Jail for Singapore woman who opened bank accounts that received over US$500mil, including scam proceeds

The Star14-07-2025
SINGAPORE: A woman who incorporated a wholesale trading firm before its bank accounts received more than US$500 million (S$640.7 million), including scam proceeds, was sentenced to one year and six months' jail on Monday (July 14).
Singaporean Zin Nwe Nyunt, 58, had admitted that she did not know where the money came from.
In earlier proceedings, the court heard that in August 2021, police received information that an Australian investment scam victim had transferred US$1.8 million to several bank accounts maintained by companies in Singapore.
Three of the companies later transferred more than $480,000 to a bank account belonging to a firm called Unione, which Zin Nwe Nyunt had incorporated.
In March, she pleaded guilty to two counts of working together with a male Myanmar national, who was her husband's childhood friend, to carry out a business of providing a payment service in Singapore without a licence.
She had earned 'commissions' totalling more than $170,000, while Nyan Win, the man she worked with, received over $110,000.
The latter, who is a 61-year-old Singapore permanent resident, had earlier pleaded guilty to similar charges and is expected to be sentenced on July 30.
It all started in 2019 when a Myanmar national known as Ko Phillip, who purportedly operated a commodities trading business, told Nyan Win that he was looking for someone to incorporate a company in Singapore to assist him in his business.
The company in Singapore would then open corporate bank accounts, which would be used to receive and transfer funds on Ko Phillip's instructions.
Under this arrangement, he offered Nyan Win a commission of 0.5 Myanmar kyat (0.03 Singapore cent) for every US$1 received.
Nyan Win was interested in this opportunity. However, he was uncertain whether he could set up a corporate bank account through Piyar International, a company that dealt with motor vehicles, where he was a director.
Without revealing details, Deputy Public Prosecutor Ryan Lim told the court in March this was because banks had previously closed Piyar's corporate bank accounts.
Nyan Win then approached Zin Nwe Nyunt's husband and told him about this potential business opportunity with Ko Phillip.
As the husband was holding a full-time job, he suggested that Zin Nwe Nyunt assist in the new firm's incorporation instead.
It was later agreed between Zin Nwe Nyunt and Nyan Win that the corporate bank accounts would be controlled by Nyan Win. Commissions would then be split between the pair.
Zin Nwe Nyunt incorporated Unione and, at different times, opened one corporate account each with three banks. She then handed over information, including the internet banking details, to Nyan Win.
DPP Lim had said that from 2020 to 2021, Nyan Win liaised with Ko Phillip to make arrangements for money to be received into Unione's corporate bank accounts.
Zin Nwe Nyunt and Nyan Win did not know where the funds came from.
However, the pair also did not perform any checks to ascertain the nature of the funds received or the legitimacy of Ko Phillip's claims that he was operating a 'commodities business'.
Between January and July 2020, Nyan Win used one of Unione's bank accounts to receive more than US$150 million before the money was transferred out.
On July 21, 2020, the bank closed the account due to many suspicious transactions.
Following the closure of this account, Zin Nwe Nyunt took instructions from Nyan Win and opened a corporate account with another bank.
Between July 2020 and April 2021, Nyan Win used this new account to receive more than US$250 million before the money was transferred out.
DPP Lim said that between Aug 18, 2020, and March 24, 2021, a third bank account was used to receive more than US$127 million and over US$119 million was transferred out.
On July 14, Zin Nwe Nyunt's bail was set at $20,000. She is expected to begin serving her sentence on Aug 15. - The Straits Times/ANN

Jho Low reportedly living in luxury in China under unofficial protection

KUALA LUMPUR: Fugitive financier Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, is reportedly living in luxury in China under unofficial protection, according to fresh claims by investigative journalists Bradley Hope and Tom Wright. Speaking in their podcast, Finding Jho Low, which aired on Friday, the authors of Billion Dollar Whale revealed that Low is allegedly residing in Shanghai's upscale Green Hills neighbourhood and operating under a forged Australian passport using the alias "Constantinos Achilles Veis." They claimed that former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had allegedly advised Low to flee the country as scrutiny of the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal intensified, prompting him to escape to China where he had familial ties in the Chiuchow region. "Despite being a fugitive, he is living comfortably, driving luxury cars and accompanied by Chinese security guards. It appears he is not under house arrest but enjoying an unrestricted life," Hope said in the podcast. Hope and Wright, who spent years tracking Low's global movements, also alleged that Malaysia lost as much as US$6 billion (RM28 billion) in Belt and Road Initiative-linked projects that were engineered with Low's involvement, mirroring the pattern of financial manipulation seen in the 1MDB scandal. Among the most revealing claims was that Low had allegedly cultivated ties with high-ranking Chinese political figures and intelligence officers, positioning himself as a "shadow broker" who influenced Malaysia's foreign policy tilt towards Beijing. The podcast also highlighted how Low allegedly played a role in corrupt infrastructure deals such as the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project, which involved bribes to Chinese officials, including former deputy public security minister Sun Lijun, who was later jailed for corruption. A turning point in the investigation came in 2019 when a photo of Low at Shanghai Disneyland surfaced. Analysts said the image helped identify his close-knit circle and added weight to claims that he is under unofficial protection by Chinese authorities. Hope and Wright suggested that Low has rebranded himself in China as a "dark arts coordinator," helping Chinese companies navigate complex regulatory environments, especially when dealing with the United States. "He is not just hiding. He is actively helping Chinese entities operate in hostile geopolitical terrain. That makes him valuable," Wright said. The journalists also claimed that Low had maintained an office at the Shanghai World Financial Centre, further suggesting he was actively engaged in financial or strategic work, rather than merely evading law enforcement. Much of the information shared in the podcast came from undisclosed documents and confidential sources, which the journalists said they could not reveal due to safety concerns. These revelations challenge earlier assumptions that Low was under house arrest or moving covertly from one location to another. Instead, they paint a picture of a man who remains influential and protected within a powerful foreign system. Law enforcement agencies, including those in Malaysia and the United States, may now have to recalibrate their approach in seeking Low's return as calls grow louder for accountability in the multibillion-dollar corruption scandal.

Glove sector plunges down to 59% amid weak demand, tariff fears

Glove makers under Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB)'s coverage have declined significantly in the first half of 2025 (1H2025), with share prices down between -47% to -59%. The sector was first weighed down by growing investor risk aversion towards export-oriented sectors in early-2025 in view of the potential unfavourable reciprocal tariffs to be imposed on Malaysia imports by US President Trump post his inauguration. Sentiment was further dampened by earnings disappointments from Hartalega and Kossan in Feb 2025, which missed both our and consensus estimates. This was accompanied by a weak forward guidance from Hartalega, which flagged the possibility of returning to losses in upcoming quarters and raised concerns over Chinese peers' expansion into Southeast Asia (SEA). 'Based on our checks, sales orders for generic medical examination rubber gloves remain subdued since Feb 2025, with the US replenishment cycle guidance continuing to be pushed back,' said HLIB. According to the glove makers, the softness was primarily attributed to US distributors still sitting on the front-loaded inventories, while ex-US markets are facing fierce competition from Chinese players. We believe that the muted US demand faced by Malaysian manufacturers may also be linked to transhipment activities by Chinese peers, who rerouted shipments through Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam, before exporting to the US. This is evidenced by the rising market share and imported customs values from these countries, even as total US customs values for imported medical and surgical rubber gloves during March-April 2025 remained comparable to the front-loading period in October-November 2024. For pricing, glove makers have indicated the average selling point (ASP) for generic medical examination rubber gloves will remain in a downtrend due to lower raw material prices and ongoing fierce competition domestically and regionally. Based on our channel checks, there will be about 5-8 bil pcs/annum coming online in Vietnam and c.5bn pcs/annum in Indonesia by end-2025. In addition, we estimated that Intco will add 10 bil pcs/annum from China itself in 2025. On a positive note, there remains potential for a gradual demand shift among US buyers from vinyl gloves to nitrile rubber gloves should the ongoing 90-day tariff negotiations between the US and China end unfavourably. This substitution effect, estimated at an additional 28-38 bil pcs/annum, could help absorb the incoming supply from Intco's expanded capacity, thereby supporting the path toward restoring supply-demand equilibrium by 2026, based on our view. —July 21, 2025 Main image: Reuters
