awareness posters on human trafficking. The posters carry the central message that 'every police officer, lawyer, and social worker has a responsibility to work together to stop illegal trafficking.' The campaign advocates for enhanced use of technology in law enforcement, improved coordination between districts, states, countries, and agencies, and disrupting criminal networks through monitoring of financial transactions. Speaking on the occasion, Collector Ansariya highlighted the critical role being played by Andhra Pradesh's judicial and police systems in addressing human trafficking. She stressed that the issue extends beyond social problems, characterising it as large-scale organised criminal activity requiring strict legal measures and intelligence-based investigations. The collector emphasised the importance of implementing strict laws against trafficking, conducting intelligence-based investigations, and arresting the accused. She called for society-wide cooperation in the anti-trafficking mission, including support from victims themselves. She emphasised that preventing trafficking is only part of the solution, noting the importance of ensuring victims receive their rights, dignity, compensation, psychological treatment, and rehabilitation without delay. Sagar explained that their organisation, HELP NGO, continues working to build public awareness as part of efforts to create a trafficking-free society in Andhra Pradesh. HELP representatives M Murali Krishna and Sk Mastan Vali also participated in the programme.
