World Junior Squash C'ships: Anahat Singh ends 15-year-long medal wait for India
The 17-year-old, who was seeded second in the women's singles draw, suffered a loss to Egypt's Nadien Elhammamy 3-0 (11-6, 14-12, 12-10) in the semi-finals at the Black Ball Sporting Club, as per Olympics.com.
Earlier in the quarterfinals, Anahat beat Egypt's Malika Elkaraksy 3-0 (11-6, 13-11, 11-5) to seal herself a bronze medal.
"I had lost in the quarters for three years in a row, and I'm really glad I was able to reach the semi-finals this time," Anahat Singh said after her quarterfinal win as quoted by Olympics.com.
Anahat was the only Indian out of eight semifinalists. 54th in the world rankings and the reigning U19 Asian girls' champion, was the only seeded Indian in the women's draw.
She had also secured the senior Asian titles in the women's and mixed doubles earlier this year and also made her World Championship debut in Chicago. She has also won plenty of PSA Challenger titles since her two-team bronze medals in the Asian Games Hangzhou back in 2022.
Anahat is now the first Indian to win a medal at the World Junior Championships since Dipika Pallikal secured a bronze in 2010.
However, no Indian has won a gold medal at the event, with Joshna Chinappa (silver in 2005), denied a gold medal 20 years ago.
A total of 234 players are participating in the ongoing championships, which feature individual events until July 26 and team events until August 1.

Gill breaks Gavaskar's record for most runs by Indian skipper during a Test series
London : Batter Shubman Gill surpassed legendary compatriot Sunil Gavaskar for most runs by an Indian captain in a Test series. Gill accomplished this milestone during his side's fifth Test against England at The Oval in London. At the end of the first session, Gill was unbeaten at 15 in 23 balls, with three fours. So far in the series, Gill has scored 737 runs in nine innings at an average of 92.12, with four centuries in nine innings and his best score of 269. He is the highest run-getter in the series. In 1978-79, Gavaskar had scored 732 runs during a home series against the West Indies, during six Tests and nine innings at an average of 91.50, with four centuries and a fifty. His best score was 205. He is also currently just 38 more runs from becoming the Indian with the most runs in a bilateral Test series, a record which Gavaskar holds for most runs by an Indian during a bilateral series, with 774 runs in four Tests against the West Indies away from home in 1971 series, at an average of 154.80, with four centuries and three fifties and a best score of 220. WCL confirms India Champions, Pakistan Champions semi-final match called off: Pakistan advances to final
Birmingham: Indian Champions have pulled out of their World Championship of Legends (WCL) semifinal clash against Pakistan Champions, due to tense political relations between both nations, as a result, Pakistan Champions have advanced to the final of WCL, according to a statement from WCL. This ends India's journey in the six-team tournament at fourth place, with a win, a no-result and three losses. The semifinal was originally scheduled for Thursday, but now, the Pakistan Champions will advance to the finals, facing off against either the Australia Champions or the South Africa Champions, who are playing the second semifinal. "At WCL, we have always believed in the power of sport to inspire and bring about positive change in the world. However, public sentiment must always be respected --after all, everything we do is for our audience. We respect the India Champions' decision to withdraw from the semi-finals, and we equally respect the Pakistan Champions' readiness to compete.
