Kerry seaside village gets exclusive boost to year-round tourism

Described as a 'best-in-class' outdoor tourism amenity, it promises to enhance the visitor experience at Fenit as a year-round tourist hub for outdoor activities that includes hot showers, changing rooms, toilets, secure storage, induction space, and equipment washdown areas.
The build includes full wheelchair access and the installation of solar heating panels, 'Changing Places' facilities and accessible toilet.
The Fenit Water Sports Activity Facility is one of 19 to be developed across 13 counties under the national scheme.
Welcoming the development was the Mayor of Tralee Cllr Mikey Sheehy who said the project will enhance the tourist experience at the popular seaside village.
'This investment in the infrastructure for outdoor activities and the wide range of water-based adventures that take place here is a huge positive. Funded by Kerry County Council and Failte Ireland under the Platforms for Growth Programme, it will extend the tourism season in Fenit to all year-round,' he said.
Fáilte Ireland said the project marks the beginning of a journey in developing a fantastic amenity that strengthens outdoor tourism.
'Kerry is renowned for its stunning landscapes, towering mountain peaks and its beautiful beaches, and Fenit is no exception,' said Fiona Monaghan, Head of Activities at Fáilte Ireland.
She added that Fenit beach and village are key assets along the Wild Atlantic Way with much potential to attract both international and domestic visitors.
'We look forward to working with Kerry County Council to develop this best-in-class Water Sports Facility that will benefit both visitors and the local community while helping extend the outdoor activity season in the area,' Ms Monaghan added.
The first Fáilte Ireland investment scheme of its kind, it specifically targets 'platforms' or projects that have the greatest potential to grow tourism across Ireland and strategically enhance the Irish tourism offering to meet visitor needs.

Wexford clothing company enjoys a ‘cúpla focail' with presidential candidate Catherine Connolly on Fleadh visit

That was certainly the case with one high-profile exponent of the Irish language, presidential hopeful Catherine Connolly, who dropped in for a browse and a chat with owners and best friends Gillian de Faoite and Nina Shelton. Mothers of autistic children, the Wexford women founded the company with the aim of making sensory-friendly clothing for both children and adults and, naturally, being Gaelgeoirí themselves, the Irish language certainly played a part in their cool and colourful designs. "We've had an incredibly successful Fleadh this year, connecting with people from all over the world who've flocked to our town for this brilliant event,' Gillian said. 'It truly puts Wexford on the map.' Nina and Gillian were particularly delighted to have a lengthy chat with Catherine Connolly (as Gaeilge) about their journey and hopes for the future. "A real highlight was being visited by Catherine Connolly,' Nina said. 'It was such a privilege to meet someone so genuine, who took a personal interest in our story and our brand. She immediately understood what we're trying to achieve and that we're so much more than a children's clothing company. At our core is a commitment to inclusivity, giving everyone a seat at the table.' Ms Connolly was suitably impressed by the award-winning Wexford business owners. "Her passion for the Irish language meant we enjoyed a beautiful, fluent conversation 'as Gaeilge', and we're deeply grateful for the generosity she showed us in both her time and her attention in what was surely a busy day.' A successful Fleadh is just one cause for celebration for Sully & Juno of late, as the business has also been selected by the European Commission as a 'Pioneer of Inclusivity' for 2024/25.

My favourite room: ‘Growing up gay in rural Ireland and being bullied is what I figured is at the root of my alcoholism' – inside Noel Cunningham's renovated childhood home

Broadcaster, hotelier and author Noel Cunningham spent many years living in luxury in plush hotels here and abroad, however he's delighted to make his base the house in Donegal where he grew up with his five siblings, now furnished in a riot of joyful colour Today at 00:30 Half doors used to be a common sight in the Irish countryside, and while they were designed for ventilation, an open half door also meant the occupants were at home and welcoming. So, it seems fitting that Noel Cunningham put a half door on his family cottage when he took it over nine years ago. Noel, the second most famous hotelier in Ireland after Francis Brennan, has spent his life welcoming people in his professional capacity as a hotel manager. He's worked in hospitality since his teens and he's spent many years with Jurys Doyle Hotels (now The Doyle Collection), Trust House Forte in England, then with Harvey's Point in Donegal. He retired some years ago but because he has such an engaging personality, colourful way of dressing and eloquent turn of phrase, he's been in demand ever since for TV, radio and charitable activities.
