Grim new details of childcare worker's alleged abuse emerge after months of secrecy - and some of it is just too vile to publish

Daily Mail6 days ago
Some of the allegations against a childcare worker accused of indecently filming pre-pubescent boys are too disturbing to publish in detail.
Court papers reveal David William James is alleged to have photographed and filmed boys as young as five in varying states of undress while using a urinal.
Other charges relate to the private school graduate from Artarmon on Sydney 's north shore performing a sex act and shooting video while standing behind a child.
James attended Knox Grammar at Wahroonga, where he excelled at music, until 2017 and worked part-time at almost 60 child care facilities between March 2018 and September 2024.
The 26-year-old's identity had been kept secret for nine months until a suppression order was lifted in Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday.
James is charged with nine counts of aggravated use of a child to make child abuse material, four counts of possessing abuse data or material and one of using a child to make abuse material.
He was employed for at least one shift at 58 out-of-school-hours (OOSH) centres but investigators have allegedly only found evidence of crimes committed against children at six of the places he worked.
Those centres were: OSHClub at Barker College, St Ives OSHC Centre - Kidzone, Pyrmont OSHC, Willoughby Kids House, and Helping Hands services at St Ives Park Public School and Lane Cove West.
The charges relate to acts allegedly committed on the North Shore at Artarmon, Waitara, Willoughby, St Ives and Lane Cove West, as well as Moore Park in the eastern suburbs.
OOSH care can include undertaking excursions and other activities, which would explain some of the alleged offences having been committed outside the centres.
James worked in 'heavily supervised' assistant roles at Knox Grammar between March 2018 and July 2020 and at the school's OSHClub in May 2024.
A Knox spokesperson said the AFP had confirmed finding no connection between the charges he is now facing and where he went to school.
'We have been instructed multiple times by the Australian Federal Police that Knox is not part of their investigation,' the spokesperson said.
James was initially charged last September with refusing to grant Australian Federal Police access to his phone and was arrested again a month later when he was hit with more serious charges.
A non-publication order suppressing any detail about the original alleged offence has also now expired.
Court papers seen by the Daily Mail state James refused to provide the passcodes to his iPhone and laptop in defiance of a warrant on September 26 at Artarmon.
Police said James was accredited to work with children but that certification had since been removed.
James did not appear in person or via audio-video link on Thursday when Deputy Chief Magistrate Michael Antrum lifted a non-publication order on his name.
AFP acting Assistant Commissioner Brett James said an investigation into James began after the detection of child abuse material on the dark web in June 2024.
'Today, court orders were lifted, so we can now talk about this investigation,' acting Assistant Commissioner James said on Thursday.
'The non-publication order issued by the court was to allow our investigators the time to carefully work through all the available evidence to establish a full picture of the alleged offending.'
Acting Assistant Commissioner James said police had examined 142,000 files on the alleged paedophile's devices which amounted to 18.9GB of material.
James was a probationary police constable between December 2021 and September 2022.
He failed to finish his probation period and resigned from the NSW Police Force in May 2023 after a stint working in a civilian capacity.
NSW Police admitted on Thursday that James was rejected by the force because he had failed to disclose his part-time childcare employment.
'During his employment, the man failed to seek the required approval to engage in secondary employment, and as such, police were unaware of his concurrent role in the childcare sector,' a police spokesperson said.
'We acknowledge the seriousness of the allegations and condemn any behaviour that places our community's most vulnerable members at risk.'
It was revealed last month, before James's name could be published, that 1,200 letters had been sent to parents and carers who may have crossed paths with him.
The letters were sent as part of process led by NSW Police and the AFP under the Joint Child Protection Response Program.
Investigators asked parents and carers who received the letter to read it carefully, including instructions for contacting a hotline with any relevant concerns.
Police were working with NSW Health, NSW Department of Communities and Justice, NSW Department of Education and Training and the Office of the Children's Guardian.
In a joint statement released on June 19, the AFP and NSW Police said James' alleged offending involved a 'very small number of children'.
James has been refused bail since October and is next due to face court on August 21.

Trump says National Guard coming to DC ‘very quickly' after teens beat ‘handsome' ex-DOGE staffer known as ‘Big Balls'

President Donald Trump said he could call in the National Guard to Washington, D.C. to help tackle crime following an alleged attack on a former Department of Government Efficiency staffer nicknamed 'Big Balls.' Trump has railed against what he called the capital's 'out of control' crime rate this week and said he would call Edward Coristine, the 19-year-old hired by Elon Musk, to check in on him after he was beaten by a group of teenagers. 'We just almost lost a young man…a beautiful, handsome guy, that got the hell knocked out of him the night before last,' Trump said at an Oval Office event Wednesday. 'I'm gonna call him now, wanted to give him a little recovery time…he went through a bad situation to put it mildly, and there's too much of it, we're going to do something about it.' Trump also repeated his threats to take the responsibility of law enforcement in D.C. away from the city and into the hands of the central government. 'The rate of crime, the rate of muggings, killings and everything else, we're not gonna let it…And that includes bringing in the National Guard, maybe very quickly too,' Trump added. After violent protests erupted in Los Angeles in June, Trump called in thousands of National Guard soldiers over the objections of state and local officials. This week Trump also floated the possibility of deploying the military when the city hosts the 2028 Olympic Games. Despite the president's threats to deploy the military in D.C., violent crime in the nation's capital dropped by 35 percent in 2024, police figures show. The president did not mention Coristine by name but the former DOGE worker, who is now working in the Social Security Administration, was identified in a Metropolitan Police Department report about the attack. Trump shared a photo of Coristine Tuesday evening on Truth Social, where he appeared bloodied and beaten following the attack. Coristine was with an unnamed woman in downtown D.C. at 3 a.m. Sunday when a group of juveniles approached their car, according to the police report of the incident. The report explains that the suspects approached the victims standing next to the vehicle parked on the 1400 block of Swann Street and demanded that they hand it over before assaulting one of the victims. During the attack, an MPD cruiser pulled up, prompting the attackers to flee. Two of the suspects were apprehended by the on-scene officers. At the same time, one of the victims [Coristine] was treated by emergency services personnel for injuries sustained during the assault. The pair arrested was two 15-year-olds, a male and a female, from nearby Hyattsville, Maryland. They were subsequently charged with unarmed carjacking. Coristine's iPhone 16, worth $1,000, was reportedly stolen during the incident. Marko Elez, a software engineer who also worked at DOGE, before he resigned over a racist social media post, said he took the photo of his friend following the attack. 'My friend Big Balls is a hero. I took this photo after Edward protected a young woman from an attempted carjacking by eight thugs near Dupont Circle,' Elez wrote on X. 'Violence like this in the heart of D.C. is completely unacceptable.' Musk also posted about the incident on X but likewise did not name Coristine. 'A few days ago, a gang of about a dozen young men tried to assault a woman in her car at night in D.C.,' Musk said Tuesday. 'A Doge team member saw what was happening, ran to defend her and was severely beaten to the point of concussion, but he saved her. It is time to federalize D.C.' Coristine claimed to have caught the eye of the world's richest man by simply changing his name on LinkedIn to 'Big Balls.' He left his role with DOGE shortly after Musk left the government in June and quickly landed a new role with the Social Security Administration.

Dave Franco breaks silence on Luigi Mangione biopic rumors after fans begged for star to play alleged assassin

Dave Franco has finally revealed whether he would play alleged CEO killer Luigi Mangione onscreen - after fans went wild over their resemblance to one another. Mangione is accused of murdering United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, a 50-year-old father-of-two, outside a Manhattan hotel while he was attending a work conference on December 4, 2024. He has pleaded not guilty to both state and federal charges in connection with the December murder. When the 'anti-capitalist' Ivy League student was first detained by police last year, fans began pointing out that he and Franco, 40, were 'practically twins' - and speculated prolific television writer Ryan Murphy would create a series based on him. Appearing on Watch What Happens Live! on Tuesday, Franco said of the possibility of portraying Mangione: 'Oh, how do I answer this?' 'No one has approached me about it yet, I'll say that. This is something that more people in my life reached out about this exact thing than anything else that has ever happened. Dave Franco has finally revealed whether he would play alleged CEO killer Luigi Mangione (R) onscreen - after fans went wild over their resemblance to one another Thompson's murder was captured on a chilling video 'Let's just say I'm open if the right people… and let's just leave it at that.' Amid the manhunt for the shooter, fans had taken to X to quip that Franco should be in line to play him. One said: 'Dave Franco pick up the phone.' Another posted: 'Dave Franco has a role waiting for him once this inevitably becomes a movie.' A third wrote: 'Ryan Murphy is drafting an email to Dave Franco as we speak.' 'Dave Franco's agent has been on the phone all morning,' a fourth added. Mangione was recently granted a major perk behind bars as he awaits trial. He has been given access to a laptop to use in jail in preparation of the murder trial. The laptop will be 'prepared by the government' and handed over to Mangione seven days a week, for use between 8am and 4pm, the NY Post reported. When the 'anti-capitalist' Ivy League student was detained by police days later - fans began pointing out that he and Franco, 40, were 'practically twins' - Mangione pictured in February 2025 Appearing on Watch What Happens Live! on Tuesday, Franco said of the possibility of portraying Mangione: ' Oh, how do I answer this?' 'Let's just say I'm open if the right people… and let's just leave it at that' Mangione was taken into custody after a McDonald's employee in Altoona spotted him in December U.S. District Judge Margaret M. Garnett signed an order on Monday demanding the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn begin preparations to secure the laptop. Mangione's attorneys, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, Marc Agnifilo and Jacob Kaplan, told the judge the letter would allow Mangione to 'adequately prepare for trial and assist in his own defense.' But the laptop will be disabled from accessing the internet or any wireless networks, Mangione's attorneys revealed. It will be set up with case-related documents and videos provided to Mangione's defense by the government. A red diary found in Mangione's possession when he was arrested at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania, at the end of a five-day manhunt, have offered insight into his alleged motive. The diary documented Mangione's musings on what Unabomber Ted Kaczynski got wrong during his reign of terror between 1978 and 1995, according to court filings. In one entry from August 15, 2024, Mangione writes that he is 'confident' about his plan - four months before the shooting took place - and that he believes it to be 'right/justified.' 'I finally feel confident about what I will do. The details are coming together. And I don't feel any doubt about whether it's right/justified,' his scrawling writing reads. 'I'm glad-in a way-that I've procrastinated bc [sic] it allowed me to learn more about UHC [UnitedHealthcare].' 'The target is insurance. It checks every box.' The execution of Thompson in the street was captured on chilling surveillance footage In another diary entry dated two months later on October 10 2024, Mangione allegedly marks a countdown to the day of the attack: '1.5 months.' In the rambling diary entry, Mangione goes on to refer to those in the healthcare industry as 'parasites' and 'mafioso' and describes UnitedHealthcare's December conference as a 'true windfall' that 'embodies everything wrong with our health system.' If Mangione is convicted, federal prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty.

Aussie cop exposes the red flag behaviours paedophiles use to groom kids - and the two things every parent needs to know

A former child abuse detective has exposed two subtle but sinister tactics predators use to get close to children, warning that it's not just the kids being groomed - it's the adults too. Kristi McVee, who spent a decade as a senior detective with the Western Australia Police Force specialising in child abuse, says parents are often unknowingly the first target in a predator's plan. Now the founder of Child Abuse Prevention and Education Australia (CAPE), Ms McVee is on a mission to educate parents on the real-world grooming tactics she witnessed during years of harrowing frontline work. 'There are two things child sex offenders do to groom adults so they can get close to kids,' she told viewers in a video last month. 'Number one, they want you to like them. Number two, they need you to trust them.' She explained that offenders often embed themselves into a family's life, posing as friends, mentors or even community helpers, to gain the trust they need to be left alone with a child. 'If they're not someone who is in your family already, like a parent or a grandparent, they're going to be someone introduced to your family. 'They're going to need you to trust them.' Ms McVee warned that there's no single blueprint for how predators earn trust, but there are common threads. 'How this looks depends on the person, but they're very friendly, very helpful, offering opinions, offering advice, wanting to help coach or wanting to help support, it's dependent on the child and the relationship,' she said. 'If it's a coach, for instance: 'Your child's very special, they need extra support.' 'If it's a friend who wants to get closer to your children: 'Let me take them for the weekend so that you can have a night off.' It really depends. 'They want you to like them and they want you to trust them so they can get your children alone with them.' Ms McVee also shared some of the common red flags that parents often miss. She said predators may try to normalise inappropriate physical contact, such as giving excessive hugs, kisses, or insisting on children sitting on their lap. They may touch the child in ways that aren't necessary, including around areas close to their private parts, she said. They often seek out alone time with children and go out of their way to arrange situations where other adults aren't present, such as sleepovers, private tutoring, or 'special' playdates. In many cases, the adult will keep secrets with the child and ask them not to tell their parents, using phrases like 'this is our little secret' or 'I'll get in trouble if you tell.' They may also shower the child with special treats, extravagant gifts, or foods their parents have said no to, as a way of building loyalty and complicity. Another tactic involves treating the child as if they're more mature than they are, including exposing them to adult content. Predators may create opportunities for nudity or semi-nudity, for instance by offering to bathe or change the child, and showing little regard for their privacy. In some cases, they'll deliberately undermine the parents, dismissing their rules, going behind their back, or brushing off the importance of teaching body safety and abuse prevention. Ms McVee said the risk is greater than many parents realise, warning that one in three girls and one in five boys will be sexually abused before the age of 18. Disturbingly, more than 90 per cent of the time, the offender is someone the child knows. Her own awareness of the scale of the problem began in her first week as a police officer. She said she was shocked by how widespread abuse was, and how little understanding the public had of how it really happens. Through her organisation, CAPE, she now works to bridge that gap by sharing her insights through blogs, educational resources and social media. She explained that grooming is rarely a random act, instead, it follows a pattern. Most predators go through five stages: identifying a victim, building a connection, isolating the child, initiating abuse, and then maintaining control. Her key advice to parents is to teach their children the difference between feeling safe and unsafe, because children, especially very young ones, don't always recognise when something is wrong. 'Sometimes children don't understand what it means to feel unsafe, so they don't understand when something inappropriate is happening,' she said. 'When I talk with kids as young as two or three, I'll say, 'When I feel unsafe I get butterflies in my tummy, my hands feel sweaty and my voice is shaky.' That helps kids to identify if they're feeling unsafe.' She also urged parents to be wary of adults who appear too eager to spend time with their children. 'Look out for those people who are paying way too much attention to kids,' she said. 'No one should want to spend more time with your child than you want to spend with your child. Even as parents, we don't always want to be around our kids, they're annoying at times. There is not one adult that should want to be around your child more than you.'
