Russia marks Naval Day with July Storm drills, Ukrainian drone attacks
Putin was speaking at St Petersburg – home to Russia's naval headquarters Admiralty – to mark Russia's Navy Day.
The day was marked with the culmination of 'July Storm' wargames in the seas and oceans instead of customary naval parades.
The main naval parade at St Petersburg was cancelled 'due to security issues, which are paramount," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
The 'July Storm' wargames were held amid massive Ukrainian drone attacks on Russia's towns and cities, including the St Petersburg, and closure of local Pulkovo International Airport, which diverted or rescheduled over 100 flights.
Addressing the naval personnel, President Putin said that in the 'current situation", referring to Moscow's Special Military Operation in Ukraine and NATO's backing of its Ukrainian proxy, it is more prudent to have war games and not the naval parades.
'The Russian Navy plays an enormous role in defending Russia's interests, sovereignty and security, which is a key task," he said.
He also announced that shortly, five Marine Corps brigades will be transformed into divisions, with two of them already this year. As a result, the Navy's strike power and combat capabilities will increase qualitatively.
The Russian Defence Ministry in a statement said that the 'exercise" involved over 15,000 naval personnel, more than 150 warships and vessels, 120 aircraft, 950 items of military and special hardware and 10 coastal defence missile systems.
According to local authorities, 'dozens of drones" were shot down without causing damage, except one which set ablaze private homes as a result of falling debris in one of the suburbs of St Petersburg. PTI VS NPK ZH NPK NPK

In one of the clearest demonstrations to date of how the West's approach to arming Ukraine against Russia is shifting under President Trump, four European countries are buying U.S. military equipment valued at roughly $1 billion for delivery to Kyiv's forces. The purchases, in two separate transactions coordinated by NATO, are expected to be the first of many funded by European governments and Canada following an agreement in principle earlier this summer. Trump has balked at providing U.S. weapons directly to Ukraine, as the Biden administration did, but he has signaled openness to selling the embattled country American arms. Trump and his senior officials have also said that Europe should shoulder more of the burden of supporting Ukraine because it is closer to them, and the U.S. is focused on China and the Pacific. The Netherlands on Monday agreed to the first $500 million purchase, and a consortium of Denmark, Sweden and Norway on Tuesday agreed to a similar purchase. BJP calls for boycott of Kamal Haasan's movies over ‘sanatana dharma' remarks
The Tamil Nadu BJP on Tuesday urged people to boycott movies featuring the actor-politician Kamal Haasan, in a response to his comments on 'sanatana dharma' made at a charity event held on Sunday. Veteran actor Kamal Haasan said that only education has the power to change the nation and it is the only weapon that can break the shackles of dictatorship and Sanatana. (PTI) BJP state secretary Amar Prasad Reddy posted a video message onto his social media accounts, wherein he said: 'Earlier it was Udhayanidhi Stalin. Now, it is Kamal who wants to destroy sanatana dharma. Let's teach them a lesson.' 'I appeal to every Hindu to not watch Kamal's movies, not even on OTT. If we do this, they will not share such irresponsible statements that hurt millions of Hindus on public platforms,' he added. At the event on Sunday organised by Agaram Foundation, a non-profit run by fellow Tamil actor Suriya, Kamal Haasan said: 'Only education has the power to change the nation. It is the only weapon that can break the shackles of dictatorship and Sanatana.' The actor was referring to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), which the ruling DMK wants abolished. Haasan also said that a central exam for medical admissions was a barrier for marginalised students. 'Do not take any other weapon in your hand. It isn't possible to win with any other weapon because ignorant majoritarianism will defeat you,' added Haasan, who recently became a member of the Rajya Sabha after being nominated by the DMK after his party Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) entered into an alliance with them ahead of the Lok Sabha elections last year. The controversy around the actor's comments recalled the row that erupted in 2023 around deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin's call for the eradication of sanatana dharma, wherein he said: 'Just like dengue, mosquitoes, malaria, or coronavirus need to be eradicated, we have to eradicate Sanatana.' Historically, the DMK has considered sanatana dharma to be a centuries-old issue which compounds caste and gender-based discrimination. This point has found itself echoed by the writings of BR Ambedkar. Haasan's former co-actor Khusboo Sundar, who was recently appointed vice president of the state BJP, said that Haasan's comments were unnecessary. 'I feel Kamal sir speaking at an event like this about education and bringing in Sanatana was absolutely uncalled for, unwanted,' Sundar told PTI. 'You could have just stressed on the importance of education because we all agree education is your biggest weapon. Speaking there about Sanatana was absolutely wrong because nobody is including education with Sanatana...,' he added. Haasan has not personally issued any response to the BJP's criticism, as of the time of going to print. Meanwhile, DMK spokesperson A Saravanan said that the entire right wing was enraged with Haasan's speech. 'Kamal Haasan has hit the bull's eye. They (the right wing) don't know how to react. They are not able to attack him and know his powers of amplification,' he said.

‘Do As We Say, Not As We Do'? EU Lectures India Over Russian Oil, But Trade Numbers Reveal A Story It Won't Say Out Loud
New Delhi: Europe's top leaders speak in strong voices against Russia, but behind closed doors and shipping docks, the numbers tell another story. In 2024, the European Union's total trade with Moscow reached $70.3 billion. It was nearly equal to India's $72 billion, despite the EU leading global calls for Russia's economic isolation. For months, India has faced pressure from Western capitals. It has been cast as one of Moscow's key post-war trade partners. But the EU's own engagement with Russia runs deep. It covers not only fuel, but chemicals, metals, food and machinery. India's trade with Russia last year leaned heavily on energy. Fuel shipments alone reached $59.5 billion, making up over 80% of its total trade volume. Meanwhile, Europe has reduced its oil imports (only $24.2 billion in 2024) but maintains high-volume transactions across other sectors. Chemical trade between the EU and Russia stood at $17.6 billion. It is over six times India's $3.1 billion. In metals, the EU clocked $6.7 billion, far exceeding India's $0.9 billion. The bloc also recorded $5 billion in food imports and $4.4 billion in machinery and electronics from Russia. Imports tell only half the story. The EU exported $34 billion worth of goods to Russia in 2024. That was over seven times India's $4.9 billion exports. Europe sent $14.6 billion in chemicals, $5 billion in food and $3.7 billion in machinery and electronics. The patterns are tangled even among critics across the Atlantic. The United States imported $3.8 billion worth of Russian goods in 2024, more than half of which was fertiliser and chemicals. From Ukraine, the country it supports militarily and diplomatically, the United States imported only $1.23 billion in goods. It was less than India's $1.48 billion from the war-torn country. Ukraine paid $1.69 billion for US exports, raising questions about balance and benefit in a time of conflict. US President Donald Trump has renewed his attack on India over its energy imports from Russia. 'India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits. They don't care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA,' Trump wrote on Truth Social. While global speeches focus on isolation, trade flows reveal a more complicated map. Between policy podiums and port-side manifests, Moscow's trade routes remain far from silent.
