Sporticast 461: Golden State Is the WNBA's Most Valuable Team

Yahoo27-06-2025
On the latest Sporticast episode, hosts Scott Soshnick and Kurt Badenhausen break down our recently published 2025 WNBA Valuations.
The Golden State Valkyries debuted at the top of the rankings with a worth $500 million—or 10 times what the franchise paid in expansion fees in October 2023. Golden State benefits from its affiliation with the NBA's Warriors and San Francisco's Chase Center, but the new team has also quickly built a business all its own, buoyed by new season ticket holders (and high-paying floor seat guests).

With franchises rising, expansion fees are too. Cleveland could pay $250 million to join the league starting in the 2028 season. Scott and Kurt also discuss what the latest team valuations mean for ongoing collective bargaining discussions with players. In particular, Scott reflects on the comparison to NBA battles of the '90s—and one specific star who could be playing a Michael Jordanesque role for the women today. NBA affiliation has benefited W teams amid recent growth, giving franchises more ability to harness a boom in interest. New media partners in the coming years will further establish the league's position in the American sports firmament. The popularity of college basketball has contributed to the WNBA's success as well. Is it only a matter of time before GSV's new position atop the league's financial charts is challenged?
The hosts also touch on an NHL head coach taking a minority stake in hockey equipment company CCM, plus a big day for the Sporticast's Focus Group of One.

Report: What left scout 'shocked' about Jayson Tatum's Achilles rehab

Jayson Tatum is progressing well in his rehab from a torn Achilles. So well, in fact, that he impressed a scout who was in attendance at Chris Paul's CP3 Elite Camp in Las Vegas where the Boston Celtics star was seen. 'He was moving really well,' the scout told Heavy's Steve Bulpett in a phone conversation. 'There might have been a slight limp or something, but the surprising thing to me is that he didn't have a boot for any of it. I'm no doctor, but I've seen guys coming back from Achilles' tears, and he looked way ahead. I was kind of shocked to see how well he was moving.' Tatum suffered a ruptured Achilles in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Knicks in May. He had surgery shortly after, and was recently rehabbing in a pool. In July, president of basketball operations Brad Stevens provided an update on Tatum's progress. 'He's a competitor,' Stevens said. 'He's going to be competitive in everything he does, including his rehab. So I'm really encouraged. I've been basically seeing him every day in Boston over the last 50 days or whatever. Usually he goes away at the end of the season and comes back, but he's just stayed there and has been doing his rehab. It's been fun to spend time with him every day and just try to catch up and see how he's doing as we watch him make the strides he needs to make.' While there's no timeline for Tatum's return, it's likely he will miss the entire 2025-26 season. The recovery is lengthy and the Celtics will look like a different team by the time he returns. Caitlin Clark's Response To Sophie Cunningham's Swimsuit Photo Is Going Viral

Caitlin Clark's Response To Sophie Cunningham's Swimsuit Photo Is Going Viral originally appeared on The Spun. Before the Indiana Fever suffered a 100-91 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Tuesday night, Caitlin Clark's teammates decided to soak up the sun. Leading up to the Fever-Sparks game, Fever guard Sophie Cunningham shared a video of her and Lexie Hull tanning by a pool. Her TikTok post included this caption: "We are off to our game tonight. Convince us there's a swimsuit brand that wants to partner with two Indiana Fever mermaids." Cunningham and Hull combined for 8 points, 3 assists and 3 rebounds during Tuesday's loss. That's not the type of production Indiana expects from these sharpshooting guards, that's for sure. Although she replied before the Fever fell short to the Sparks on Tuesday, Clark called out her teammates for tanning prior to tipoff. "Swimsuit brands plz comment 'focus on basketball,'" Clark wrote in response to Cunningham's TikTok post. This comment from Clark received over 19,700 likes in less than 24 hours. Cunningham didn't just go viral Tuesday night because of her TikTok post. She was nearly struck by a sex toy at Arena. This happened as she was standing by the free throw line. "I was thinking about like, if someone threw that thing and like, first of all, the bounce that that thing had, if that smacks someone in the face, you know that's gonna be plastered everywhere," Cunningham previously said on her podcast. Last week, the WNBA called out its fans for throwing objects onto the court. Another comment may have to be released after the Fever-Sparks incident. "The safety and well-being of everyone in our arenas is a top priority for our league," the WNBA said in a statement. "Objects of any kind thrown onto the court or in the seating area can pose a safety risk for players, game officials, and fans. In line with WNBA Arena Security Standards, any fan who intentionally throws an object onto the court will be immediately ejected and face a minimum one-year ban in addition to being subject to arrest and prosecution by local authorities." Cunningham and the Fever will be back in action Thursday night against the Phoenix Mercury. With 15 games left in the regular season, beginning Friday night against the Wings in Dallas, the Liberty are currently in second place as the trade deadline cutoff approaches on Thursday at 3 p.m. Carrying a 19-10 record to the Lone Star State and looking poised to make another run, New York is not expected to make another move after adding two players — Emma Meesseman and Steph Talbot — over the past couple of weeks to bring their roster to a full 12. Thursday is expected to be a busier deadline day than normal for the WNBA. Amid anticipation of a new collective bargaining agreement, many players, including some veterans, signed one-year deals ahead of the 2025 season. Liberty general manager Jonathan Kolb is not expected to make any other moves before Thursday's WNBA trade deadline. Michelle Farsi / New York Post These players are now able to negotiate more lucrative deals under the expectation that salaries will increase as part of the new CBA. The current CBA is set to expire on Oct. 31, 2025, and the new one is projected to take effect in 2026. Two of the top three contenders in the Western Conference, the Lynx and the Storm, made trades this past week to improve their rosters. The Sun's Marina Mabrey, who reportedly asked for a trade in the offseason, is another strong candidate to be on the move. As for the Wings' Arike Ogunbowale, who is on an expiring contract, Winsidr's Melissa Triebwasser reported that Dallas will not move the 5-foot-8 guard prior to Thursday's deadline.
