World's best coffee shop for 2025 named

CNN26-02-2025
It's official: Sydney has the world's best coffee shop.
At least that's what a new list ranking top cafés globally found, with the Australian city beating out perennial rival Melbourne for the top spot.
Sydney-based Toby's Estate Coffee Roasters was crowned the best coffee shop in the world, followed by Onyx Coffee Lab of Arkansas, Gota Coffee Experts of Vienna, Austria, Proud Mary Coffee of Melbourne and Tim Wendelboe of Oslo, Norway.
The top 10 coffee shops also hailed from Singapore, France, Malaysia and Colombia.
Cafés worldwide were judged on a variety of factors, ranging from quality of coffee and food, customer service, sustainability practices to customer service, according to the ranking's website. Both public opinions and experts' evaluation were taken into account to reach the final selection, according to the 'World's 100 Best Coffee Shops.'
Jody Leslie, general manager for Toby's Estate, told CNN Travel that her whole team was 'completely stoked' when they learned about the result.
'We've been in the coffee game a long time and we know what we do is amazing and we try very hard to be consistent and so to be recognized like this is just amazing,' she said.
Its flagship shop, located in Sydney's southwest Chippendale neighborhood, earned the recognition, but it has branches across Australia and Asia, including Singapore, Indonesia and the Middle East.
Leslie said sales have surged since the announcement, attracting more visitors eager to try her team's coffee. To thank customers for their support, Toby's Estate will host a free coffee day on February 27.
The Toby's Estate flagship shop features a brew bar where coffee is made in front of customers and a roastery on-site, roasting fresh beans daily.
The coffee chain began in 1997, when lawyer Toby Smith started the business from his mother's garage in Woolloomooloo, a harborside eastern suburb of Sydney.
Arkansas-based Onyx Coffee Lab ranked second. The company has three branches in Bentonville, Fayetteville, and Springdale, but it wasn't clear which made the list. Vienna's Gota Coffee, ranked third, also took to social media to express gratitude for the recognition.
'We are honored to share this award with not only the top 100 shops around the world mentioned but all the cafes throughout the industry who get up each morning to offer the best hospitality and service to their guests,' Onyx Coffee Lab posted on its Instagram.
'This journey has been fueled by passion, precision, and the incredible support of our coffee-loving community,' Gota Coffee posted on its Instagram. 'Here's to pushing the boundaries of coffee culture, one brew at a time!'
Australia's second largest city ranks among the world's best for coffee, but there's something else Melburnians queue up for each morning. Related video
A must-have to start the morning in Melbourne. And it's not just coffee
Australia's cafe scene is famed for its cool vibes and the competitive spirit of baristas chasing the perfect brew.
Australian cafés have popped up in major cities worldwide, offering up avocado toast and flat whites — both of which originated in the country (though many New Zealanders dispute the flat white's origin).
Within Australia, a long-standing rivalry exists between Sydney and Melbourne – not least over which city brews the better cup of joe.
Melbourne has traditionally been regarded as the country's coffee capital — with a coffee history that dates back to the post-World War II era, when Italian immigrants brought their espresso machines and café traditions to the city.
In recent years, Sydney's coffee scene has punched above its weight, bruising the pride of Melbourne fans. The Harbor City overtook Melbourne last year in a list of the top 10 best cities worldwide for coffee, published by American magazine Food & Wine. Sydney took home the number three spot, while Melbourne landed at number 10.
The magazine named Melbourne's Proud Mary a 'standout' café, which also ranked fourth on the world's 100 best coffee shop list.
That wasn't the only blow to Melbourne's coffee reputation. In 2023, Australian travel site Wotif.com awarded the title of 'best flat white' to The Cupping Room in the national capital of Canberra, despite calling Melbourne the 'unofficial coffee capital of the world.'
If there's one thing the lists can agree on, it's that Australia wins.
'I think our win is a win for the country. Australian coffee is, I think, the best in the world and so it doesn't come down to Sydney and Melbourne,' said Leslie of Toby's Estate. 'We want to be strong as a country, and that helps everyone.'

NBA approves sale of Boston Celtics for a record $6.1 billion

BOSTON — The NBA on Wednesday unanimously approved the sale of the Boston Celtics to a group led by private equity mogul Bill Chisholm, a deal that values the franchise at more than $6.1 billion — the largest ever for an American professional sports team. The league said the transaction is expected to close shortly. When it does, Chisholm will take ownership of at least 51% of the team, with full control coming by 2028 at a price that could bring the total value to $7.3 billion. The previous record for a U.S. sports franchise was the $6.05 billion paid for the NFL's Washington Commanders in 2023. The record price for an NBA team was the $4 billion mortgage firm owner Mat Ishbia paid for the Phoenix Suns in 2023. A Massachusetts native and graduate of Dartmouth College and Penn's Wharton School of business, Chisholm is the managing partner of California-based Symphony Technology Group. The new ownership group also includes Boston businessmen Rob Hale, who is a current Celtics shareholder, and Bruce Beal Jr. Wyc Grousbeck led the ownership group that bought the team in 2002 for $360 million and presided over NBA championships in 2008 and '24. The franchise's 18 NBA titles is a record. Chisholm outbid at least two other groups, one led by previous Celtics minority partner Steve Pagliuca. Pagliuca has since announced plans to but the WNBA's Connecticut Sun for $325 million and move them to Boston, but the women's league has balked at the deal.

Evolve Bank names CEO with regulatory expertise

This story was originally published on Banking Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Banking Dive newsletter. Embattled lender Evolve Bank & Trust has named Bob Hartheimer CEO, effective immediately, following former CEO Scott Stafford's retirement earlier this year Hartheimer joins Evolve from financial regulatory consulting firm Klaros Group. He previously co-founded and served as chief regulatory and compliance officer at Jasper, a credit card originator; and served as a bank and fintech regulatory consultant on his own and at Promontory Financial Group from 2002 until 2008. Earlier in his career, he created and ran the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.'s Division of Resolutions, where he led a small team overseeing the sale of more than 200 banks with approximately $50 billion in assets and 10 large failing banks with $39 billion in assets, according to his LinkedIn profile. Former Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Sarah Bloom Raskin, who spent five years as Hartheimer's colleague at Promontory, said she expects Evolve to 'see improvement under his tenure' given his experience turning around and selling failing banks. 'Bob was selected for his unmatched corporate experience in strategically navigating challenges at financial institutions and enabling banks to move past their regulatory challenges,' Evolve board Chairman Steve Valentine said in a prepared statement. 'He has the full backing of the Board to take decisive action, restore thoughtful innovation, and lead Evolve into a future defined by transparency and sustainable growth. This is a structural change, demonstrating our continued commitment to doing the hard work to earn back the trust of our customers, employees, regulators, and investors,' Valentine said. Evolve has had a rocky couple of years. After it gained prominence as a fintech-friendly bank, several fintechs it partnered with – most notably Yotta, but also Juno and Casper – became unable to connect users to funds deposited in Evolve and a small handful of other banks. Synapse, the middleware firm sitting between Evolve and the fintechs, had filed for bankruptcy. Millions in user funds were unaccounted for. Many users remain unable to access their funds more than a year later. Two months after Synapse filed for bankruptcy in April 2024, the Federal Reserve hit Evolve with an enforcement action related to its third-party partnerships, which Hartheimer said it's still working to address. Last week, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said it was preparing to file an adversary proceeding complaint against Synapse, alleging unfair acts or practices and failure to maintain adequate records of consumer funds. 'When you lose trust like [Evolve did], your reputation is damaged, and it's hard to build a good reputation. You need somebody who actually has the competence and the expertise,' Bloom Raskin said. 'It's not a guarantee at all. It's hard work, but I can't think of anybody better to do it, frankly, than Bob Hartheimer. His background is quite suitable for what he has in front of him here.' Hartheimer said Wednesday that he 'believes' in Evolve's potential and aims to grow Evolve 'into something stronger and more resilient.' Since he began working with Evolve as a consultant last year, Hartheimer said his focus has been to build trust with regulators, and to address what needs to be repaired per the consent order. Earlier in his career as a regulatory consultant, he shared with executives at struggling banks that 'regulation 101 is trust – if an examiner asks you for something, you give it to him.' 'What I learned is that those banks [in which] the CEO, CFO, [or] head of risk understood the issues and fixed them, did really well,' Hartheimer said. One example was PNC, he shared, which faced a flurry of regulatory scrutiny in 2002. Today, PNC – which has been leaning into the 'boring' nature of banking following industry turbulence last year – is 'a phenomenal bank,' he said. 'The examiners pushing banks in a direction they need to go can have great results,' he said. 'I think that's what's going to happen here. I think we're going to come out of this rebuild of our open banking business with a very strong business, and that's part of the reason I want to be here.' President and Chief Financial Officer Mark Mosteller, President of Open Banking Division Hank Word and General Counsel and Corporate Secretary Joelle Weltzin will report to Hartheimer, according to a press release.
