Tickets go on sale soon for 'Wicked' show at BJCC Concert Hall in Birmingham

Yahoo23-05-2025

You can still be with the Wizard, and Elphaba, Glinda, Fiyero and flying monkeys, when tickets go on sale May 30 for the Broadway touring company of "Wicked," which will return for 24 performances at the BJCC Concert Hall on Sept. 3-21.
Previous tours have been among the best-selling in the BJCC's long-running Broadway in Birmingham series ― the 2016 "Wicked" run sold 40,000 seats ― so tickets are expected to go fast.
It's one of history's most-popular musicals, with its ubiquity only growing from the long-awaited part one of a film adaptation, released in November 2024. That "Wicked" won a basketful of Oscars, BAFTAs, Golden Globe, Critics Circle and other awards, and set a Guinness world record for highest-grossing movie based on a stage show.
Its worldwide box office gross is currently $$755,785,657. The concluding part two is expected to reach cinemas Nov. 21.

The musical version of Gregory Maguire's best-selling revisionist novel, based on L. Frank Baum's Oz tales, became one of Broadway's greatest success stories. It's currently in its 22nd year on the Great White Way, making it fourth-longest-running in Broadway history, behind only "The Phantom of the Opera," the 1996 revival of "Chicago," and "The Lion King." "Phantom" closed in spring 2023, but the other three contenders are still running.
The 2003 musical won three Tonys, seven Drama Desk awards, and a Grammy for its original cast album, which featured Idina Menzel as Elphaba, Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda/Galinda, Norbert Leo Butz as Fiyero (Butz is a graduate of the University of Alabama's master of fine arts acting program; UA theater grad and Tuscaloosan Jake Boyd played Fiyero on national tours, including the production that played the BJCC in 2016), and Joel Grey as the Wizard.
Menzel and Chenoweth made cameo appearances in the movie, as did composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz and original book writer Winnie Holzman, who also co-wrote the paired films' screenplays.
"Wicked" has played 16 countries around the world, translated into six languages, and been seen live by more than 70 million people, racking up more than $6 billion in ticket sales.
Tickets for the BJCC performances cost $81.60 and up, and will be available beginning at 10 a.m. May 30, through www.ticketmaster.com, www.bjcc.org, or through www.broadwayinbirmingham.com. For group-rate tickets of 10 or more, email groups@atguild.org.
Performances of the Sept. 3-21 BJCC run will be 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturdays, and 1 and 6:30 p.m. Sundays. There'll be an added 2 p.m. matinee on Sept. 4.
The musical "Wicked: The Untold Stories of the Witches of Oz" was patterend from Maguire's novel "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West," with events taking place around those known from the landmark 1939 "The Wizard of Oz" film, and Baum's 1900 novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz."
Schwartz and Holzman made numerous changes to streamline Maguire's densely plotted book, and to fit the story to the stage. "Wicked" tracks Elphaba Thropp (a name Maguire invented based on a phonetic reading of Baum's initials, L.F.B.) with her college roommate Galinda (later Glinda) Upland, as the odd couple navigate magical training, a burgeoning friendship, and violent prejudice against the emerald-skinned, and others who differ from the norm.
They first revere but later oppose an oppressive wizard, though the friends pursue different destinies: one is very good at what she does; the other is considered good because of how she appears.
Lofted by hit songs including "Defying Gravity," "For Good" and "Popular," the 2003 Broadway musical soared at the box office. Despite pans from The New York Times, Newsday, Hollywood Reporter and others, some critics gave it mixed notes, mostly praising its stars, while others loved it unreservedly. Elysa Gardner of USA Today wrote that "Wicked" was "...the most complete, and completely satisfying, new musical I've come across in a long time."

Lionsgate Head Says AI Can Recut Films for Kids, Create Anime Adaptations, and Save Millions... In Just Hours — GeekTyrant

In a recent interview with New York Magazine, Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns opened up on how the studio is starting to experiment with AI, and if what he's saying holds up, it's a glimpse into a very weird (and very real) future for filmmaking. Last September, Lionsgate inked a deal with AI startup Runway, the same company behind several high-profile generative video tools, making it the first major Hollywood studio to partner directly with the tech firm. Burns says the goal is simple: 'make movies and television shows we'd otherwise never make.' 'We can't make it for $100 million, but we'd make it for $50 million because of AI,' he explained. 'We're banging around the art of the possible. Let's try some stuff, see what sticks.' And what 'sticks' could mean anything, from lowering costs to transforming entire franchises for entirely different audiences. Some of the more interesting examples is taking a gritty, R-rated film and repackaging it for kids and turning a film into an anime. 'Now we can say, 'Do it in anime, make it PG-13.' Three hours later, I'll have the movie,' Burns said. 'But I can do that, and now I can resell it.' A full reworking of a major film, adjusted in tone, format, and rating, done in mere hours with AI. It's not just science fiction anymore, this is now a business model. Lionsgate, which holds the rights to massive properties like John Wick and The Hunger Games , now has the option to rework its library for different audiences with just a few tweaks. New York Magazine noted, 'With a library as large as Lionsgate's, they could use Runway to repackage and resell what the studio already owned.' Burns even cited a more grounded, behind-the-scenes example of how this could impact production: 'We have this movie we're trying to decide whether to green-light. There's a 10-second shot — 10,000 soldiers on a hillside with a bunch of horses in a snowstorm.' In the past, shooting that scene would cost millions and take days. Now? AI could generate the shot for about $10,000. Of course, Burns did clarify that AI doesn't erase everyone from the picture. 'I still have to pay the actors and all other rights participants,' he said. 'But I can do that.' So while the creative implications are still a giant question mark, the business play is clea… faster production, lower costs, and endless remix potential. What comes next? We're all about to find out. This is wild, but its the future. The ball is rolling and there's no stopping it.

Michael Rosenbaum Confirms Secret Role in James Gunn's SUPERMAN — GeekTyrant

Michael Rosenbaum the actor who played the fan-favorite Lex Luthor from Smallville just revealed he is part of James Gunn's upcoming Superman reboot… but maybe not in the way people expected. During a panel at Fan Expo Dallas, Rosenbaum said that he's recorded a 'fun' little voice role for the film. 'James asked me to do something fun, so I have a couple of lines that I voice,' he said. 'There was nothing in this one, but he's the head of DC, so I think he can stick me in a movie or something.' So, no major character reveal, but there is a mysterious voice role, which could likely one of the robot companions at Superman's Fortress of Solitude, where Gunn has already confirmed Alan Tudyk and Michael Rooker are lending their talents. Rosenbaum, of course, is no stranger to voice work. He famously brought Wally West's Flash to life in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited , and has stayed close with Gunn over the years, appearing as crystal-skinned Martinex in all three Guardians of the Galaxy films. With Gunn now running the show at DC, It makes sense that he'd want to bring Rosenbuam along for the ride in anyway that he can. This character he plays in Superman may not be a big role, but maybe Gunn's got something more exciting planned for the actor somewhere down the line. When asked why he wasn't doing more in Superman, Rosenberg said: 'Why am I not in Superman? Why am I not in the movie somehow?' he recalled asking Gunn. But he's not bitter about it, just realistic. 'Whatever comes to me, I look at it, and if it's not too silly, or if it makes me laugh, or I think I could do a really good job, or I think I can make an impression, I'll do it.' Superman hits theaters on Rosenbaum's birthday, July 11, 2025, a fitting gift from one of his best friend. 'He's one of my best friends, and he's very loyal. I think he's got a great vision,' Rosenbaum said of Gunn. Even Smallville's Clark Kent, Tom Welling, chimed in with some love: 'Once (Michael) gets involved, it's better.'

Here's how to buy a Nintendo Switch 2 at launch

The Switch 2 has finally arrived — well, at least in some parts of the world. Nintendo's latest console officially launches in the US tomorrow, June 5th, bringing with it more processing power, a larger 7.9-inch LCD display, and an all-new racing title in the form of Mario Kart World. Preorders for the $449 hybrid console remain sold out; however, if you're looking to grab one on launch day, rest assured that a handful of retailers have announced availability, both in-store and online. So far, Walmart, GameStop, Best Buy, and Target have all confirmed that they will have limited console stock on Thursday, June 5th. The same retailers will also offer the new Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, the Switch 2 camera, first-party carrying cases, and other accessories that are set to launch alongside the console later this week. We'll be publishing a ton of Switch-related coverage in the coming days — including our full Switch 2 review —but in the meantime, we've rounded up all the details you need to know if you want to attempt to secure a console on day one. After all, there's no telling what post-launch availability will be like, despite Nintendo's attempts to build up an inventory of its next-gen portable system to meet demand. Retailer landing pages Walmart Walmart customers will be able to snag a Nintendo Switch 2 at Walmart Supercenters starting on June 5th at 12AM ET / June 4th at 9PM PT, while supplies last. Online orders will open at the same time, with stock subject to availability. Walmart has confirmed its launch day slate will include the standalone Switch 2 ($449) and the Mario Kart World bundle ($499), along with games and the following accessories: Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller ($84) Nintendo Switch 2 Camera ($54) Hori's Piranha Plant Camera ($59) Joy-Con 2 Wheel Set ($24.88) Nintendo Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector ($39.88) Nintendo Switch 2 All-In-One Carrying Case ($84) Samsung's 256GB microSD Express Card ($59) GameStop GameStop will have additional Switch 2 stock available both in-store and online when the console launches on June 5th. In-store launch events will kick off at 3PM local time on June 4th, with in-store pickups beginning on June 5th at 12AM EST / June 4th at 9PM PST. Online orders will also open on June 5th at 12AM ET/ June 4th at 9PM PT, according to GameStop spokesperson Nicolle Robles. GameStop hasn't detailed which console configurations will be available at launch, but we can assume the retailer will offer both the standalone console ($449.99) and the Mario Kart World bundle ($499.99), as well as games like Mario Kart World ($79.99) and Switch 2 version of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom ($79.99). We can also anticipate GameStop offering the following accessories: Best Buy As detailed on Best Buy's landing page for the Switch 2, 'most stores will have a limited inventory of systems, games, and accessories for in-store purchase' beginning on June 5th at 12:01AM ET / June 4th at 9:01PM PT. Best Buy has stipulated that it anticipates people lining up ahead of the console's midnight release, including those who previously preordered the standalone console ($449.99) or the Mario Kart World bundle ($499.99) and are showing up for in-store pickup. A number of Switch 2 games and accessories will also be available to purchase online at launch; however, the retailer has specified that it will not be opening online orders for the console itself during launch week. Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller ($84.99) Nintendo Switch 2 Camera ($54.99) Hori's Piranha Plant Camera ($59.99) Joy-Con 2 Wheel Set ($24.99) Nintendo Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector ($39.99) Nintendo Switch 2 All-In-One Carrying Case ($84.99) Samsung's 256GB microSD Express Card ($59.99) Target If you missed the initial preorder window, Target has confirmed that it will offer both the standalone Switch 2 ($449.99) and the Mario Kart World bundle ($499.99) in-store on launch day, with online orders opening in the 'early morning' on June 6th. Consoles will be limited to one per guest, and according to its FAQ, there will be a 'designated queuing location' for customers to line up before stores open on June 5th. Target employees will distribute physical or digital tickets either until all tickets have been claimed or 10 minutes prior to opening. If you do manage to obtain one, your console purchase is guaranteed. As expected, Target will offer 'additional software, amiibo and accessories' while supplies last. The retailer wasn't clear on which accessories will be available on June 5th, though based on preorder availability, we expect the following: Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller ($84.99) Nintendo Switch 2 Camera ($54.99) Hori's Piranha Plant Camera ($59.99) Joy-Con 2 Wheel Set ($24.99) Nintendo Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector ($39.99) Nintendo Switch 2 All-In-One Carrying Case ($84.99) Samsung's 256GB microSD Express Card ($59.99) Other retailers If you're not having any luck with the above retailers, there are a handful of alternatives that might have Switch 2 stock on June 5th. Costco, Staples, Sam's Club, Antonline, and Newegg are all expected to offer Nintendo's latest console online at some point or another, as evident by their respective landing pages for the Switch 2. There is no word on whether they will have in-store availability; however, Costco's website indicates that the console will be available for purchase starting on June 5th at an undisclosed price.
