Children orphaned after father killed in Air India plane crash days after mother dies

Sky News14-06-2025
A father returning home after scattering his wife's ashes was among the victims of the Air India crash, leaving his two young children suddenly orphaned.
Flight 171 was carrying 242 people when it struck a medical college hostel less than a minute after taking off from Ahmedabad airport, in western India.
Twenty-nine people on the ground were killed, taking the total number of victims to 270. A hospital official confirmed 270 bodies have been recovered from the crash site, but DNA testing is being conducted to identify the bodies.
Just one passenger, a British man from Leicester, survived what has become the worst aviation crash in a decade.
Among the victims, 37-year-old Arjun Patoliya had been visiting India to fulfil his wife Bharti's "final wish" to be laid to rest in her hometown of Gujarat.
Bharti had died just over two weeks ago, following a "courageous battle with cancer".
A GoFundMe page, set up to raise funds for their two children, says: "Arjun left to bid farewell to his wife, never returned to the children they both raised.
"Now, these two beautiful young girls have been left without parents - their world turned upside down in just over two weeks."
A fundraiser, which has topped more than a quarter of a million pounds, confirms all money raised will go directly into a legal trust, "to ensure every penny is dedicated to the girls' needs".

Black box has been found
India's aviation ministry says workers have recovered the digital flight data recorder - one of two black boxes on the plane, from the rooftop of the building where it crashed.
This box has data on engine and control settings, so will be able to show if there was a loss of engine power or lift after takeoff.
The investigation will initially focus on the engine, flaps and landing gear, a source told Reuters on Friday.
A possible bird-hit is not among the key areas of focus, the source said, adding that teams of anti-terror experts were part of the investigation process.
There is no information yet on the cockpit voice recorder, the other black box, which will be a crucial part of understanding what caused the plane to crash.
The country's civil aviation regulator has ordered Air India to do additional maintenance and enhanced safety inspections of its Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft equipped with General Electric's GEnx engines.

Boy, 4, said four haunting words as he left hospital before he was hit by bus

Zaahir Jan, four, died after being hit by a bus outside outside the NHS Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital - his heartbroken mum has revealed his four final words A mum has shared the tragic final words of her four-year-old son before he was hit by a bus while visiting his grandmother in hospital. ‌ Little Zaahir Jan was hit by a bus while crossing the road outside the NHS Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital in Margate, Kent, at around 4pm on Thursday. Emergency services rushed to the scene and Zaahir was taken to hospital, but he was sadly pronounced dead a short time later. Azaria Green, Zaahir's heartbroken mum, says the incident unfolded when he'd gone to the toilet holding his 10-year-old brother's hand while she waited in the car park with her sister. ‌ ‌ She explained that Zaahir went to the toilet and told his brother he was "going back to mum", before he ran across the road and was tragically struck. ‌ Azaria has now paid a moving tribute to her "best boy", who she says slept in her bed every night. She has so far been unable to go home because she can't bring herself to look at Zaahir's belongings. The mother, from Canterbury, Kent, said: "We were going to visit my mum. Me and my sister were in the car park and he went to the toilet with my sister's partner and the other kids. "He was holding his 10-year-old brothers hand and he went to the toilet. He said he was going to go back to mum. He was trying to come back to me and he ran in the road. ‌ "It was horrible. He was the strongest, bravest, happiest boy ever. He was so loving. He was so strong. I think I'm in shock. I don't know what's going to happen soon but I'm really not OK at the moment. He loved me so much. He was my best boy. "I haven't been able to go home because I can't look at his stuff and his toys and his iPad. He slept in my bed with me every single day and we used to cuddle before we slept and as soon as we'd wake up we cuddled and told each other we loved each other." ‌ Azaria has set up a GoFundMe page with a target of raising £15,000 to help cover the costs of his funeral. Over £9,000 has already been raised, and Azaria said: "The fundraiser has been set up to cover the costs of his funeral because I literally had nothing in my account. "I just want to give him the best that I can. He loved cars so much. I want to try and get him some flowers in the shape of cars." ‌ Kent Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit are investigating the incident and have since launched an appeal for information. A Kent Police spokesperson said: "Witnesses, CCTV and dashcam footage are sought by officers investigating a fatal collision in Margate. ‌ "Kent Police was called to Ramsgate Road shortly after 4pm on Thursday August 7 following a report of an incident involving a bus and a pedestrian outside Queen Elizabeth Queen Margaret Hospital. "The bus, a white single decker vehicle, was travelling near the entrance to the A&E department. It is reported that the pedestrian, a four-year-old boy, left the hospital on foot and a collision took place. "The child was taken inside the hospital and a short while later was sadly confirmed deceased. His next of kin has been informed. "Investigators from Kent Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward. "Witnesses, including passengers travelling on the bus who have not yet spoken to police, should call 01622 798538 or email quoting reference KH//055/25." Tracey Fletcher, Chief Executive of East Kent Hospitals, said: "We are very saddened by the tragic incident and send our sincere condolences to the family."

‘Deport now, appeal later': Foreign criminals deported from UK in newly released Home Office footage

The Home Office has released footage of foreign criminals being deported from the UK to have their appeals heard from abroad. Video released by the government department on Monday (11 August) shows criminals being led from a coach into a plane to be taken back to their home countries. It comes as the Home Office adds 15 more countries - including Canada, India and Australia - to its 'deport now, appeal later' scheme. The policy allows the government to deport offenders who have had a human rights claim against their removal rejected, with any appeals heard from abroad via a video call.
