Govt launches UMEED portal, Rijiju says it'll add new chapter in history of Waqf property management
The government has launched the UMEED portal, a digital platform for managing Waqf properties, aimed at improving transparency and efficiency. The government on Friday launched the UMEED portal that would create a digital inventory after geo-tagging of all Waqf properties with Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju calling it a historic step that would ensure that community-owned Waqf assets are utilised effectively and fairly for poor Muslims.The UMEED central portal, short for Unified Waqf Management , Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act, 1995 will serve as a centralised digital platform for real-time uploading, verification, and monitoring of Waqf properties."The UMEED portal will add a new chapter in the history of Waqf property management and administration in India. It will not only bring transparency but will also help the common Muslims, particularly women and children," Rijiju said after launching the UMEED central portal.The portal, developed by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, was officially inaugurated in the presence of Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian.Calling it a historic step, Rijiju emphasised that the UMEED central portal is more than just a technological upgrade."It is a symbol of the government's firm commitment to safeguarding the rights of minority communities and ensuring that community-owned Waqf assets are utilised effectively and fairly, for the poor Muslims, for whom, it was originally meant," he said.Later, in a post on X, he said, "A momentous occasion to launch the 'UMEED' Central Portal (Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency & Development Act, 1995) in New Delhi today. It's a big step towards better administration & management of Waqf properties across India."The portal aims to improve greater transparency, accountability, and public participation. The key features of the portal include the creation of a digital inventory with geo-tagging of all Waqf properties.It also includes an online grievance redressal system for better responsiveness and transparent leasing and usage tracking.The portal also involves integration with GIS mapping and other e-governance tools and public access to verified records and reports.Addressing the gathering, Kurian said the portal is a long-awaited reform that will curb misuse and bring the Waqf administration closer to the people."The system ensures that every property is accounted for and used in accordance with the purpose it was endowed for," he said.Ministry of Minority Affairs Secretary Chandra Shekhar Kumar said he expected the UMEED portal to become the backbone of digital Waqf governance, thereby ensuring that the Waqf assets contribute meaningfully to education, healthcare, livelihood generation and social welfare, especially for underprivileged sections within the Muslim community.Earlier this week, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board had opposed the launch of the portal in view of the petitions against the Waqf (Amendment) Act being pending before the Supreme Court.President of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani said the new Waqf law introduced by the government is currently under consideration in the Supreme Court and added that all Muslim organisations have rejected it."Opposition parties, human rights organisations, as well as Sikh, Christian, and other minority communities have also declared it unacceptable. However, it is unfortunate that despite this, the government is launching the "Waqf Umeed portal" from June 6 and is making the registration of waqf properties mandatory through it. This action is entirely illegal and clearly constitutes contempt of court," the AIMPLB had said in its statement.

Iran on Saturday lambasted US President Donald Trump's travel ban on countries, including Iran, and said that it showed "deep hostility" towards Iranians and Muslims. Iran's foreign ministry posted a statement on X quoting a senior official and said, "The decision to ban the entry of Iranian nationals - merely due to their religion and nationality - not only indicates the deep hostility of American decision-makers towards the Iranian people and Muslims but also violates... international law." Separately, Iran on Saturday slammed the new sanctions imposed by the United States targeting over 30 individuals and entities that Washington said are part of a "shadow banking" network linked to Tehran. It said that the network has laundered billions of dollars through the global financial system. "The new U.S. sanctions ..., are illegal and violate international law, and are further evidence of the deep and continuing hostility of the U.S. ruling regime towards the Iranian people," foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said in a statement, Reuters reported. Earlier on Wednesday, Trump issued a full-entry travel ban on nationals from 12 countries, including Afghanistan, Burma (Myanmar), Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. Meanwhile, partial restrictions will also be enforced on Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela, limiting immigrant and non-immigrant visas due to high overstay rates or insufficient collaboration between law enforcement. The travel ban was justified by the White House, which cited Taliban control in Afghanistan, Iran and Cuba's state-sponsored terrorism, and Haiti's influx of illegal migrants during the Biden regime. Additionally, countries like Chad (49.54% B1/B2 visa overstay rate) and Eritrea (55.43% F/M/J overstay rate) were flagged for disregarding US immigration laws. 'We will restore the travel ban, some people call it the Trump travel ban, and keep the radical Islamic terrorists out of our country that was upheld by the Supreme Court," Trump had said. The travel ban was also upheld by the Supreme Court which ruled that 'it is squarely within the scope of Presidential authority' and noted that it is 'expressly premised on legitimate purposes'.

Berlin [Germany], June 8 (ANI): Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi has said that India's Armed Forces have given a befitting reply to those who have cast an evil eye on the country and that there will be a firm response to any terror attack. Priyanka Chaturvedi, who is a member of an all-party delegation visiting partner countries to highlight India's zero tolerance policy against terrorism, told members of the Indian diaspora in Germany that India gave a firm response to the Pahalgam terror attack through Operation Sindoor. 'Our armed forces gave a befitting reply to those who have time and again attacked our country . Our response has been mature, responsible,' she said. 'We are the land of Mahatma, we are the land of Buddha, but we are also the land of Krishna,' she added. She said the terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir was targeted in Operation Sindoor. She said India was, in a way, carrying out the work of the UN, by targeting terror camps. Priyanka Chaturvedi also took a jibe at Pakistan getting a position to serve as vice-chair of the Counter-Terrorism Committee of the United Nations. 'Do you know what responsibility they got? They have gotten the vice-chairmanship of the Counter-Terrorism Committee. This is like asking Masood Azhar and Hafeez Saeed to fight for global peace and justice. We have to call this out. Not only India but the entire world is suffering. From Masood Azhar to Osama Bin Laden - all have been found there (Pakistan). Srinagar's Jamia Masjid locked on Eid, Mirwaiz detained
SRINAGAR: Srinagar's historic Jamia Masjid was locked and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq placed under house arrest Saturday on Eid-ul-Adha, denying devotees the opportunity to offer prayers and provoking a backlash from many, including CM Omar Abdullah. Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid Srinagar, which looks after the mosque management, said the gates were closed early Saturday morning and police deployed outside. Mirwaiz and Hurriyat Conference chairman Umar Farooq's family has traditionally led prayers at the mosque for generations. 'It is deeply regrettable that once again, people were not allowed to offer Eid prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid,' Omar said. He expressed helplessness, saying law and order in J&K Union territory fell under the purview of lieutenant governor (LG) Manoj Sinha's administration. 'I have no idea on what grounds such decisions are made,' the CM said. Omar urged the authorities to trust J&K's residents, saying 'these are the same people who, after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, came forward and unequivocally condemned it'. The CM called on 'the govt' to reconsider such actions in the future, alluding probably to the administration of the Centre-appointed LG.
