‘Rafael Nadal spoke to me for hours and hours after heartache suffered at Wimbledon'

Daily Mirror3 days ago
Alexander Zverev faced mental health struggles after suffering an upset in the opening round at Wimbledon, after which he sought the help and support of tennis icon Rafael Nadal
Alexander Zverev has revealed he spent "hours and hours" talking to Rafael Nadal following his nightmare defeat at Wimbledon. The German tennis star, ranked third in the world, was expected to breeze past world No. 72 Arthur Rinderknech when they faced off in the first round at SW19 in late June.

But Zverev was left stunned in a shocking five-set defeat. Despite being in top form on grass until that match, the 28-year-old suffered a 7-6(3) 6-7 6-3 6-7 6-4 loss.

Zverev has since spoken about the mental toll the loss took on him, leading to the worst period of his career and prompting him to take a four-week hiatus from competitive tennis.

He made his comeback at the Toronto Open, reaching the semi-finals before losing to Karen Khachanov on Wednesday.
It was only after a training camp with Toni Nadal, the uncle and former coach of 22-time Grand Slam champion Nadal, that he managed to get back on the right track.
Zverev has now opened up about the 10 days he spent in Mallorca, where he had lengthy discussions with the pair while picking their brains, sometimes into the early hours of the morning.
Zverev said at his press conference: 'It was amazing. I spent about 10 days there, worked really hard and enjoyed it as well. I think Toni enjoyed it as well. I'm trying to convince him to do more weeks with me; we'll see how it goes, but he's a very busy man.'
The tennis star opened up on how he ended up at Nadal's renowned academy centre, saying: 'Uncle Toni contacted me after Wimbledon. I was very thankful for that.

"We spoke on the phone for about an hour and a half, exchanged some messages, and then I decided to go to Mallorca to see him.
'He's a great coach, no doubt, but he's also someone who can give you a lot of confidence because when he speaks – and when Rafa speaks – you listen. They spent many hours talking to me and gave me a great perspective.'
He continued: 'Rafa gave me a great perspective on what it's really like to play against me because he saw me as a player and now has seen me as a spectator. It was very helpful.
'Again, we spent hours and hours talking, sometimes until after midnight, at dinners and things like that. So it was great to be there.'
Nadal and Zverev are former rivals, with the Spaniard boasting a 7-4 record over the German in head-to-heads before his retirement. Despite that respectable record, Zeverev has still not won a Grand Slam.
He has reached three finals, with his latest attempt ending in defeat to Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open earlier this year.

Rebel's Romance and Loughnane rock in Germany

A firm favourite of trainer Charlie Appleby, the seven-year-old began his Group One haul in this very race back in 2022 and three years on he was back in the German capital to strike for the eighth time at the highest level. Keen to keep things simple Rebel's Romance was up with the pace throughout the early stages, keeping close tabs on Andre Fabre's Junko and when straightening for home he showed his class to bravely hold off the French challenger. It was in fact a fourth Group One success on German soil for the well-travelled dual Breeders' Cup Turf hero who could return to Del Mar for another crack at the season-ending showpiece, with Coral making him the 5-1 co second-favourite for a third Stateside victory. Appleby said: 'It's great for Billy, but more importantly great for the horse who keeps sparkling on all continents. 'To have him carry on at the top level is fantastic for Sheikh Mohammed and I see this as a pre-cursor for the Canadian International at Woodbine and then the Breeders' Cup.' Loughnane has ridden eight winners from 12 rides for Appleby this season and it is fitting his first success at the top table comes in Germany, having notched his first Group-race triumph at Cologne in April last year. It caps a memorable weekend for his teenage pilot who also won the Sweet Solera Stakes in the royal blue of Appleby and Godolphin aboard Dance To The Music at Newmarket on Saturday. Loughnane told Wettstar: 'This is a feeling I can't describe, it's a feeling of ecstasy, what a horse and I'm very lucky to be riding in these colours and riding a horse like this. 'He's a star of a horse and has been going for a good few seasons now. Big thanks go to William Buick and I spoke to him last night and he told me exactly what to do. He's a superstar.'

‘Clubs won't expect it' – Luke Littler gives his prediction for Man Utd's season

United are keen for the recently-crowned World Matchplay champion to visit Old Trafford to show off his latest trophy success. RED DEVILS REVIVAL 'Clubs won't expect it' – Luke Littler gives his prediction for Man Utd's season LUKE LITTLER is 'excited' about Manchester United's prospects this year – and reckons 'most clubs' will be surprised by their revival under boss Ruben Amorim. United embarrassingly finished 15th in last season's Premier League, losing 18 league matches as morale hit rock bottom. It was their worst campaign since they were relegated from the top flight in 1974 and Portuguese chief Amorim, 40, is under pressure to deliver this term. It has not been easy being a fan of the club and Littler, one of their most high-profile supporters, had to put up with a lot of abuse, especially on social media, from those from rival teams. Yet performances in the recent Summer Series in the US have given him cause for great optimism. Striker Sesko, 22, has arrived from RB Leipzig and is an exciting young talent who could take the Prem by storm and perhaps solve their scoring issues. Littler, 18, said: 'I'm very excited. I think we are underdogs. 'Obviously from last season, I don't think anything worse can happen – unless we finish 16th. Advertisement 'But yeah, I think it is going to be a very interesting season. Most clubs won't expect it but I'm expecting top five.' It is going to be a very interesting season. Most clubs won't expect it but I'm expecting top five. Luke Littler on Manchester United's new Premier League campaign Following his latest triumph, secured at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, club insiders would welcome him doing the same again with this pot of silverware. Though Littler was not even born when United completed the historic Treble in 1999, they see the similarities with his latest achievement. 6 Luke Littler showed off the Sid Waddell Trophy at Old Trafford in January 2025 Credit: Getty Advertisement 6 Ruben Amorim will be determined to avoid a repeat of last year's terrible Premier League campaign Credit: Getty No official conversation has been had yet between the two parties but Littler has close links to the management. Roberto De Zerbi fires dig at Unai Emery after Marseille vs Aston Villa boils over

Aston Villa and Marseille played out an ill-tempered friendly clash in France and Roberto De Zerbi wasn't too impressed with Unai Emery's approach to the game amid the feisty atmosphere Roberto De Zerbi told Unai Emery there is no such thing as 'friendly matches' after clashing with the Aston Villa coach in a heated meeting in southern France. Villa lost 3-1 to Marseille at the Stade Velodrome after former Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, now 36, came off the bench to score two late goals. ‌ But the bad-tempered clash saw Tyrone Mings grab first-half goalscorer Mason Greenwood by the collar and rip his shirt after the former Manchester United tripped Amadou Onana. The striker kicked out at the Belgian midfielder after evading a number of challenges. ‌ Onana was far from impressed and berated Greenwood, who then laughed in his face. Villa's star then gestured towards his face before Mings stormed in followed by a number of players from each side. Greenwood was taken off the field by De Zerbi in the aftermath. ‌ Emery was furious with Marseille's rough tactics a week before the start of the Premier League season. But former Brighton boss De Zerbi was unimpressed with the Spaniard's reaction. "He complained to my players. I prefer that he takes care of his players, and I take care of mine," De Zerbi said. "The match was heated, it's good that it's like that, people paid to come to the Vélodrome, when they could have gone to the beach we have to respect them. We should have been more aggressive from the start. "We are a professional team, like Aston Villa, like Sevilla, there are never really any friendly matches or training sessions. What's important is not to get caught out in Rennes on Friday (Marseille's opening Ligue 1 fixture). "We have to go there with the same attitude, not act without commitment. Tomorrow (Sunday) morning, we train, no time to have fun or make ourselves look pretty." Aston Villa move on from France to Spain to take on Villarreal at the Estadi de la Ceramica. The trip marks a return to the Yellow Submarine for Emery after a two-year spell at the club where he won the Europa Leagueand reached the Champions League semi-finals. ‌ It will be the Spaniard's final opportunity to prepare the Villans for their Premier League opener against Newcastle United on Saturday. The Midlands side will hope to get their campaign off to a quick start against a rival for European qualification.
